1 Camp Shelanu Staff Job Descriptions 2015 The following jobs are being posted for Camp Shelanu 2015: Counselors (Age 16+ and entering 11th grade and up) Inclusion Counselors (18+) Aftercare counselors (Age 16+ and entering 11th grade and up) Aftercare Supervisor (mature college student or graduate) Specialists in Nature, Art, Music, Sports, etc. (part-time, professionals and mature college students) Arts and Crafts Camp Specialist (professionals, mature college students or graduates) Nature Adventure Camp Specialist (professionals, mature college students or graduates) Basketball Camp Specialist (professionals, mature college students or graduates) Middle School and LIT Program Facilitator (mature college student or graduate) Camp Shelanu is a program of the Levin Jewish Community Center. As a Jewish day camp, Camp Shelanu is based on Jewish values and includes learning about Jewish culture and traditions. However, there is no religious instruction or discussion of theology at camp. All JCC programs are open to anyone who wishes to participate, regardless of religious affiliation or background. Camp Shelanu takes place at the Levin JCC at 1937 W Cornwallis Rd, Durham NC, Staff enjoys use of the facility on weeks they work, including access to gym, fitness center, and 2 outdoor pools. The Levin JCC does not discriminate on the basis of sex, sexual orientation, gender expression, age, race, ethnic origin, color, religion, nation origin, creed, marital status, disabled veteran status, or the presence of any sensory, mental, and/or physical disability that doesn t prevent the performance of the specific core tasks of this position. 2 Junior/Senior Camp Counselor Job Description This position is a seasonal employee who reports directly to the Camp Director and Assistant Camp Director. The main responsibility of this position is to lead a group of campers in having a fun, safe, enriching camp experience. 16 years old by the start of employment. Applicants under 18 will need to furnish a worker s permit. Entering 11 th or 12 th grade (Junior Counselor) or entering or continuing college (Senior counselor) Experience in working with youth. Camp or other group experience preferred. Must have enthusiasm, be adaptable, dependable, and possess an excellent work ethic. Must be able to accept guidance and supervision. CPR and first aid certifications - there will be a scheduled training for camp staff before training week. Staff can attend that training at no cost, or one of their choosing at their own expense. Knowledge in Jewish programming is a plus. Available June 15 August 14 as well as training June 10, 11, 12 and 14. Most counselors are scheduled for 1-3 weeks off - we will make an effort to accommodate preferences in weeks off; however, we do prioritize staff who can commit to the training week and all scheduled weeks of camp. Able to work 8:15 am-3:45 pm daily and rotate working Before Care (starting at 8:00am) and After Care (until 5:30pm). Responsibilities: Protect the health, safety and welfare of all campers. Accompany campers to all activities. With co-counselor, plan and implement bunk time programming with assigned camp group. With other staff, plan and lead all-camp activities. Support specialists by participating in programming and assisting as needed. Supervise campers participation in structured and unstructured activities. Facilitate group unity by promoting camper friendships and resolving conflict fairly. Maintain positive relationships with campers by showing sensitivity to campers emotional needs Work with Inclusion Facilitator in integrating campers with special needs into the camp group. Be a role model for campers by following all policies and demonstrating enthusiasm, sense of Implement positive behavior-management techniques. 3 Inclusion Counselor Job Description This position is a seasonal employee who reports to the Camp Director and works closely with the Inclusion Facilitator. The main responsibility of this position is to promote inclusion of campers with special needs in having a fun, safe, enriching camp experience. Camp Shelanu has an inclusion program funded in part through a generous grant from the National Inclusion Project. 18 years old by the start of employment. Professionals and mature college students. Experience in working with youth. Camp or other group experience as well as experience with people with special needs preferred. Must have enthusiasm, be adaptable, dependable, and possess an excellent work ethic. Must be able to accept guidance and supervision. CPR and first aid certifications - there will be a scheduled training for camp staff before training week. Staff can attend that training at no cost, or one of their choosing at their own expense. Knowledge in Jewish programming is a plus. Available June 15 August 14 as well as training June 10, 11, 12 and 14, and other trainings dates as needed. 4 After Care Counselor and After Care Supervisor Job Description This position is a seasonal employee who reports directly to the Camp Director. The main responsibility of this position is to lead campers in the aftercare program having a fun, safe, enriching camp experience. Aftercare Supervisor also serves as Manager-on-Duty during Aftercare hours. 