5 Common and Proper Nouns A common noun names any person, place, or thing. A proper noun names a particular person, place, or thing. Proper nouns begin with capital letters. 8 Vocabulary Synonyms Sometimes you come across a word you don t know. The author may give you a clue about its meaning. The clue may be a synonym, a word that means the same thing. Look for synonyms to figure out the meaning of unfamiliar words. Directions Read the sentences. One word is underlined. Circle the synonym of the underlined word. Guide words are printed in large dark type at the top of each dictionary or glossary page. They show the first and last entry words on the page.
