3 1. INTRODUCTION MEGATON & ULTI TORQ DRILLING JAR Megaton & Ulti-Torq Drilling Jar & Energizer are a new generation of drilling tools designed and manufactured for the severe drilling operations of today such as high torque, directional and horizontal drilling requiring secure & durable operation and providing high impact as and when required regardless if in vertical, high angle or horizontal section of the well. The Megaton tools feature Ulti-Torq double shoulder high torque transmitting body connections throughout the tools, high strength steel, no chrome exposure internal or external to drilling fluids or bore hole, high temperature low friction seals that also are resistant to chemical attack installed as standard. Large internal diameter for high volume fluid passage have been achieved without loss of tool strength and the two stage energizer will ensure that high impact is achieved even in horizontal sections of the well. In a drill string with use of an energizer, the energizer will automatically be applied when opening the jar. So fully concentrate on the loads applied on the jar, and the energizer will adjust as required. The energizer will, when operated with the Megaton or Ulti-Torq jar, increase acceleration of hammer weight between jar and energizer and thereby increase impacts. The impacts will also due to the two-stage design increase impacts in horizontal wells. This double acting energizer will also minimize jarring shock loads on working string and topside equipment. More information enclosed in Part II Operation Manual for Megaton & Ulti-Torq Energizer. 2. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MEGATON AND ULTI TORQ JAR The main difference between the Megaton and Ulti-Torq jars is the ID and Pump Open Area. This applies to the 6 ½ & 8 jars. Note: When running a 6 1/2 or 8 jar, the customer must verify what kind of jar is run in hole due to the difference in pump open area which applies when activating the Megaton and Ulti-Torq Drilling Jar. The Jar lock load will have to be exceeded for lock to release and hydraulics to be engaged. A. Megaton Drilling jar marked OWS-MHJ-xxxx B. Ulti-Torq Drilling jar marked OWS-UTJ-xxxx If circulation is maintained while jarring, the pressure drop across the bit creates a force tending to extend the jar. The pump open force must be considered in the calculations since it reduces the force required to jar up and increases the force required to jar down. The pump open force is calculated by multiplying the pressure drop across the bit by the pump open area. The Megaton and Ulti-Torq Drilling jar is operated the same, but as shown in the tables below there are difference in Bore ID and Pump Open Area due to the valve-design used to activate the jar. It is important that operator knows what type of jar is run in hole to get the right calculations done to activate the jars. This is further explained and shown with example in section: 6.3 of this manual. Docs#: v/5 Approved 15/07-10 Page 3 of 18

Meaning that Balance piston OD is the POA for a Megaton Jar. The Ulti-Torq Jar has moving valves, so the wash pipe OD is the POA for an Ulti-Torq Jar. This design requires the tool to be ported to annulus to balance the tool during operation. 3. DESCRIPTION A drilling jar installed in the drilling string is immediately available to apply jarring action and release the stuck portion of the drilling string. The MEGATON & Ulti-Torq Drilling Jar is designed for use during drilling operations to apply an intensified force either up or down against a stuck portion of the drilling string. The force or over pull required to free a stuck drill string must be applied in addition to the load already supported by the drilling rig and the drill pipe. This combination force often exceeds the safe tensile strength of the drill pipe, and sometimes the hoisting capacity of the drilling rig. This usually results in a costly and time consuming fishing operation. Docs#: v/5 Approved 15/07-10 Page 4 of 18
5 The MEGATON & Ulti-torq Drilling Jar was developed to incorporate the features of both hydraulic and mechanical drilling jars. Its unique design combines both hydraulic time delay release and a mechanical lock mechanism, in one relatively short, double acting drilling Jar. This tool provided several distinct advantages over conventional hydraulic or mechanical drilling jars. Hydraulic time delay allows the operator to vary the over pull applied, and then apply the drawworks drum brake. The jarring force is therefore easily controlled and damage to the hoisting equipment is prevented. Mechanical lock mechanism prevents jar movement during normal drilling operations, eliminating unnecessary wear of internal components. Location in BHA is less restricted. Jar can be used in tension or compression within the limits of the lock setting. No safety collars or special handling procedures are required on the rig floor. Will not fire unexpectedly when drilling or tripping in or out of the hole. The lock mechanism re-sets automatically, locking the jar in the neutral position. Linear action lock mechanism is not affected by torque. Double acting, jarring action in both up and down directions. To jar up, tension is applied to the jar stretching the drill string. When the jar releases, the energy stored in the stretched drill string accelerates the jar mandrel rapidly to its fully extended position. The sudden stop of the jar mandrel converts the kinetic energy of the moving mass of the drill collars into and intense impact or jarring force. This impact force will vary depending on the actual operating conditions, but can reach eight times the initial over pull. The jar down, weight is slacked off until the force applied to the jar exceeds the mechanical down lock setting. The lock will then release, allowing the drill string to drop free. When the jar reaches its fully closed position, an intense impact force is applied to the stuck portion of the drilling string. 