A FAMILY BREAK IN PARIS ARRIVING IN PARIS WITH THE FAMILY All the modes of transport for getting to the centre of Paris from a train station or airport by bus, metro, RER or taxi. Paris is served by six train stations situated in the centre of the capital. From these, you can take a metro or one of the taxis parked in front of every station. If you are arriving by plane, then there are several ways of getting to the city centre. The Orlybus links Orly airport to place Denfert-Rochereau in the south of Paris, in around 30 minutes (fare: 7.20). Orlyval, a special metro, transports travellers to Antony RER station; from here, RER line B takes travellers on to the city centre (fare Orly-Paris: /adult; 5.65 /child 4-10 yrs). From Roissy- Charles-De-Gaulle airport (Terminal 1), RER line B takes you to the city centre Les Halles) in 36 minutes for The Roissybus service takes travellers to the Opéra district, in less than an hour (fare: 10). You can also opt for a taxi: the current charge for transfers between Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle and central Paris is at least 50, with a 15% increase at night, on Sundays and public holidays, and around 35 from Orly. A cheaper alternative is the shared taxi system. Wecab, a service provided by Taxis G7, enables you to reduce the cost of a journey by booking in advance. (one-way: from 9 for adults and 5.50 for children; round-trip: from 18 for adults. Fares vary according to itinerary). Finally, different private shuttle services can be pre-booked at a fixed fare. According to the number of people travelling, you can choose a people carrier, minivan or minibus via companies like Your Shuttle in Paris or Super Euro Shuttle. The latter criss-cross the 20 arrondissements, whilst the RER (suburban express trains) serve the surrounding areas. NB not all stations and lines have escalators and lifts to facilitate access for pushchairs and disabled people. And on some buses, only two open pushchairs are permitted: it is therefore advisable to fold your pushchair if there are already two pushchairs open aboard. Note also, there is no charge for children aged under 4, and children aged 4 to 9 pay half fare. A metro or bus ticket costs 1.70 for one ticket and for un carnet (10 tickets). The ticket T+ allows travellers to change buses or change between a bus and a tram on their journey within a time period of 1hr30. Children enjoy travelling in a metro carriage and seeing Paris monuments from some over-ground sections on lines 2 and 6! Between Olympiades metro station and Saint-Lazare train station, line 14 has a ghostly feel to it as it is fully automatic, with no driver. It hurtles through the tunnels visible through its panoramic glass windows, in front and behind. An impressive sight! Line 1, one of the capital s oldest metro lines, has also been renovated and is now also fully automated. RATP accès gratuit NEW! inauguration, réouverture coup de cœur 2

3 > Taxis and minivans for families With people-carrier taxis and minivans, large families can get around with ease. In Paris, regular saloon taxis are generally limited to three or four passengers (three in the back and sometimes a fourth person in the front). There are several solutions for large families. You can easily find large estate car or minivan type taxis in the streets or you can order one from Parisian companies. By hiring a minivan, you can enjoy a chauffeured journey to or from the airport or even days out with Taxis G7. You can also hire a Taxis bleus ( 9.90 payable on booking and then the fare for the journey). Their minivans can accommodate up to 7 passengers. The 43 tanks at the Aquarium du Trocadéro host an infinite variety of species: angel fish, golden trevally, and thousands of others. Cartoon films add to the pleasure of a visit to this zen world. Even more full of activity are the zoos! Right in the heart of the capital, the Jardin des Plantes menagerie is one of the world s oldest zoos; it is home to orangutans, big cats, red pandas, Arabian oryx, etc. Across the other side of the garden, in the Grande Galerie de l évolution of the Muséum d histoire naturelle, there are dinosaurs, mammoths and other life-sized animals to discover. The museum has recently opened the Galerie des enfants, a permanent exhibition for 6 to 12-year-olds based around four themes: the town, the river, the tropical forest and the planet in general. To see farm animals in the countryside, go to the Ferme de Paris, in Bois de Vincennes. But also to the Petite Ferme Normande at the Jardin d Acclimatation which attracts rare domestic species. The Grand Volière at the park is also an important part of historic heritage. In line with its policies, the city offers various sites for the public to discover biodiversity in a fun yet educational manner. You can discover the rich flora and fauna at bird reserves in the Bois de Boulogne. The Jardin des Papillons (butterfly garden) is open from May to October, at the Parc floral, in the Bois de Vincennes, where your will also find the Maison Paris- Nature for a biodiversity itinerary. At the menagerie at the Jardin des Plantes, the genetic heritage of species is managed in order to preserve their power of adaptation to nature. The Maison du Jardinage (House of Gardening) at the Parc de Bercy has a vegetable garden and temporary exhibitions. Shows and parades often go on throughout the day. You can even stay the night in these cartoon film settings, and some parks also have onsite hotels. At that time, the park showcased luxuriant plants in its winter garden and also some exotic animals. After the war of 1870, the garden moved in a more playful direction. However, the garden has sought to retain its educational vocation and organizes numerous 2-hour workshops (arts, science, nature and cooking) throughout the year. The Jardin d Acclimatation also offers a variety of attractions: a wooden climbing course for children aged 6 to 12, and the Belvédère de l Impératrice, a tree-lined promenade with views of the Eiffel Tower! Not forgetting the Village des Manèges for all ages (not many queues), play areas, pony rides, and the latest show. The Jardin d Acclimatation still has a little train now electric - that transports visitors from Porte Maillot. It is also synonymous with the enchanted river, a vestige from the attractions at the Universal Exhibition of 1926! The most recent attraction is an orienteering trail that takes adventurers through these places as far as the Korean garden. A 1hr30 trail including 18 stops with riddles, clues, tests of observation and other tests. Children can also take a pony or cart ride, sail small wooden boats around the large ornamental pond with the help of a long stick, play on the roundabouts and swings or ride the merry-go-round or even enjoy a puppet show. And when they re ready for a snack: two cafes, in the shade of the chestnut trees, and with small cosy rooms, serve hot chocolate, waffles, crêpes and ice-cream as well as savoury snacks. Eight stops enable you to get on and off as you like. To have a meal aboard a boat, there are brunches and dinner cruises, with Paris en Scène for example. And why not combine relaxation and education with La Croisière enchantée? Lila and Philou recount the wonderful history of Paris through songs and anecdotes.
