PSHE Policy Ravenscote School Introduction In order to prepare young children for their future, it is vital that they are equipped with the skills that will enable them to become informed and independent citizens. It is necessary to provide pupils with key facts and information about issues in society, to allow them to make independent and reasoned decisions of their own. Personal, Social and Health Education and Citizenship is a means by which pupils can experience such issues in a secure environment. Every Child Matters We recognise the important contribution that PSHE makes to the Every Child Matters Outcomes: Be healthy Stay safe Enjoy and achieve Make a positive contribution Achieve economic well being Our programme aims to explore each of these themes and help our pupils achieve the outcomes. Aims 1. To provide pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding that they need to lead confident and healthy independent lives. 2. To provide pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to become informed, active and responsible citizens. 3. To promote and foster social skills, self-esteem and responsibility for the pupils own learning. 4. To encourage pupils to reflect on their experiences and understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. 5. To provide pupils with opportunities to learn to understand and respect our common humanity, diversity and differences so that they can go on to form the effective, fulfilling relationships that are an essential part of life and learning.

Pupil Learning Outcomes The PSHE programme will support the development of the skills, attitudes, values and patterns of behaviour, which will enable pupils to Have a sense of purpose Value self and others Form relationships Make and act on informed decisions Communicate effectively Work with others Respond to challenge Be an active partner in their own learning Be active citizens within the local community Explore issues related to living in a democratic society Become healthy and fulfilled individuals Organisation of PSHE at Ravenscote PSHE at Ravenscote is based on and around six core values. PSHE is timetabled for one hour every other week in each class. Lessons are Values based, the lesson objectives are obtained from out core Values document. Each Year group has a member of Staff responsible for planning the lesson, based on the proved objectives, to meet the needs of that Year Group. Additional theme weeks are held on a termly basis e.g. Internet Safety, Healthy Eating, Anti-Bullying weeks. This year ( ) Packtypes has been introduced to the whole school. A system of encouraging emotional literacy, Packtypes lessons accounted for the Spring Term PSHE in 2014.

PSHE is also taught through cross-curricular opportunities e.g. Sex and Relationship Education within Science. Children are given the opportunity to take part in a residential experience in Year 6. Children in Year 4 have a two night residential experience. Years 3 & 5 have a sleepover night which takes place at the school. Assemblies are based on our values and support the delivery of PSHE. Children are given the opportunity to develop their personal skills through roles and responsibilities in and around the school e.g. Prefects, Peer Mediators, School Council, House Captains. Content of Programme The timetabled programme follows a similar pattern in each year group but different activities are planned around each theme. Our school values are: Responsibility Honesty Team Work Happiness Excellence Respect Parental involvement We believe it is important to have the support of parents and the wider community for the PSHE programme. Parents will be given the opportunity to find out about and discuss the schools programme through: Parent awareness evenings e.g. internet safety Parents evenings e.g. residential trip Information leaflets/displays e.g. anti-bullying leaflet

Involvement in policy development through questionnaires and other feedback opportunities Teaching and Learning A variety of teaching and learning strategies are used to deliver PSHE which take into account pupils age, development, understanding and needs. Pupils need to work in a safe, secure climate to be able to explore their own and others attitudes, values and skills. Lessons will involve a high level of interaction where each pupil has opportunities for learning through: The development of a trusting relationship between the teacher and the pupils enabling the consideration of sensitive issues to take place Collaborative work Opportunities for reflection Challenge within a safe environment Respect for each contribution Negotiation Accommodating new information and skills Building on current experience and using first-hand learning to achieve positive ends ICT Opportunities ICT should be used in the teaching of PSHE where the opportunity arises. ICT should be used to enrich and stimulate pupils learning opportunities. ICT can help in the learning of pupils PSHE experiences: By providing a range of information sources, including the internet By providing the opportunity to reflect on their experiences through use of movie cameras By providing the use of wireless laptops and computers

By utilizing the IWB to share information and images with the whole class and make learning interactive Monitoring and Evaluating the PSHE Programme The PSHE coordinator will monitor the delivery of the programme through observation and discussion with Colleagues and Children. Evaluation of the programme s effectiveness will be conducted on the basis of: Pupil and teacher evaluation of the content and learning processes Staff meetings to review and share experience Assessment of pupil learning outcomes Links to other policies There is a clear link between the following policies: Sex and Relationship Education Drug and Alcohol Education Child Protection
