1 School of Languages, Cultures and Societies Joint Honours Spanish Spanish is taught within a department that has an outstanding reputation for training linguistic excellence. We have particularly high standards in oral proficiency, with many native speakers amongst our staff. Leeds students also benefit from access to the facilities at the Instituto Cervantes, the Spanish government s language and cultural institute which is based on campus. The School of Languages, Cultures and Societies is the largest and most diverse of its kind in the UK, with state-of-the-art facilities and a wider range of programmes than at any university in the country. Each year students take credits (the exact amount depends on your Joint Honours combination). Shaded modules in a blue box are core, compulsory modules. Please note that module availability is subject to change. Level 1 Modules Practical Language Skills in Spanish 1 (20 credits) hone skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening to Spanish develop fluent and accurate expression in both Spanish and English Joint Honours Cornerstone Module (20 credits) explore the ways in which your two degree subjects complement one another. broaden your perspective by exploring questions relevant to your subjects in a range of international contexts. Select one of the following 20 credit modules: The Historical Development of Spain and Hispanic America Introduction to the Cultural Production of Spain and Spanish-America In level 1, you study between 40 and 60 credits in each Joint Honours subject, one 20 credit Cornerstone Module and (if your timetable allows) 20 credits of Discovery modules in either a third subject or one of your two named Joint Honours subjects.
2 Level 2 Modules Practical Language Skills in Spanish 2 (20 credits) a practical, linguistically-orientated preparation for residence abroad complete language learning activities and reflect upon personal language development Select at least one of the following 20 credit modules: Modern American Spanish Literature Latin America since Independence (c1800 c1930) Translation Theory and Practice in a Spanish<>English Context Catalan Language II The Spanish regional Melting Pot: the old same History? Issues in Hispanic and Lusophone Cinema Modern Spain ( ) Spanish Literature and Theatre Linguists into Schools Students wishing to choose Linguists into Schools as one of their options must take a minimum of 60 credits in Spanish in level 2, including the core Practical Language Skills in Spanish 2 module. Spanish Year Abroad Express a preference for one of the following (please note that not all options are available in every country): Language Assistantship Scheme: Teaching English in a Spanish-speaking country. Work Placement: subject to departmental approval, you may spend this period overseas in paid employment. ERASMUS University Exchange: Studying on a University course alongside Spanish students. Locations include Barcelona and Madrid. Upon completion of the year abroad: make substantial linguistic progress, over a wide range of registers hold conversations with native speakers of the language acquire a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the host country
3 Level 3 Modules Final Year Project undertake an autonomous piece of research work (for example a dissertation, community-based project or portfolio) covering one or both of your joint honours subjects implications of the project for your overall level 3 module requirements will vary according to your joint honours programme exact arrangements will be confirmed nearer the time Practical Language Skills in Spanish 3 (20 credits) understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts and recognise implicit meaning appreciate the effect of tone, register, structure and style in oral and written communication Select at least one of the following 20 credit modules: Extended Essay Things Can Only Get Better: The Role of the Arts and Cultural Institutions in Spain s Transition to Democracy ( ) Spanish in an Economic and Business Context Contemporary Spain: From Franco to Zapatero ( ) The Crisis of the Spanish Nation? Nationalisms and National Identities in Spain, The Regulation of Sexuality in Iberia and Latin America Spanish-English Translation From Toussaint to Obama: Resistance in the African Diaspora Catalan III The Religious Question in Spain and Political Change ( ) Discovering Spanish Voices Abroad in a Digital World Over levels 2 and 3 together students must take: Spanish a minimum of 80 credits (at least 40 credits must be at level 3) Other subject a minimum of 80 credits (at least 40 credits must be at level 3) In each level (2 and 3) you must take a further 40 credits. You must also meet any credit requirements detailed on the programme structure listing for your specific Joint Honours course (see the Helping you section at the end of this document). If the requirements of your programme allow, you may take any remaining credits in either or both of your joint honours subjects, or in Discovery modules.
