2 Y1 Art Week

3 What we know about artists in year 1 Artists paint paintings of people! Samuel Artists make sculptures for art galleries and they are precious. Arthur Artists draw pictures in detail. Maariya Artists make self portraits! Francis Artists sometimes draw things we don t know. Marley

4 Mixed media pearly kings and queens Year 1 have been learning about our local area and London this term and this has inspired our art work this art week. We learnt about Pearly kings and queens and how extravagant their costumes are. We used mixed media to make a life drawing.

5 Sketching Hackney Town Hall We went out into our local area to sketch buildings. We used what we had learnt about other artists and their style.

6 Inspiring artists Today we met Lowry! He was an artist who was born in Lancashire and painted the towns and cities near to him. He was famous for his 'matchstick men' people which were very simple, allowing him to concentrate on the buildings. It also meant he could paint a lot of people to show the large populations in the city.

7 Globe design For our final project in art week we would be creating a globe using paper mache. We looked some globes and sketched some in our sketch books. As a class we discovered that the shape of a globe was called a sphere. We also discussed what you could see on a globe. We noticed that the land was green and the water was blue. Here are some of the sketches from our sketch books.

8 Paper mache Creating our paper mache globes was a lot of fun. We began with an inflated balloon and worked carefully in stages to cover the balloon with newsprint and glue. It was a messy job because we needed to dip the strips of paper into the glue to make sure that they would stick! I need to cover my balloon with strips of paper.- Sirenity. When we had covered the balloon fully with a layer of paper, we left it to dry overnight. We then repeated the process again the next day. This would make the globe strong.

9 Painting our globes Once our layers of paper mache had dried and the shape of the globe was correct, it was time to paint! We needed to remind ourselves of what it should look like, so we went back to our sketches. We began by painting the entire balloon with blue paint. This would be the water. We used a biggest paint brushes to cover a larger area more quickly. The next day we painted on the continents. We needed to use a smaller paint brush to paint the outline of each continent and then we filled it in with our green paint. Have a look at our fantastic globes!

27 LI: To master techniques. In this lesson some of the children got dressed up as Egyptians. The rest of us had to draw them using our mixed media to add shadow and tone using different techniques. I can use a variety of techniques to add interesting effects. I can make observations from real life studies

29 2B Pencils I can use a 2B pencil to experiment with pattern, tone and texture. We used 2B pencils in our sketch books to experiment with tone, patterns and shadows.

30 LI: To take inspiration from the greats. I can explain how the work of Ancient Egyptian artists and designers were influential to both society and other artists. In this lesson we looked at lots of different art from the Ancient Egyptian times. We looked at architecture, sculptures and paintings. We then chose 4 sections that we liked and sketched them into our books using our 2B pencils.

31 Pastels I can use pastels to experiment with colour, pattern, tone and texture. We were able to apply a range of the skills we used with 2B pencils and mixed media earlier in the week to using pastels too. However the pastels allowed us to experiment with how the colours mixed and interacted too.

32 LI: To master techniques. I can use a variety of techniques to add interesting effects to my own Ancient Egyptian jewellery design. In this lesson we looked at lots of Ancient Egyptian jewellery and discussed all the different things that the jewellery had on it. We then thought about our own Egyptian jewellery and what it would have on it. We used our pastels to create designs of our own Ancient Egyptian Jewellery.

33 LI: To master techniques. I can use a variety of techniques to add interesting effects. In this lesson we looked at lots Ancient Egyptian cartouches. We chose 4 sections from the different cartouches and sketched them in our sketch books.

34 LI: To develop ideas. I can collect information and make sketches to help plan for my design. I can revisit and review my ideas. In this lesson we looked at different cartouches and drew our own one ready to make them from clay. We looked at our names in hieroglyphs and designed the cartouche.

35 LI: To master techniques. I can make an interesting and original Ancient Egyptian cartouche. We used clay to create our lovely cartouches.

36 It is really important to reflect on our work and others. We did 2 self assessments and a peer assessment during art week. Have a look at some of our responses!

38 Art Week in Year 4

39 Lesson 1, part 1 Mastering Techniques This term in Year 4 we are focusing on The Romans. In our first Art lesson we looked at the great adventures of the lead pencil.

