5 School of Liberal Arts 485 Compulsory Courses COURSE DESCRIPTIONS LNG 501 Linguistic Description in ELT 3 ( 3-0 ) This course is to identify the main features of the language descriptions which have and can be applied to ELT, and to critically evaluate their strengths and weaknesses with respect to ELT teaching materials and methods. In general, a historical perspective is adopted, in order to clarify the reasons for the development of major trends. Topics studied are the following: the relationship between language descriptions and language teaching; traditional (or classical ) grammar; structuralism, transformational generative grammar; socio-linguistic views of language: language variation, register analysis, language notions, language functions; and discourse-based language descriptions. Also, where appropriate, the historical relationship between language descriptions and theories of learning will be sketched. LNG 511 Principles of Teaching 3 ( 2-2 ) This course aims to provide participants with an understanding of the principles which underlie good teaching practice, including principles of education, teacher performance, teacher talk and classroom management. In doing this, the course aims to help participants to develop a critical approach to teaching in order to enable long-term development. LNG 512 Teaching the Written Language 3 ( 2-2 ) This course aims to help participants learn how to teach written uses of English as effectively as possible. Focusing on the teaching of reading and writing skills, the course enables participants to understand how the principles of teaching can be put into practice to facilitate learning and to engender learner autonomy. LNG 513 Teaching the Spoken Language 3 ( 2 2 ) This course forms a continuation of LNG 511 and LNG 512, but the emphasis is on the teaching of spoken English, both for speaking and listening. The course aims to help participants to learn how to teach the spoken forms of English effectively, and to understand how the principles of teaching and of promoting independence can be put into practice in the teaching of spoken English. LNG 521 Language Learning and ELT 3 ( 3 0 ) The purpose of this course is to identify the main features of theories, research and experimentation in psycholinguistics and educational psychology in language teaching, and to critically evaluate their application in ELT materials and teaching methods. The following topics are covered: various theories of learning e.g. behaviorism, affective, cognitive, socialinteractionism and social-constructivism; the nature of memory and comprehension; motivation; language learning vs language acquisition; and language learning strategies. LNG 581 Research Methods 3 ( 3 0 ) This course provides a general background to research techniques and an introduction to the principles of action research. It will prepare participants to carry out their own research projects in EST by providing an understanding of the concepts and practical skills involved in the research process. Topics covered include: approaches to educational research; design and use of research instruments such as questionnaires, interviews, observation, surveys and case studies; evaluating and trialing; basic statistics; and writing a research report. LNG 631 Testing and Evaluation 3 ( 3 0 ) This course aims to give the participants a thorough introduction to testing and evaluation techniques relevant to ELT classroom and course design activities. The course focuses particularly on the educational uses of testing and evaluation, and their use in increasing learner motivation and understanding. Topics covered include: formative and summative testing; test item types and item writing; testing the language skills; test administration; scoring and assessing; interpreting test results; washback and feedback; test design; test trialing, evaluation and revision; and course evaluation.
