Course Objectives Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able: To demonstrate a working knowledge of sustainable design as it relates to the built environment. To identify and critique aspects of various sustainable building rating systems. To demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of LEED and the LEED process including sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, and innovation in design. To practice and prepare for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Associates examination. To gain an understanding of product certification programs. Evaluation Quizzes 25% Exams 10% LEED Green Associates Exam Registration 15% Service Learning Project 10% Sustainability critique 10% Final Exam 15% Oral Presentation 10% Participation & Attendance 5% TOTAL 100% Grading A = % B = 89 80% C = 79 70% D = 69 60% F = < 60% Course Content: Requirements will be introduced and fully explained in class: Quizzes: There will be eight (8) quizzes worth roughly 15 points. Quizzes will cover material from required course text. Exams: There will be five (5) exams throughout the semester taken online at the students convenience. Exams will be pass/fail; each worth 10 points. A printed copy of the exam results will be required for documentation (see schedule for due dates no exceptions). Exams will cover material from required readings and handouts. Final Exam: There will be a final exam covering lecture material, student presentations, guest speakers, readings, discussions, handouts, fieldtrips, and guest speakers. 1

2 Oral Presentation: PowerPoint presentation (roughly 10 minutes) of an assigned topic. LEED Green Associate Exam Registration (pass/fail): Students will be required to apply for eligibility and register for the LEED Green Associates exam. Documentation verifying the registered examination date and location must be supplied by the final exam date. Go to GBCI.org for fees and registration. Service Learning Project: Hands on project where students can apply principles of a LEED credit category. Sustainability Critique: This group assignment will provide an opportunity to develop a checklist based on the LEED core concepts. The checklist will then be used to evaluate a proposed design. Participation: The following factors will be taken into consideration: actively engaged during class time, participation on field visits, being prepared for class, contributing to class discussions, participating in group study exercises, and following course requirements. Course Requirements The student will follow all rules and regulations for student behavior related to class performance stated on the University Policies website. AU tigermail is the official medium for communication with students. It is the student s responsibility to check their e mail regularly and in a timely fashion concerning issues with class. Laptop computers are not to be open during lecture, not even to take notes. Cell phones are to be put away. If you are texting or talking on the phone during class you will be asked to leave (resulting in an unexcused absence). Attendance: Attendance is mandatory throughout the term. Evidence of in class work and continued progress will be considered upon grading. A university approved absence excuse is required for an absence to be excused. Properly authorized excuses from the University Health Clinic are valid only for the date of the excuse. If the medical staff believed the student needs more than one day to recover it will be specified on the excuse. If the student has seen an off campus physician, a written note indicating the specific days the student is unable to attend class is expected, in addition to a note stating the time and date of the doctor s visit. The student is expected to provide the instructor with the properly authorized excuse on the day the student returns to class. Late excuses will not be accepted. 2

3 If the student is tardy or absent from a class or has received permission to leave early, it is his/her responsibility to obtain the material that was covered from another student. Consider skipping class as the equivalent of not showing up to work. Unexcused absences will result in a reduction of the final course grade, as follows: 1 2 unexcused absences not penalized 3 unexcused absences, 2% 4 unexcused absences, 3% 5 unexcused absences, 4%, etc. If you arrive to class late or leave early, without proper authorization and documentation, your grade will also be reduced. Two (2) occurrences result in grade reduction equal to one (1) absence. The responsibility of keeping up with unexcused absences lies with the student. The instructor is not responsible for informing the student if tardiness, absences, or early departures are recorded. Late Work: Work will be at the beginning of lecture on the due date given in whatever stage of completion has been attained to receive credit. Those students who miss any due date or assignment with an unexcused absence will not be able to make up the work and will receive a failing grade on that project or assignment. Under extenuating circumstances (such as those listed on the University Policies website), accompanied with a university approved absence excuse, late work may be accepted and will be decided on a case by case basis where the student notifies the instructor prior to missing the due date. Special Accommodations Any student needing special accommodations should contact Dr. Kelly Haynes, Director of the Program for Students with Disabilities, located in 1244 Haley Center: ; voice or T.T. All students with special accommodations are responsible for making an appointment with the instructor to discuss the accommodation memo as soon as possible. If scheduled office hours conflict with classes, please arrange an alternate appointment time.
