Church membership is the commitment of the believer to be dynamically involved with a local body of Christians. When a person becomes a member of he local church, he or she is responsible for pursuing godliness through the application of the Scriptures in daily living. Each member is expected to serve in one ministry area of the church to further the ministry.
Lesson I: Church Membership A.The Meaning of Church Membership Church membership is the commitment of the believer to be dynamically involved with a local body of Christians who have placed themselves under the authority of Jesus Christ and the leadership of the local church. B. The Nature of Church Membership Church membership is a divinely established, legally binding relationship between God and His people whereby they agree to function in harmony with other believers under His designated structure of authority in accordance with the revealed guidelines of scripture resulting in long-term consequences over time. This relationship is called a covenant. C.The Goal of Church Membership It is God s expressed desire that each member of His Church become a disciple of Jesus Christ. Discipleship is that process whereby a Christian progressively learns to bring every area of his or her life under the Lordship of Jesus Christ (Matthew 28:19-20; I Corinthians 10:31; Matthew 10:24-39). D.The Philosophy of Church Membership The Church has been established to be a spiritual community, which models the kingdom of God on earth. As such, it is the role of the Church and its members to provide a divine alternative of God s activity in the world without, at the same time, becoming a part of the world (John 17:4-19). E The Vision of Church Membership Since it is the role of the Church to be God s alternative in society, then it is the vision of this church to develop a comprehensive program of outreach, not only in the church, but also in the community.this outreach should extend into every social sphere, whether it be education, economic, politics, etc., so that the sovereignty and supremacy of Christ is demonstrated through the impact of each member of His body, the Church (Ephesians 2:19-23; Colossians 1:14-19 F The Accountability of Church Membership When a person becomes a member of he local church, he or she is responsible for pursuing godliness through the application of the Scriptures in daily living.it is the responsibility of the church to assist the believer in achieving this goal as well as holding he member accountable through the process of church discipline when the member refuses to submit oneself to biblical authority (Matthew 18: Corinthians 5:1-13: 6:1-8; 2 Thessalonians 3:14-15). The willingness to be accountable is reflected in the two ordinances Christ left for the members of His church to observe: Baptism This ordinance symbolizes a believer s public identification with the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ an in so doing pledges to live under His authority in he context of
the local church (Romans 6:1-11). Communion-- This ordinance symbolizes the ongoing renewal of the Christian s commitment to Jesus Christ. It reflects one s continuous ledge of faithfulness through confession of sin and renewed dependency on God grace (1 Corinthians 11:20-34). G The Experience of Church Membership Worship -- In worship, our goal will be to influence those who enter into our fellowship to make the exaltation of God in their lives and the submitting to his authority the supreme purpose of their lives.this is to be demonstrated by their faithful participation in the corporate Sunday gathering of the church and regular participation in communion (Acts 2:42). Education -- Each member is to grow in biblical literacy and its application in their lives.participation in the Wednesday night Bible Study, Sunday School or other approved seminars or courses is expected (Acts 2:42). Outreach-- Each member is expected to serve in one ministry area of the church to further the ministry of Beacon Hill Church both internally to our membership for the building up of this local body, and externally to the world for the salvation of souls and the betterment of society (Acts 2:41-47). Fellowship -- To provide a system of accountability and intimate fellowship at our growing church, each member is assigned to a care group. The care group leaders are expected to hold those under their care lovingly responsible for their Christian lifestyle as well as to provide a context for mutual support and encouragement (Acts 2:42-47). H.The Expectation of Church Membership A member can expect to receive the following: the faithful teaching and preaching of God s Word so that the member can grow. a program assigned to minister to the unique needs of all members of the family (children, youth and adults). a leadership team (an ministers or elder and deacon) who will maintain regular contact with the member so that the church is kept abreast of your needs, prayer requests praises and church attendance. a dynamic context of fellowship and the building of quality Christian relationships. I. The Responsibilities of Church Membership All members are to fulfill three areas of responsibility Growth-- This is your responsibility to regularly and obediently exposes oneself to the Word of God so that the Spirit of God can produce the process of spiritual maturity in one s life (1 Peter 2:2). Service -- This is the responsibility to use ones abilities and time to serve the broader body of Christians in the church. This is accomplished through the selection and faithful participation in one area of church ministry (1 Corinthians 12:12-27).