4. OPERATION The MEGATON & Ulti-Torq Drilling Jar must be installed in the drill string with the mandrel end up. Prior to make up a suitable thread compound meeting A.P.I Spec. 7, Appendix F should be applied to the end connection. The up and down lock release are marked on the jar before shipment. These settings should be recorded before the tool is run into the hole. Note; If weight below jar and energizer is greater than lock setting of the jar, the lock may release to activate jar hydraulics when string is picked up. Verify the weight below the jar according to table below: Tool Size 4 3/4 6 1/2 8 9 ½ Megaton & Ulti-Torq: Series 47 Series 66 Series 81 Series 95 Lock Setting Up Lock setting down lbf 133,5 178 kn lbf 44,5 89 kn lbf kn lbf kn lbf kn lbf 133,5-222 kn Docs#: v/5 Approved 15/07-10 Page 5 of lbf kn lbf kn
6 Protect the mandrel sealing surface from possible damage during handling or storage. Never apply tongs, slips, chains or slings to this area. Rig tongs should be applied immediately adjacent to the top and bottom connections to avoid breaking or torquing the jar body connections. All body connections are torqued to specification at the service centre. Avoid breaking these connections at the rig. The MEGATON & Ulti-Torq Drilling Jar is operated by a simple up and down motion of the drill string. The intensity of the up-jarring force is directly proportional to applied tension. In the up-jarring mode, as the applied tension exceeds the lock setting, the mechanical lock releases and the hydraulic delay sequence begins. After a brief time delay, the jar mandrel is suddenly released and accelerates to the fully extended position. In the down-jarring mode as the compression force applied to the jar exceeds the down-lock setting, the mechanical lock releases immediately allowing the jar mandrel to move freely to the fully closed position. 5. PLACEMENT The Megaton and Ulti-Torq jar can be placed in the bottom hole assembly either in tension or compression but it is recommended that the jar is placed as close to any possible stuck point in order to achieve the highest impact where it counts. Ensure that sufficient weight (hammer weight) is placed above the jar for high impact. Determining the ideal jar position in the bottom hole assembly, is a complex issue, where several factors must be considered. Some of these factors are: Anticipating type of sticking; differential or mechanical. Stuck pipe mechanics: Wellbore stability Differential sticking Key seating Junk Green cement Collapsed casing Plenty of other possibilities Hole condition, trajectory and inclination. Configuration of bottom hole assembly Pump pressure and mud weight Buoyancy factor of the drilling fluid. Planned range of weight on bit. Overpull availability. Friction factors in open and cased hole Pump open forces Safe working strength of the drill pipe Lock setting on the jar. Docs#: v/5 Approved 15/07-10 Page 6 of 18
7 5.1. GENERAL GUIDELINES Although each situation and combination of factors is unique, there are some general guidelines that can be used to select the location of the jar & energizer: In zones where differential sticking is anticipated, locate the jar relatively high in the BHA, to minimize the chance of becoming stuck above the jar. Where mechanical sticking is more common, the jar may be located lower in the BHA, for increase jarring efficiency. Axial forces acting on the Megaton & Ulti-Torq Drilling Jar while drilling should not exceed 50% of the lock settings. This will provide an adequate safety factor for normal load variations. For maximum jarring efficiency, the jar should be located as close as possible above the anticipated stuck point, but at least two drill collar lengths above the top stabilizer. This usually locates the jar below the neutral point in the bottom hole assembly and therefore places the jar in compression. A sufficient number of drill collars and / or heavy weight drill pipe should be run above the jar, to provide the necessary mass to jar down. To avoid becoming stuck above the jar the drill string above must not exceed the jar diameter. Avoid locating the jar at a cross over between BHA components of different diameters such as drill collars and heavy weight drill pipe. The jar should be placed a minimum of two joints above or below a crossover. Although the drilling jar should be placed as close as possible above the anticipated stuck point, the jar should never be placed immediately above the top stabilizer. The energizer should be placed above the jar hammer weight and with sufficient weight above the energizer in order to ensure high down jar impact. Never place jar or energizer at the neutral point in string as it may cause excessive wear and/or damage to the tools. Never place tools at a transition point (i.e. Between 8 OD and 6 ½ OD collars. Never place jar next to or below a stabilizer, roller reamer or similar tool. Whipping of the drill collars could create sever bending stresses on the jar if placed at this location. A minimum of two drill collar lengths should be placed between the jar and top stabilizer to: Minimize bending stresses in jar. Minimize the risk of becoming stuck above the jar in sloughing formations Provide a clear target for string shot if required. Docs#: v/5 Approved 15/07-10 Page 7 of 18