6 486 School of Liberal Arts LNG 614 Teaching Techniques in Practice 3 ( 3 15 ) This course is an in-depth study of the application of ELT teaching methods by means of an extended period of closely-supervised teaching. The focus in LNG 511, LNG 512 and LNG 513 has been on the principles of teaching and their application in peer and micro-teaching. While this arrangement has its advantages, it is equally necessary to supplement and build on this experience with a teaching opportunity that provides the teacher with a more realistic context in which to develop his or her teaching, and creates opportunities for mastering additional skills. Optional Courses LNG 615 Drama for the Language Classroom 3 ( 2-2 ) This practical course aims to develop the confidence, spontaneity and interactive skills of the teacher, and to provide experience in action methods in the classroom. The approach is through practical participatory workshops, reflection and discussion, with the participants gradually becoming responsible for organizing and leading activities. The skills and uses of improvisation, role play, simulation, mime and games are explored while, at a theoretical level, the relationship between dramatic activity and language development will be studied. LNG 616 Human Communication Theory and Processes for Language Teachers 3 ( 3-0 ) This course applies current theories of human communication to help teachers better understand and more effectively negotiate the social networks in the classroom. Specifically, it aims to lead the participants to become more aware of their own communication styles and their impact on others, to be more flexible in the range of communication styles used, and to be more sensitive readers of their students and professional colleagues. LNG 617 Individualisation in Language Learning 3 ( 3-0 ) This course focuses on the theoretical basis of individualization as a teaching / learning approach. The course includes: individualization in the normal classroom setting: strategies and activities; learner training (i.e. facilitating learning how to learn); self-access work: integration with the main teaching program; establishing and running a self-access center; design of self-access materials; and evaluation of self-access systems. LNG 642 Language and Study Skills 3 ( 0-6 ) This course aims to provide the skills, knowledge and experience in language and study skills necessary for succeeding at the graduate level. It covers advanced listening, reading and writing skills, paying particular attention to academic genres such as presenting arguments and leading a discussion. Moreover, the course focuses on the cognitive skills necessary for effective performance in both academic and pedagogic environments. LNG 651 Technology in Language Teaching 3 ( 3-0 ) This course combines theory and practice in discussing the use of technology for language teaching and learning. It reviews the potential of audio, Video and computer technologies, and their accompanying materials for language learning. The course requires participants to experience using, evaluating and producing technology based learning materials. LNG 657 The Establishment and Management of 3 ( 2-2 ) English Language Learning Resource Centre This course aims at equipping the learners with hands-on experience of how to set up and run a self-access centre (SAC). The learners will consider essential aspects of the SAC, e.g. layout, budget, material presentation, classification and index system, and support system such as a helper. The learners will investigate thoroughly role of helper, consultation and they will have the chance to work with real learners assuming that role. They will analyses selective examples of SAC against the KMUTT model and consider the possibility of utilizing the SAC. LNG 661 Course and Materials Design 3 ( 2-2 ) This course aims to introduce participants to the factors involved in designing ESL courses and course materials. Topics covered include: linguistic, psychological and socio-educational variables essential to course design; needs analysis; types of course designs, including
7 School of Liberal Arts 487 language-centered, skill-centered and learning-centered designs; syllabus design; the relationship between materials evaluation, materials adaptation and materials writing; techniques for materials adaptation; and techniques for materials design. LNG 677 Management in ELT 3 ( 2-2 ) This course focuses on the management roles in language teaching projects. The course covers: theories of change; planning, implementing and evaluating change; principles and practice of personnel management; time management; resource management; and communication of project information. LNG 678 Teacher Training and Development 3 ( 3-0 ) This course stresses the difference between training and development, and aims to give participants an introduction to the following areas of teacher training and development: the knowledge and skills of the teacher trainer / developer; the design and handling of teacher training / development activities; teaching observation and feedback skills; organising a staff development programme; planning a workshop; and designing a short course. LNG 682 Self-Assessment in Resource Based Learning 3 ( 2-2 ) This course focuses on integrating self access learning and is intended to complement the Materials Design for RBL. It begins with some theoretical background and justification for selfassessment. After an introduction to varieties of self-assessment, participants will be able to survey a range of self-assessment instruments and learn to select the ones most appropriate for particular purposes. They will be given practical work on creating self- assessment and on training learners to use self- assessment. LNG 698 The Classroom-Based Research Study 6 ( 0 30 ) In this component, participants undertake an independent, problem-solving study of classroom teaching, similar to the thesis in type, but not in scale, and involving the following main stages: a) identification of a teaching / learning problem b) design of a trial solution c) implementation of the solution d) evaluation of the result e) consideration of lines for further development. The problem under focus would present itself as a result of research undertaken by the participant into the effectiveness of his/her teaching in LNG 614 Teaching Techniques in Practice. The design of the attempted solution involves the participant in consulting a range of relevant readings. LNG 699 Thesis 12 ( 0 60 ) Participants are required to design and undertake an action research project, following a conventional research format, under the supervision of the thesis committee. As a rule, the topics of the thesis offered will be of direct relevance to ELT work in Thailand.
