Vertical Multiscale Modelling Multiscale Modelling and Design for Engineering Applications Seminar, Espoo, Alejandro Revuelta VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland

2 Usage of CAE in Design At VTT, a survey performed in 2011 about material modelling, listed more than 80 codes 20 commercial, 60 open source or own development. Aproximately 100 menmonth were used that year on using or developing those codes CAE has seen an expanded usage as quality of the tools and hardware has increased and price of underlying hardware decreased to commodity level. CAE is regularly used as part of the workflow of many industries regardless their size.

3 Advantages of Integration Design: Either to formulate a plan for the satisfaction of a specified need or to solve a problem. When the result is having a physical reality, that product must be functional, safe, reliable, competitive, usable, manufacturable and marketable (Shigley, 2003) For complex products, covering all those areas can only be accomplished by a specialized team. Design is an iterative process in which the product improves according to a given metric. CAE tools improve the quality of the design and reduce the time to market. Integration of CAE tools along the design process would come as a natural step improving these advantages even further and exploring new options.

4 Advantages of Integration: A Practical Example

5 Directions of Integration: Multiscale The scales can go from nanometres and nanoseconds and even smaller to kilometres and months or even years.

6 Directions of Integration: Multi Dimension Bearing FEM Vibration Analysis Motor Dimensioning Combination of models which might be at similar scales of time or dimension but correspond to complete different entities. Information from different systems and phenomena are combined together.

7 Directions of Integration: Multiresolution Models represent same domain and scale

8 Putting everything together: challenges Data exchange Handling of models is heterogeneous across different CAE tools: Geometry Boundary Conditions Inputs/Outputs International Standards exist ISO 10303, IEC 61968/70, etc.. but are not generally adopted so far.

9 Putting everything together: challenges Validation and verification Simulation results are only as good as the models it employs. Verification: Making sure that the theoretical model has been implemented correctly and according to the intended design. Validation: Testing how closely the verified theoretical model mimics reality. In an integrative environment errors propagate along the chain.

10 Putting everything together: challenges Computational resource management The required hardware for CAE tools improves steadily Many types of computational resources available: Regular desktop/laptop systems (Single thread/smp) Massively Parallel (Specialised Clusters or GPU computing). Good queuing systems must be in place to distribute these resources optimally. Computational resources available limit the complexity of the models that can be used.

11 Putting everything together: challenges User Interfacing CAE tools are typically divided in: Preprocessor: Set-ups the model and inputs. Help in reducing the necessary working hours. Solver: performs the actual simulation. Postprocessor: helps visualizing the results. Helps identifying underlaying interactions In an integrative environment An additional layer is required on top of the individual CAE tools Certain degree of automation is needed at preprocessor and postprocessor level.

12 Putting everything together: challenges Data enrichment Why repeating calculations that we have already done?. Empirical tests are expensive. Can be used: For validation/verification purposes As data input for some models Stored data, either empirical or from CAE tools, can be used to create metamodels.

13 Putting everything together: challenges Methodology The Methodology is the logic behind the integration. Methodology has to dictate what, when and how different CAE tools need to interact and to which level of resolution For complex integrated systems, a lack of proper methodology would imply unmanageable systems.

18 Summary CAE tools are extensively used for design Integration of CAE tools can lead to solutions which are difficult to obtain following the current design process. It allows to come closer to an overall optimal solution: A product with the best performance. A product which can satisfy all the minimum performance requirements at the minimum cost.