Giving -- This is the responsibility to share ones resources with the Lord and His church for the furthering of the ministry of the church. This is accomplished through the giving of minimum of ten percent, from the total of ones earnings, to the church (1 Corinthians 16:1-2) II. The Universal Church A. What is the universal church? 1.When someone asks you, what is the church? -- what comes to your mind? 2In the Scriptures, the word church is used to refer to whom? (Acts 2:41-47) 3.What is the truth we must believe to become a part of the church?romans 10:9-10; Acts 4:10-12) 4Should there be any distinctions among church members based on race, language, culture, etc.? (Colossians 3:11) 5Who is the founder and head of the church? (Matthew 16:16-18) 6What was the Rock on which the church was founded -- Peter? or the confession of Jesus Christ as God? (compare Matthew 16:18 with Romans 10:9-10) 7When did the building of the church begin? (Acts 1:8, 2:1-47; 1 Corinthians 12:13) 8How will the church s present existences on earth end? (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17) 9.Summarize your answers to the previous questions and answer the question -- What is the church? 10.Based on the above definition, are you a member of the true church? Yes No. (Refer to the Romans Road Explanation of the Gospel) B.Biblical illustrations of the universal church
What important ideas does each of these seven illustrations teach us about the quality of Christ s relationship to His church? 1.The Shepherd and His Sheep (John 10:1-8). 2.The Vine and the Branches (John 15:1-15). 3. The Chief Cornerstone and the Living Stones (Ephesians 2:19-22). 4.High Priests and Kingdom of Priests (1 Peter 2:5-10). The three sacrifices, which we should now offer, are: Romans 12:1 Hebrews 13:15 Philippians 4:18 5.The Head and the Body (Ephesians 4:11-16). 6The First Born and the Family of God (Romans 8:16-17, 29, 30). 7.Bridegroom and Bride (Ephesians 5:25-27). Summary:The member, in the family of God, has many precious promises for this life and for the life to come.god gives us the benefits of family membership to enjoy and share. C.What is the mission of the universal church? 1.Why has God blessed believers with every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3-6)? 2.What must the church do to accomplish its central purpose (Matthew 28:19-20)?
3 How many nations does Jesus want disciple (Matthew 28:19)? D.Joining the universal church Personally experiencing the power of the Gospel by accepting Jesus Christ as your Savior is the only way to truly join God s universal church.the Romans Road (key scripture verses from the book of Romans) provide the following truths: Romans Road Explanation of the Gospel Verse Objective Doctrinal Emphasis Romans 3:23 all have sinned... and come short of the glory of God... Understanding of personal sin This verse says all. All means me and also you.everyone who ever lived is guilty of sin except Jesus. Romans 5:12 as through one man, sin entered into the world... and death through sin, so death spread to all men. Understanding the penalty of personal sin Sin originated with Adam. When he sinned, he infected the entire earth with sin because he wanted to be like God.When Adam sinned, he turned his back on God, who is the source of all good things including life. therefore, he cut himself off from life and died -- first, spiritually and 1000 years later, physically.physical death is defined as separation from God. Romans 5:6 But, God demonstrated His love toward us in that while we were yet sinners... Christ died for us Understanding the love of God and substitute death of Christ. God has a problem -- as the just Judge of the universe, He could not let even one sin go unpunished, or else He would not be just.yet, He loves us so much that He did not want us to perish. Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death but the free gift is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord Understanding that Grace is free; salvation is a gift for receiving. Wage means that which we deserve. Free gift means that which we do not deserve. Nothing we could do would gain eternal life.it is a gift of God through Jesus. All we can do is
accept it. Romans 10:9-10 confess with your mouth.. elieve with your heart...resulting in salvation Understanding faith and putting faith in Christ alone. Believing with the heart is the foundation for salvation, but biblical faith always results in heart action. If a one is not willing to depend upon Christ alone for salvation, knowing that He did for him is enough, he lacks biblical faith. Summary:The Prayer of Faith If you have not already prayed the prayer of faith, or wish to reaffirm that faith now, pray: Lord, thank you for sending Jesus to die in my place for my sins. I now accept [or affirm] Jesus Christ as my savior and Lord. Cleanse me from sin and give me His righteousness that my life might please you.in the name of Jesus Christ, I pray.amen III.The Local Church In the New Testament, the term church is used in two ways:(1) the universal church and (2) the local church A.Biblical proof of the description of church 1.Place the following scripture references with the correct church description: Ephesians 5:23 1 Corinthians 16:19 Acts 13:1 1 Corinthians 12:13, Colossians 4:15 Matthew 16; 18 Matthew 18:17 Romans 16:3-5 Universal Church Local Church
2. What spiritual characteristics should local churches be demonstrating through its mature members (1 Corinthians 13:13)? B. Organization of the local church 1.Why did Christ give pastors and other gifted individuals to lead the church (Ephesians 4:11-12)? 2. Why should every believer be a part of and regularly attend a local church (Hebrews 10:24-25)? 3.Why should you obey your church leaders in what you know are right (Hebrews 13:7-17)? 4.The men officially responsible for spiritual oversight of the church are called (Acts 20:27-28). 5.The men who assist the elders are officials serving the church in physical areas are called (1 Timothy 3:8-13). 6.How should we react to those who oppose and falsify the teaching of the Bible (2 Timothy 2:14-16; 23-26)?
