CORPUS CHRISTI PARISH HEADINGTON Corpus Christi, Margaret Road, Headington and Our Lady of Lourdes, Crown Road, Wheatley GUIDANCE and SUGGESTIONS for BIDDING PRAYERS at SUNDAY MASSES The prayers included in this document have been prepared by members of the Justice and Peace Group in the parish, then supplemented and edited by Fr Baggley. They can be used as they are printed, or used as a basis for preparing your own Bidding Prayers at Mass on Sundays. You can print whatever pages you want to work from. The extract from the General Instructions for the Roman Missal is a good statement of the importance of the work of intercession within the context of the Liturgy of the Mass. PLEASE SCROLL DOWN Guidance From the General Instructions for the Roman Missal: The Universal Prayer In the Universal Prayer or Prayer of the Faithful, the people respond in some sense to the Word of God which they have received in faith and, exercising the office of their baptismal priesthood, offer prayers to God for the salvation of all. It is desirable that there usually be such a form of prayer in Masses celebrated with the people, so that petitions may be offered for holy Church, for those who govern with authority over us, for those weighed down by various needs, for all humanity, and for the salvation of the whole world. The series of intentions is usually to be: a) for the needs of the Church; b) for public authorities and the salvation of the whole world; c) for those burdened by any kind of difficulty; d) for the local community. Nevertheless, in any particular celebration, such as a Confirmation, a Marriage, or at a Funeral, the series of intentions may be concerned more closely with the particular occasion. It is for the Priest Celebrant to regulate this prayer from the chair. He himself begins it with a brief introduction, by which he calls upon the faithful to pray, and likewise he concludes it with an oration. The intentions announced should be sober, be composed with a wise liberty and in few words, and they should be expressive of the prayer of the entire community. They are announced from the ambo or from another suitable place, by the Deacon or by a cantor, a reader, or one of the lay faithful. The people, for their part, stand and give expression to their prayer either by an invocation said in common after each intention or by praying in silence.

1. Suggestions for Bidding Prayers at Sunday Masses May the Lord give strength of spirit and inspiration to our Bishops, priests and deacons in their pastoral work. May God grant his solace and hope to those who are not aware of his presence. We pray for those working to build peace in their communities, may they inspire others by their example and have strength to carry on their work even in the hardest of times. We pray for our sisters and brothers across the world; may we have respect and compassion for them and through our actions be witnesses of God's love. 2. Suggestions for Bidding Prayers at Sunday Masses May our celebration of Sunday Mass renew our spiritual energy and sense of purpose. We pray for all who are suffering financial hardship; may God give them fortitude and help in their need. We pray for those who are sick in mind or body; for those who mourn, and those without faith, hope or love. May God s love bring them hope and a new strength of purpose. We give thanks for health and happiness; may we be generous in our concern for the sick and the sad.

3. Suggestions for Bidding Prayers at Sunday Masses May we welcome visitors and newcomers to our parish; may they take their part in the work and witness of the parish. We pray for the religious orders in Oxford, and give thanks for their witness and ministry. We pray for those who suffer or are displaced through conflicts, and we pray for peaceful resolution of conflicts. For those who are hungry, lack clean water or are afflicted by disease - let us pray for them and work for their welfare. We pray for all who work with the sick. 4. Suggestions for Bidding Prayers at Sunday Masses May we gain inspiration from those who risked and sacrificed much to maintain the Faith. May we encourage our young people to live the Faith with courage and devotion. May our parish community be willing to help those in need of care and friendship. We pray for all people who have been afflicted by violence; as they rebuild their lives, may they find it in their hearts to move forward in forgiveness and peace. We give thanks for the God-given variety and diversity in the world; we pray that all nations will co-operate to protect the resources of the earth, and find ways to promote sustainable development.

5. Suggestions for Bidding Prayers at Sunday Masses Lord, bless and help Pope Benedict in his ministry to the Universal Church. May those who have a sense of priestly vocation respond generously to the call of God. We pray for our communities, homes, schools, and places of work; may we be peacemakers and reconcilers. We pray for the leaders of the nations, that they may seek the welfare of all the peoples of the earth. 6. Suggestions for Bidding Prayers at Sunday Masses We pray that the leaders of industry and commerce will respect the resources of the earth, and the needs of the poor. Let us pray for those who sleep rough in all weathers, and for young people in night shelters, lonely and fearful. We pray for those who are elderly and housebound; for people with dementia, and for their carers. We give thanks for beauty of our land; may God help us cherish the environment in which we live.

7. Suggestions for Bidding Prayers at Sunday Masses Let us pray for all engaged in missionary work. Let us pray for those who are preparing for the priesthood, and for the staff of our seminaries. We pray for those who are consigned to tented emergency living; may they be granted secure and permanent homes for their families. (Pause) Lord, hear us. Let us pray for CAFOD, PROGRESSIO, OXFAM and Christian Aid and all other agencies working for justice and peace in difficult conditions; may their work be blessed and their projects flourish. 8. Suggestions for Bidding Prayers at Sunday Masses Heavenly Father, in a world of sadness, help us find joy; in a world of arrogance and greed, grant us gifts of humility and charity; in a world of doubt, help keep and share our Faith We pray for all who suffer from depressive illness, and those who seek to help them. May we all respond to the needs of the hungry and the homeless, wherever they may be.

9. Suggestions for Bidding Prayers at Sunday Masses We pray for our local Catholic Schools, for their staff, the children and the parents. We pray for vocations to the Priesthood and the consecrated life. (Pause) Lord, hear us. We pray for all who serve as Members of Parliament, and in local government. May we cherish the resources of food and drink and energy; may our stewardship help others to prosper. 10. Suggestions for Bidding Prayers at Sunday Masses Let us give thanks for our opportunities to worship at Mass, and pray for those who are deprived of the celebration of Mass. Let us pray for the musicians, servers, readers and special ministers of the Eucharist in our parish. We pray for all involved in medical and nursing work. We pray for peace in the world that all peoples may live free from violence, in safety and security and hope.

11. Suggestions for Bidding Prayers at Sunday Masses Let us give thanks for the diversity of human life represented in our parish; we give thanks for the variety of national and cultural heritage. Let us pray for those parts of the world where there is racial or religious conflict; may God bless all who work for peace and reconciliation. We pray for those who live crowded in shanty-towns, without the basics facilities for their livelihood. Let us give thanks for the help we receive and give within our communities. May God bless us all in our homes and families. 12. Suggestions for Bidding Prayers at Sunday Masses We give thanks for musicians and artists who give us inspiration and help us to appreciate the beauty and goodness of God s creation. Let us pray that we may be good stewards of the gifts of the earth, and use them responsibly. We pray for all who serve in local government. We pray for those who have lost their jobs, and for young people seeking work.