On request, these settings can be changed for special applications. To prevent the jar from releasing accidentally, the total force acting on the jar must be less than the lock settings During operation the Jar lock load will have to be exceeded for lock to release and hydraulics to be engaged. 6.3 PUMP OPEN FORCE Pump pressure will generate a force, which will try to open the tool and thereby increase ease of opening jar lock and increase impact. If circulation is maintained while jarring, the pressure drop across the bit creates a force tending to extend the jar. The pump open force must be considered in the following calculations since it reduces the force required to jar up and increases the force required to jar down. The pump open force is calculated by multiplying the pressure drop across the bit by the pump open area. Note: As stated in section 2 of this manual, there is different Pump Open Area for Megaton and Ulti-Torq Jar, applies to the 6 1/2 & 8 jars. Docs#: v/5 Approved 15/07-10 Page 8 of 18

This means that the Balance piston OD is the POA for a Megaton Jar. The POA against the lower balance piston is square inch for a 6 1/2 Jar. The Ulti-torq Jar has moving valves, so the wash pipe OD is the POA for an Ulti-Torq Jar. This design requires the tool to be ported to annulus to balance the tool during operation. The POA against the wash pipe OD is 9.97 square inch for a 6 1/2 Jar. See tables below for POA for other jar sizes. 10 6.5 FREE STRING WEIGHT The free string weight is the weight of string above the jar. To determine the free string weight subtracts the weight below the jar from the total string weight. 6.6 JARRING UP To jar up apply overpull at the jar as required and wait for jar to fire, lock will automatically release when lock setting load is exceeded. The more overpull applied on the jar, the greater impact will be achieved. The force applied to the following to the above free string weight, must be greater than the up latch setting, but less than the recommended maximum load during hydraulic delay. To determine the overpull above the free string weight, subtract the pump open force from the up latch setting. To repeat jarring, reset jar into locked position by applying weight on the jar which then automatically will return to its locked position and again be ready to be fired up or down as required. Jar lock load will have to be exceeded for the lock to release and hydraulics to be engaged. Overpull in excess of Max pre-jarring should not be applied as it may damage the hydraulics of the jar. EXAMPLE: 6 1/2 Jar with 1,000 PSI Bit Pressure Drop Jarring Up: Megaton Jar Ulti-Torq Jar Imperial Units Imperial Units Up Lock Setting 70,000 lbf 70,000 lbf Maximum Load During Hydraulic Delay 190,000 lbf 190,000 lbf Pump Open Force 19,640 lbf 9,970 lbf Minimum Overpull Required 70,000 19,640 = 50,360 lbf Maximum Recommended Overpull 190,000 19,640 = 170,360 lbf 70,000 9,970 = 60,030 lbf 190,000 9,970 = 180,030 lbf To jar upward, apply the calculated overpull and set the draw-works brake. The mechanical latch will release and the delay sequence will begin. After the time delay of approximately 30 seconds, the jar will fire. Lower the drill string until the weight indicator reads less than the free string weight indicating that the latch has re-engaged. The jar is ready for another jarring cycle or to resume normal drilling operations. Docs#: v/5 Approved 15/07-10 Page 10 of 18
11 6.7 JARRING DOWN To jar down, apply weight on the jar as required and wait for jar to fire, the lock will automatically release when lock setting load is exceeded. The more weight applied on the jar, the greater impact will be achieved. To determine the slack off required from the free string weight add the pump open force to the down latch setting. To repeat jarring, reset jar into locked position by applying overpull at the jar which then automatically will return to its locked position and again be ready to be fired up or down as required. Jar lock load will have to be exceeded for lock to release and hydraulics to be engaged. EXAMPLE: 6 1/2 Jar with 1,000 PSI Bit Pressure Drop Jar: Megaton Jar Ulti-Torq Jar Imperial Units Imperial Units Down Lock Setting 29,000 lbf 29,000 lbf Pump Open Force 19,640 lbf 9,970 lbf Slack off from the free string weight 29, ,640 = 29, ,970 = 48,640 lbf 38,970 lbf To jar downward lower the drilling string until the calculated weight is slacked off, at which point the mechanical latch is released. To re-latch the jar raise the drilling string until the weight indicator shows an increase above free string weight. This indicates the latch has re-engaged and that the jar is ready for another jarring cycle. 7 INSPECTION On each round trip the jar should be visually inspected for any indication of damage, excessive wear or leakage. When the jar is first removed from the hole a small quantity of drilling fluid may be noticed draining from the balancing ports. This condition is normal and does not indicate a problem. 