1 Learning Styles Presented by the Student Success Center
2 What is a Learning Style? Reflects our preferred manner of acquiring, using, and thinking about knowledge. Sensory learning styles: Visual Auditory Tactile/Kinesthetic
3 Key Facts You may have strengths in more than one area. There is no right way to learn. Starts at birth but will change over time. Work on improving less-preferred styles. Work cooperatively with others who have different styles.
4 Why is it important to know your learning style? If you don t know: How can anybody else? How can you learn? How can you help somebody else learn?
5 Visual Learning Style Learners with visual learning styles find it easier to see things in their mind s eye to visualize a task or concept than to be lectured about them. When you are assembling an item of furniture, do you refer to the pictures and diagrams included with the instructions?
6 Visual Learners Look and learn Use eyes constantly, i.e.: Maps Charts Graphs Diagrams Pictures Make very short out lines of notes. Use colored markers to highlight notes. Use colored 5x7 cards for notes. Use colors, diagrams, arrows, & symbols.
7 Auditory Learning Style Learners with auditory learning styles prefer listening to explanations rather than reading about them. They love class lectures and discussions, because they can easily take in the information that is being talked about. Are you able to remember the lyrics to a song after hearing it only one or two times?
8 Auditory Learners Talk to Yourself Plan a sentence you want to write by saying it out loud. Take lecture notes of main idea then fill in the blanks after lecture (immediately). Read lecture notes out loud. Recite everything pertaining to course work. Give yourself constant auditory stimulus. Use a tape recorder. Create test questions; answer them out loud.
9 Tactile/Kinesthetic Learning Style Learners with tactile learning style prefer to learn by doing touching, manipulating objects, and doing things. When you are assembling an item of furniture, do you ignore the included instructions and jump right into the assembly?
10 Tactile/Kinesthetic Learners Learn best by doing Hands On Explore the environment. Utilize concrete objects as learning aids. Write textbook notes on 5x7 cards. Keep a card box of notes divided by classes. Re-write and reduce notes to 5x7 cards. Move around when rehearsing information. Create concepts maps and diagrams to touch the information.

14 Instructor Learning Styles Instructors often teach based on their personal learning style. Consider instructor s style when studying. Real learning is not always easy or comfortable -- get out of your comfort zone and expect personal growth. Learn to adapt.
15 Adapting to Lectures Auditory Careful listening. Join study groups to discuss further. Visual Take detailed notes. Rewrite notes and add diagrams, charts, or graphs. Kinesthetic Take detailed notes. Rewrite notes using the computer. Create note cards.
16 Adapting to Visual Presentations Visual Take notes, complete with descriptions and diagrams of the images presented. Auditory Sit towards the front of the room. Participate in a study group where you can discuss the content of the presentation. Kinesthetic Sit towards the front of the room. Re-create visuals from presentation. Create cards or posters with images and information from lecture.
17 Adapting to Group Collaboration Auditory Come to class prepared to actively participate. Visual Take notes during group work. Rewrite notes so you have a written record of what was covered in group work. Kinesthetic Take notes during group work. Create models, designs, flow charts to demonstrate the conversation and content.
18 What s next? Think about your learning style next time you re in class or studying. Ask for help! Schedule an appointment at the Student Success Center with a Learning Specialist. Keep trying! It is an ongoing process.
