1 The Faculty of Health Sciences Dean s Research Initiatives Fund The Dean s Research Initiatives Fund is specifically designed to support new and innovative research that will enhance Trinity College s and the Faculty of Health Sciences ability to compete for large-scale, interdisciplinary, single- and multiinvestigator extramural awards. It aims to advance the research priorities of Trinity College s Strategic Plan , raise the national and international profile of the University and increase receipt of Horizon 2020 and HRB awards, as well as other funding sources. Fund Objectives The Dean s Research Initiatives Fund will award investigators and collaborative research teams with seed funding that provides the foundation necessary to secure extramural funding for cutting edge, innovative and transformative research. The Principle Investigator must be a member of staff of the Faculty of Health Sciences in Trinity College. Specific objectives are to: 1. Pursue new research opportunities and/or develop preliminary data that leads to the development of successful grant applications from public and private entities, particularly Horizon 2020 and the HRB. 2. Advance novel, innovative research ideas that promise to have a tangible impact on the respective research discipline and/or body of scholarly work. 3. Advance research that has a broader impact and benefit to society. 4. Increase the national and international reputation of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Trinity College and its research portfolio. Research Focus Areas Proposals must focus on new and innovative research that leads to a specific application for extramural awards in one of the following research focus areas of Trinity College s Strategic Plan: 1. Ageing 2. Cancer 3. Biomedical Sciences 4. Digital Health 5. Research advancing evidence-based clinical practice Page 1 of 5

2 2015 Awards In there will be five awards of 20,000 and projects must be completed within one year of the award. Evaluation Criteria Proposals for funding will be reviewed based on the following scoring criteria: Significant Scientific, Scholarly Merit Evidence of innovative, transformative, interdisciplinary research and scholarship and linkage to the Initiatives Fund priorities (30%). High Potential for Extramural Funding Ability to attract future pubic and/or private funding (defining the extramural funding pathway required) (30%). Broader Impact Address how the proposed research or scholarship will have a broader societal impact or benefit (10%). Record of Achievement Strength of the record of achievement of the principal investigator and/or research team members (15%). On-Time Projects Deliverables The likelihood of success of the principal investigator and/or research team in accomplishing all of the stated research objectives on time and within the requested resources (15%). Preferred Criteria - But Not Required Multi-investigator collaboration and the inclusion of Ussher staff is preferred. Matching funds are preferred. Identifying a specific, future funding opportunity is referred. (Note: Applicants must provide a detailed pathway for future extramural funding from a government, industry, private, or not-for-profit sponsor). Page 2 of 5

3 Proposal Format Completed application packages must be submitted electronically as a single PDF file to lena.doherty@tcd.ie Below are the six (6) required sections that must be completed for an application package: Letter of Intent: ; Due 12pm Friday 2 nd October 2015 The Letter of Intent must indicate: project title, members of the research team, indication of any Ussher involvement, which of the five research focus areas the project falls under. The Letter of Intent must be signed by the Principal Investigator, who must be staff within Faculty of Health Sciences at TCD, the co-principal investigators and any collaborating investigator(s) on the research team indicating their commitment to participate in the research proposal. Submissions to: lena.doherty@tcd.ie Cover Page: Title of Project Principal Investigator(s) / Research Team Funding Requested Project Abstract words or less Project Narrative: 5 page maximum, 1.5 spaced, one inch margins, at least 11 point font. Describe the project, innovative and transformative nature of research, research plan, timeline, strategy for future growth and funding funds source. Describe the principal investigator or research team s contributions (as applicable) to the research proposed and the project s organization to achieve its immediate outcomes and larger funding goals. Discuss the participation and involvement of post-doctoral students, other staff and/or students. Biosketch(es): half page per researcher maximum Provide biosketches for the principal investigator, co-principal investigators, and other members of the research team (as applicable). Page 3 of 5

4 Budget: The budget may include salaries for students, post-doctoral associates, supplies, travel, and equipment. Faculty academic year salaries are not to be funded While collaborations with non-trinity researchers will be permitted if there is a gap identified in the research project, funding to non-trinity researchers is not permitted. Program funding is one-time. Funding will not be available for multiple-year awards. Funding should be expended over a maximum of 12 months beginning when the awards are made. Budget Justification: The budget justification should include a narrative explaining how the costs were estimated, along with a justification of planned spending. Application Deadline: October 29 th Review Panel and Awards Proposals will be reviewed by a Peer Review Committee with expertise in each of the identified research categories. The Peer Review Committee will include Senior Faculty from Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty members from across the University and external reviewers, selected by the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences. Review committee members will be required to disclose potential conflicts of interest. Awards for winning proposals will be based on the recommendations of the Peer Review Committee with final decisions by the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences.