8 MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE New tools are shipped painted. The threaded ends are treated with iron-phosphate and coated with rust preventative coating. Heavy duty thread protectors are installed to eliminate mechanical damage. When the jar is to be laid down the following should be done: 1. Flush all drilling fluid from the bore and from the balancing chamber with fresh water. 2. Wash external surfaces of the tool 3. Apply thread compound and protectors to the end connections. Tools stored horizontally should be rotated to a new position occasionally to prevent seals from setting and resultant fluid leakage. 14 Megaton & Ulti-Torq Energizers 1. INTRODUCTION In a drill string without an Energizer, the impact of a jar is dependent on pipe stretch (overpull) and the ability of the drillpipe to contract when the jar is released. Impact is simply mass multiplied with speed. In practical terms, the friction of the drillpipe reduces impact on the stuck part of the string. In an inclined or horizontal wellbore, the friction can be severe. Due to the different ID of Megaton and Ulti-Torq Energizer, customer should verify what kind of energizer is run in hole. C. Megaton Drilling Energizer marked OWS-MHE-xxxx D. 15 Megaton & Ulti-Torq Energizers 3 DESCRIPTION The ULTI-TORQ Drilling Energizer is a two way tool that stores pipe stretch for use when jarring both up and down. The energy is stored in a number of steel disc springs that are compressed when used. The stored energy is either tensional (jarring up) or compressive (jarring down). The Energizer isolates/concentrates the hammer mass that the jar requires for impact. When using an Energizer, the hammer mass is defined as the string between the jar and the Energizer. When overpull is applied, the Energizer is stretched and energy stored. When the jar fires, the stored energy is released and improves the impact of the Jar. The only friction that reduces the impact, is the friction of the hammer mass, which is very small compared to that of the whole drill string. As the Energizer isolates / concentrates the hammer mass, it becomes increasingly important to use in shallow sections of the well. In shallow sections, especially with large diameter drillpipe, the total pipe stretch can be so small that when the jar is fired, the missing pipe stretch seriously reduces impact. The Energizer completely removes this problem as the pipe stretch is stored in the tool. A further benefit in shallow sections is that the impact does not travel up the string and shakes the Top drive and Derrick. 4 FEATURES All ULTI-TORQ Energizers are two way (double acting) and two stage. The double acting feature assures that the energy pipe stretch is working both up and down. The two stage functionality means that there are two sets of springs that store energy: The first set is soft allowing a lot of stretch to be stored with a relatively small overpull. The second set is harder allowing a larger overpull. Both sets have built in stops that prevents the springs from being flattened and breaking. Put together, the Energizer can deliver a larger impact with a small overpull compared to other tools. 5 OPERATION The ULTI-TORQ Energizer spring rate is set prior to delivery of tool to customer and is optimized for the Jar and placement. No further thought is required with regards operation of the Energizer as it will function automatically when activating the Jar. Docs#: v/1 Approved 12/01-10 Page 15 of 18
16 Megaton & Ulti-Torq Energizers Below is a chart indicating approximate stroke vs. load for ULTI-TORQ Energizers. 6 PLACEMENT The placement of the Energizer is connected to the placement of the Jar. If the Jar and Energizer is too far apart, the mass between them becomes so large that speed of the Jar when fired is slowed and impact reduced. If the space is too short, hammer mass is reduced and again impact suffers. Placing either 6 ea HWDP or 3 ea DC s between the Jar and Energizer is considered good drilling practice. The energizer should be placed above the jar hammer weight and with sufficient weight above the energizer in order to ensure high down jar impact. As the Jar, the Energizer can run both in tension and compression, although running in compression in vertical wells is not considered good drilling practice (due to possible buckling problems). Note: The Energizer is often the highest placed BHA component that is telescopic, i.e. one tube inside another with a resulting thin wall. All the drilling torque from the bit and rotary torque from the rest of the BHA will go through the Energizer. Never place jar or energizer at the neutral point in string as it may cause excessive wear and/or damage to the tools. 6.1 Jar Placement Analyze Odfjell Well Services offer through Global Rentals a Jar / Energizer Placement modeling software package, Ulti Trac, which models the behavior of the jar and accelerator and their placement in the BHA. Ulti Trac: Is modeling software that calculates all the parameters for each section of the BHA and drill pipe. Calculates impacts for the top of the BHA, at the Jar and at the bit. It also calculates the accumulated weights and buckling weights (if tool joint OD s are known). It s a database package (ODBS level II) where all the results are stored for later statistics as opposed to spreadsheet solutions. Se example of a jar analyze on the next page.