40 Lesson 1, part 2 Mixed Media Portraits Our teachers chose three children to dress up as Romans for our portraits. We used our pencil techniques and experimented with mixed media to create portraits. This included three types of pen, fine, broad and thick. We also worked with chalk and charcoal. Proportion is extremely important when drawing portraits so we look our time to make sure the body was drawn to scale. We also overcame our fears of making mistakes and used the whole page rather than a small section to create the portraits.

41 Lesson 2 Taking Inspiration from the Greats In our second Art lesson we explored a range of art work from Ancient Roman times. We discussed the artists techniques, style and interpretation. We made studies in our sketch books of small sections of art work that interested us.

42 Lesson 3 Roman Shields In this lesson we looked at examples of Roman soldier shields. Inspired by images and descriptions we designed our own shields. We then developed our designs using water colours and pastels.

43 Lesson 4 Amphora Sketches In our fourth lesson we explored examples of Roman amphora sculptures. We then used our previously acquired skills to complete mixed media drawings of an interesting amphora.

44 Lesson 5 Designing and Experimenting After carefully sketching a Roman amphora, we began to think about designing our own, which would be made from clay. We thought carefully about how we would create the details and had a practise with the clay.

47 Evaluating After all our hard work we selfassessed our amphora. We also peer-assessed our partners work and commented on what we thought they did well and any room for improvement.

49 Art Week Year 5 Cedar, Holly and Lilac

50 Our project During Art Week this Autumn, our classes were inspired by some of the art work that we had been exposed to when learning about the Ancient Mayans in our Topic lessons. The Ancient Mayans, like many other ancient civilizations, have a wealth of art works to draw inspiration from, but we were particularly impressed by the Mayan lintels that give clues to the Mayan way of life. As a result, we tasked ourselves with creating our own lintels based on Ancient Mayan designs.

51 As the lintels that we are going to create do not use any colour and are carved into stone, we had to use cross-hatching techniques to add detail to our designs. Therefore, we spent a lot of time practising cross-hatching techniques to shade objects. Practising techniques: Crosshatching

52 Soft-pastel work In developing our artistic techniques, we sketched some of the fruits and vegetables that were often farmed in Southern-America during the Mayan-era, and coloured these using softpastels. We found that we could create some interesting effects in terms of shading by using our fingers to smudge the colours.

53 Researching Significant Art We took a look at some of the Mayan art that exists and the themes and techniques that are commonly found in a number of their pieces. We found that Mayans often depict mythical creatures and representations of their gods, and they often include hieroglyphics that help to explain the story of each art piece.

54 After studying some Mayan art, we used mixedmedia to create representations of some of the gods that Mayans often depicted in their statues and carvings. We had the choice of using charcoal, 2B pencils or ink-pens to create our own versions, and brought in some of the techniques that we have been practising so far. Mixed-media

55 Working with clay Working with clay is messy, difficult and time-consuming. One of the key things we had to keep in mind was that the drier the clay got, the harder it became to mould it into the shapes that we needed. So, our first task was to make a slip, which is like a small bowl made out of clay that we kept filled with water, and every time we found the clay to be too difficult to shape, we would add moisture to the clay. After this, we rolled out our clay and cut a rectangle that was about 10cm in width and 14cm in length, with a thickness of around 1cm.

56 Working with clay Then, we added a border to our rectangle and rolled patterns onto our clay using a patterned-rolling-pin. After this, we started making the shapes that we wanted to add to our designs, based on our final design that we had developed during the week. To add detail, we carved using thin plastic, and then attached the shapes securely onto the lintel with moisture. Once happy with our lintel, we had to make it free standing by adding our own base and stand. This was tricky, because we had to attach it without ruining our design yet still make sure that it was freestanding.

60 First of all we experimented using mixed media to create a variety of effects. We took our pencils for a walk across our page to experiment with tone and contrast. We re-capped our previous learning about hatching and smudging.

61 Then we used a variety of techniques to add interesting effects to our mixed media sketches of evacuees. We couldn t find any real evacuees so dressed up ourselves!

63 We took more inspiration from Bill Brandt s photography of the underground shelters. We used his photography to create our own underground scene and sketched parts of it using a range of techniques.

64 Before we started to make our armature sculpture, we planed what it would look like at the end.

65 We then started to give the sculpture shape by bending the wire. We then filled in the body with newsprint paper and masking tape.

66 After making a solid sculpture, we moved on to wrapping it in paper bandages covered in cellulose paste. Once that was completed we used small pieces of coloured paper to add detail to our sculpture.
