AN ADVENT PRAYER FOR JUSTICE & PEACE from David Haas GATHERING SONG: GREETING: Mark Hakomaki In the Time of God (Psalm 72) David Haas (from the CD: Echo of Faith GIA) PRAYER: Let us pray as we remember that we are in the holy presence of God. And may we also remember that we are in the presence of each other God s holy people. Let us pray. Gracious God, you you alone are the one who guides and shepherds us. You alone keep our lives intact; you keep us safe and sane. Come now, and awaken us. Rouse us to experience and know your power and presence. Come now, and take the gifts that you have instilled in us
so that we may speak and sing of the justice and peace that comes from the promise of your Word. Help us to stay awake and wait for you. Help us to keep watch and recognize that you are close, that you are coming to be with us. Fill us now with the kindness to be people of justice. Fill us now with calm, to be your presence of peace. Fill us with eyes opened, ears cleared, and hearts receptive to pray - for ourselves and on behalf of those in need and who ache for your loving presence. We ask this in your name, and let the church say: Let us now be still, and listen to God s wisdom. WISDOM: Reader #1: This wisdom comes to us from the prophet Amos. I hate and I despise your ceremonies, and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies and gatherings. Even though you offer me your offerings and sacrifices, I will not accept them. I am not impressed. Take away from me the noise of your songs; I will not listen to your melodies, your playing, your strumming, your drumming, or your singing. Save me your songs! But let justice roll down like a river and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream. The Word of the Lord. Copyright 2009 David Haas. Art by Mark Hakomaki, All rights reserved. 2
Thanks be to God. (time for silent prayer) Reader #2: This wisdom comes to us from Oscar Romero. Peace is not the product of terror or fear. Peace is not the silence of cemeteries. Peace is not the silent result of violent repression. Peace is the generous, tranquil contribution of all to the good of all. Peace is dynamism. Peace is generosity. It is right and it is duty. The Word of God s servant. Thanks be to God. RESPONSE CANTICLE: (time for silent prayer) PRAYERS: Holy Is Your Name (Magnificat / Luke: 1:46 55) David Haas (from the CD: Glory to God: The Best of David Haas, Vol. 4) God, come now and hear the cries of all in need. For all who are defeated and discouraged by life itself, For all the children who are hungry, For the homeless who have no place to sleep, Copyright 2009 David Haas. Art by Mark Hakomaki, All rights reserved. 3
For the women who are abused and battered, For the men who know only grief and regret, For those imprisoned without friendship, For those physically and mentally challenged who are neglected, For the unborn who cannot discover breath and life, For the executed who have no one to cry for them, For the elderly who are pushed away and forgotten, For the gay and lesbian who are judged, feared, and scorned, For the sick and the ill who are alone, For the believers of different sacred traditions who are misunderstood, Copyright 2009 David Haas. Art by Mark Hakomaki, All rights reserved. 4
God, come now, and hear the cries that lie deep in the silence of our hearts. We cry out: THE LORD S PRAYER: Gathering all of our prayers and praise into one, let us pray the prayer of Christ, our light and our brother: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. FINAL PRAYER: Let us pray. Gracious God, you are so faithful, so fair and just and we know and believe you are always here. We are blest by your love and compassion, and you honor all of us by your promise to come and dwell with us. May the lowly always sing of your goodness; may the brokenhearted know your healing; may those imprisoned find new freedom; Copyright 2009 David Haas. Art by Mark Hakomaki, All rights reserved. 5
and may the calling that you have entrusted to us be like your most lavish justice, which always rains down on the meadow, like the showers that water the earth. May we rest in you always, and may we always feel your peace. We ask this in your name, and let the church say: BLESSING: May we all be blest in the name of our Creator God, in the presence of Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit to always seek justice, make peace, and honor God s reign, forever and ever. Let us now share with each other the sign of peace and shalom. (the peace is shared) OPTIONAL SONG: They Who Do Justice (Psalm 15) David Haas (from the CD: Without Seeing You: The Best of David Haas, Vol. 3 GIA) Mark Hakomaki Copyright 2009 David Haas.
