1 JOB DESCRIPTION 1. JOB DETAILS Job Title: Education Facilitator Hours: Full time/part-time Unit/Department: Education Department Reports to: Education Manager Tenure: Permanent 2. JOB SCOPE Rowcroft Hospice is a charity, providing specialist care to people with life limiting illnesses living in South Devon. Rowcroft s specialist services include Hospice at Home, outpatient therapy services, community team, chronic oedema service and a 17 bedded in-patient ward. Care is provided at the hospice and wherever it is required in the wider community; in residential and nursing homes, community hospitals and in people s homes. Rowcroft s care covers 300 square miles and a population of 283,000. Development of the Education Department and programme has been agreed with the aim of extending the existing provision of clinical education in order to achieve Rowcroft Hospice s strategic aims. 3. JOB PURPOSE: To develop end of life and specialist palliative care education to meet the developmental needs of professionals and others within the hospice and across the health and social care community, in line with the National Strategic Frameworks and End of Life Care Strategy To work collaboratively with other health and social care service and education providers, CCG s and other agencies, to plan, develop and deliver palliative care education to healthcare professionals, volunteers, carers and patients To be a provide educational mentorship of staff as required and clinical supervision within the organisation To contribute to the development and implementation of Rowcroft s strategy To support the professional development of all hospice staff and volunteers (clinical and non clinical) 1

2 2. DIMENSIONS: The Education Facilitator is a member of the Education Team and leads on designated parts of the education programme, reporting in to the Education Manager. They are required to: Work with the multi-professional, and non-clinical and senior management teams to promote and develop a learning culture within Rowcroft Work with the Education Manager to co-ordinate all external education and training by the hospice Promote and foster high standards of education and evidence based practice for staff involved in patient care Work with the education administrator to ensure smooth running of educational programmes for clinical and non-clinical staff within the hospice and across the health and social care community Work collaboratively to develop an integrated approach to palliative care education and development with all stakeholders. Budget: to be an authorised signatory for items less than 1,000. e.g. educational equipment and invoicing 3. KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:- EDUCATION: Work with the Education Manager to further develop educational courses already offered by the organisation Ensure that a range of educational and development opportunities is made available to partner organisations staff and volunteers to meet their individual needs and their service development objectives. Design and deliver courses and educational sessions internally and externally as delegated, such as the Enhancing Palliative Care Skills course Act as a resource person for access to courses, e-learning, library and other educational information Work within any educational service level agreements with the NHS contract and agreed education programme Ensure that course evaluation and feedback processes are maintained and that outcomes are fed into future development of the provision Act in the role of educational mentor for staff as agreed by Education Manager Delivery of Enhanced Communication Skills training Design and deliver Train the Trainer courses to support the development of teaching skills for Rowcroft s growing number of clinically-based facilitators To use good keyboard skills and IT literacy to support the extensive need to use VDU for the research of current, bench marked, evidence-based material to support education programmes; power point development; development of other learning materials including handouts; development of reports and statistics; and electronic communication Service Development: Contribute to the development of strategy and new education initiatives within the organisation and externally, leading on delegated projects Ensure service standards are maintained by the delivery of updates, education sessions and educational advice for staff and volunteers Work collaboratively with senior colleagues in the development of the education service ensuring congruence with Rowcroft s aims and values Work with the Education Manager to develop education programmes run in partnership with other agencies, NHS End of Life Care Commissioners and other health care organisations. Work with the Education Manager to develop innovative methods to deliver education 2

3 To produce statistical reports relating to the outcomes and effectiveness of specific courses to support the biannual commissioner s report. Work with senior colleagues in further developing clinical supervision throughout the organisation To develop and implement a strategy that will enable Rowcroft to deliver degree level modules in End of Life care and related subjects. As module leader and tutor, to take responsibility for assessing/analysing and marking of academic assignments according to the university marking criteria. Work with other education institutions to develop academic programmes available internally and externally. PROFESSIONAL: As a specialist in palliative care, teach palliative care skills within the Professional Codes of Conduct and Practice, maintaining own registration To practice safely according to all organisational policies, procedures and competencies To be responsible for maintaining a personal awareness of professional developments in general but particularly in palliative care and education To undertake relevant further personal education necessary to performing the role To be available for professional advice and career development for other practitioners To maintain clinical credibility RESEARCH AND AUDIT: To ensure education planned and delivered is evidence based using the latest credible research available. To support staff in developing critical appraisal skills and accessing literature reviews in support of their professional development To advise on the potential learning opportunities for staff within any proposed research projects planned and conducted by hospice staff. To support and collaborate on appropriate research studies where these impact on training and education of staff, volunteers, patients or carers. 5. ORGANISATION CHART (Please see attached) 6. COMMUNICATIONS AND WORKING RELATIONSHIPS Provision of small and large group training, including group facilitation, action learning and other interactive learning sets. Maintain effective communication with organisation management ensuring the educational needs across the health and social care community are identified and provided for Present complex, sensitive information and talks at professional and public forums about specialist palliative care and the organisation as required Be available for one to one advice and discussion on suitable course/education requirements, role modelling leadership and mentorship skills Working with the Education Manager and other Senior Managers across the community to identify new areas for education development Working closely with the senior clinical staff to provide educational mentorship of staff as required Build relationships with partnerships organisations and participate in co-delivery as agreed with line manager 3

INFECTION CONTROL CLAUSE Infection Control is everyone's responsibility. All staff, both clinical and non clinical, are required to adhere to the organisation's Infection Prevention and Control Policies and make every effort to maintain high standards of infection control at all times, thereby reducing the burden of Healthcare Associated Infections including MRSA. All staff employed by Rowcroft Hospice have the following key responsibilities: Staff must decontaminate their hands prior to and after direct patient care or contact with the patient's surroundings; Staff members have a duty to attend mandatory infection control training provided for them by the Hospice; Staff members who develop an infection (other than common colds and illness) that may be transmittable to patients have a duty to contact Occupational Health. 11.