18+ and mature college student or graduate for the Aftercare Supervisor, 16+ and going into 11 th grade for a Junior Aftercare Counselor. Experience in working with youth. Camp or other group experience preferred. Must have enthusiasm, be adaptable, dependable, and possess an excellent work ethic. Must be able to accept guidance and supervision. CPR and first aid certifications - there will be a scheduled training for camp staff before training week. Staff can attend that training at no cost, or one of their choosing at their own expense. Knowledge in Jewish programming is a plus. Available June 15 August 14 as well as training June 10, 11, 12 and 14. Be a role model for campers by following all policies and demonstrating enthusiasm, sense of Implement positive behavior-management techniques. Aftercare Supervisor serves as Manager-on-Duty, being the contact person for any camper or parent concerns during the aftercare shift and handling any emergency situations. Attend any staff meetings, open houses, special and camp-wide programs, parent-staff meetings and family nights as designated by the Camp Director. Help maintain space and supplies. 5 Specialist Job Description This position is a seasonal employee who reports directly to the Camp Director. The main responsibility of this position is to plan and implement specialty camp programming or specialty activities in traditional camp. Arts and Crafts Specialty Camp Specialist - Plans and teaches two week-long (Mon-Fri) Arts and Crafts specialty camps (4-5 hours programming/day) for k-1 st grade June 29- July 3 and July This person could possibly also serve as the Art Specialist for Traditional Camp for the duration of the summer. Nature Adventure Camp Specialist Plans and teaches a week long (Mon-Fri) Nature Adventure Camp (4-5 hours programming/day) for 2 nd 5 th grade June 29-July3. Skills include survival, building fires, putting up tents, identifying edible and poisonous plants and animals, and orienteering. Basketball Camp Specialist Plans and teaches a week long (Mon-Fri) Basketball Camp (4-5 hours programming/day) for 2 nd 5 th grade August 3 7. This person could possible also serve as the Sports Specialist for Traditional Camp for the duration of the summer. Skills include: basketball fundamentals, individual defense, team defense, shooting, teamwork, self-discipline and sportsmanship. Activities include drills, games, and scrimmages as well as team-building activities Traditional Camp Specialist - Teaches specialty to each traditional camp group (kindergarten-8 th grade) one or more times per week for minutes. Specialty areas include: Arts and Crafts, Cooking, Nature, Sports, Music, Dance, Judaics, etc. Specialists arrange a schedule of 6-12 hours/wk with the Camp Director. Camp runs June 15-Aug 14, Specialists would also be required to come for parts of staff training week June 10, 11, 12, and 14. A minimum of an undergraduate degree and experience in a camp/youth environment. Extensive knowledge of specialty area. Experience developing, organizing and carrying out youth programming that is developmentally appropriate for ages Must have enthusiasm, be adaptable, dependable, and possess an excellent work ethic. CPR and first aid certifications preferred. Knowledge in Jewish programming is a plus. Responsibilities Develop lesson plans for all programming for specialty area. Purchase supplies and maintain receipts within assigned budget Teach specialty to groups of campers ages 5-13 Protect the health, safety and welfare of all campers. Facilitate group unity by prmoting camper friendships and resolving conflict fairly.

7 Middle School Specialist and LIT Facilitator Job Description This position is a seasonal employee who reports directly to the Camp Director. The main responsibility of this position is to facilitate a 3-week sessions of a Leadership-in-Training (LIT) program for teens and lead a 2-week Middle School Camp (Camp Sabra). Schedule: Staff training week June 10, 11, 12, and 14. Leadership-in-Training sessions June 15-July 3. Middle School Camp (Camp Sabra) July Mon-Fri 8:15-3:45, plus 3-5 extended day field trips or overnights. Mature college student or college graduate and experience in a camp/youth environment. Extensive knowledge of youth development and leadership development. Experience developing, organizing and carrying out programming that is developmentally appropriate for ages and Must have enthusiasm, be adaptable, dependable, and possess an excellent work ethic. CPR and first aid certifications preferred. Knowledge in Jewish programming is a plus. Responsibilities Assist in developing and updating the LIT program curriculum. Implement the LIT program for 4-8 rising 9 th and 10 th graders, including facilitating training sessions, encouraging positive group dynamics, leading trips and overnights, working one-on-one with participants, and coordinating with other camp staff. Lead the Middle School Camp, along with another counselor, overseeing a group of 8-12 rising 6 th and 7 th graders. Protect the health, safety and welfare of all campers. Facilitate group unity by promoting camper friendships and resolving conflict fairly. Maintain positive relationships with campers by showing sensitivity to campers emotional needs Work with counselors to implement positive behavior-management techniques. Work with Inclusion Facilitator in integrating campers with special needs into the camp group.
