1 Creating a Slideshow in PowerPoint 2013 You can use PowerPoint animations to cause images to appear, move, and disappear either on click or as part of a sequence of events. This allows you to focus on important points, control the flow of information, and add interest to your presentation. Using these options, you can also create a slideshow set to music. In this project, we will have three slides fade from one to another as music plays in the background. First, we will insert the image files, animate them so they fade slowly from one to the other, then add music in the background. Believe it or not, we can do all of this on one slide our images will be layered on top of one another. Important: The following steps need to be completed in the exact order if you want the slideshow to work correctly. If you view your slideshow and it does not work the way you expected, your best bet may be to start over. Creating a blank slide First, we will need to set up the overall layout design for our slide. From the Home tab, click on Layout and then select Title and Content. In the title box, type a title for your slideshow. Selecting the Title and Content layout Insert image from file 1. Click on the picture icon in the content area or Insert Picture. 2. Browse to the folder where your images are stored. 3. Select the image you would like to use. 4. Click Insert. 5. Click and drag on the handles to make your shape smaller or larger. 1

2 In the next steps, we will use Animation to make the image fade in and out on the slide. You can manage the order and timing of the animations using a separate window called the Animation Pane. Custom Animating the Image 1. Click on the Animations tab at the top of the screen. 2. Click on the Animation Pane button towards the right of the screen. This will let you view and modify any animations you have added to your slide. 3. Select the image on your slide by clicking on it. 4. Click on the Add Animation button at the top of the screen. 5. In the top section, under Entrance Effects, select Fade. 6. The fade effect now appears in the Animation Pane. It will be labeled with a 1, as it is the first animation that will occur. Adding an entrance effect 7. In the Animation Pane on the right of the screen, click on the drop down menu next to the name of the animation and select Timing. Changing the animation timing 8. Set the duration to Very Slow and click OK. 9. Click Play at the top of the Animation Pane to preview the animation. Now, we will add an exit effect to make it slowly fade away. 1. Make sure the picture is still selected. 2. Click on the Add Animation button at the top of the screen. 3. In the bottom section, under Exit Effects, select Fade. 4. In the Animation Pane on the right, click on the drop down menu next to the name of the animation and select Timing. 5. Under Start, select After Previous. This will make the fade out happen right after the fade in effect. 6. Set the duration to Very Slow and click OK. 7. Click Play at the top of the Animation Pane to preview the full animation. 2

3 Now, let s watch the entire slideshow. Click on Slide Show menu tab. This brings up the menu bar for setting up and starting a slideshow. Click on From Beginning. The picture fades in and out when we click. Now, we will add the second picture and animate it. Inserting an Image using the Insert Menu 1. Click on the Insert menu tab. 2. Click on the Picture. 3. Browse to the folder on your computer where your images are stored. 4. Select the image you would like to use. 5. Click Insert. 6. Click and drag on the handles to make your shape the same size as the first. The image should be placed right on top of the previous image. 7. Make sure your picture is still selected. 8. Click on the Animation tab, then click Add Animation. 9. Under Entrance Effects, select Fade. 10. In the Animation Pane, click on the drop down menu button next to the name of the animation and select Timing. 11. Under Start, select With Previous. 12. Change the speed to Very Slow. 13. Repeat these steps to add an Exit Effect (Fade). Under Timing, set the Start Trigger to After Previous. 14. Click Play at the top of the Animation pane to preview the full sequence. Follow these same steps to add a third picture. Notice that all the slides are layering one on top of the other, but they appear individually during the presentation, smoothly fading from one to the other. Adding Music 1. Click the Insert tab at the top of the screen. 2. Click on the Audio button and select Audio from File. (Be sure to click on the word Audio rather than the Audio icon.) A window will open, showing your file directories. Select the audio file you would like to add. 3. A sound element (a picture of a speaker) will now be inserted in your presentation. You can place this anywhere on your slide, or you can hide this image when you set your playback options. 4. To edit how your sound is played, click on the Playback tab at the top of the screen for the following options: Play: Preview the sound clip. Trim Audio: Edit the audio clip to trim any unnecessary portions. 3

4 Fade Duration: You can set the audio to fade in at the beginning (or out at the end) for a specified length of time. Volume: Set the volume for your audio playback. Start: Select how you would like the audio to begin on your click, automatically, or across all slides. (Select Automatically. ) Hide During Show: Hides the audio icon during your presentation. This is ideal if you plan on having the audio clip play automatically. Loop Until Stopped: Have audio clip repeat until you change slides or hit the Stop button. Rewind After Playing: Have audio clip rewind to the beginning once playback is complete. Note: The following audio formats are compatible with PowerPoint:.aiff,.au,.midi/.mid,.mp3,.wav and.wma. When you set the music to play automatically, the music is added to the Animation Pane for the slide. By default, it will show up as the final animation on the list and will be set to play after all of the images have faded out. To change the music so it plays along with the slideshow of images, here are the steps: 1. Make sure your Animation Pane is still open. If it is no longer there, click on the Animations tab at the top of the screen and then select Animation Pane. 2. Click on the name of your music file in the Animation Pane. It will be the last item on the list. 3. Drag the music file to the top of the list. 4. Click on the drop down menu next to the name of the music file and change the start trigger to On Click. 5. Click on the drop down menu next to the name of the first image (the second item on the list) and change the start trigger to With Previous. Note: You can also click and drag to change the order of the animations for your images, but make sure you change both the entrance and the exit animations of any picture you move. We need to set the music file to stop playing at the end of all our slides. To do so: 1. Return to the Animation Pane and select the music animation (the first item on the list). 2. From the dropdown menu attached to the animation effect, select Effect Options. 3. Set Stop Playing to After Current Slide. 4. Click OK. Now watch your presentation. The first picture should appear as soon as the music begins, and each picture will fade in and out one after another. The music will end when you advance to the next slide. 4
