3 2 General Mobile Computing Information Powering on a YCP Owned Laptop/Tablet PC To turn on the system, press the power button. For more detailed information regarding where the power button is located on a particular model, please refer to the contents on page 1. Logging onto the Laptop All YCP laptops assigned to an employee arrive with a generic password. Username: user Password: <blank> (no password required) If any other username is listed in the username box (ie. Admin or Intern), simply delete the username and type user. Click OK to gain access. Setting a Log in Password A password must be set on this computer for security reasons. 1. First, log in with the user account. (NOTE: The log in will always be user.) 2. Once Windows has loaded, hit Ctrl + Alt + Delete. 3. Click the Change Password button. 4. Enter the old password (if no password, leave blank). 5. Enter and then re enter the new password as instructed. NOTE: For security reasons, the log in password should not be the same password used to connect to the YCP network. If the log in password is forgotten, Information Technology will have to remove the password and assign a new one. Shutting Down the Laptop 1. Click Start (Figure 1). 2. Click Shut Down (Figure 2). The Shut Down Windows box will appear. Make sure the Shut Down option is selected in the drop down menu, as pictured on theright (Figure 2). 3. Click OK. The computer will then power off (Figure 2). 4 3 Connecting to the Internet/Network There are two ways to gain access to the Internet and Network: Local Area Network Connection (LAN) Wireless Area Network Connection (In select cases, a Verizon Air Card may also be available. For more information on this option, please refer to Appendix B.) Local Area Network Connection To connect to the Local Area Network (LAN), a network cable must be plugged into both the laptop and a functioning data jack. The connector of this cable is larger than that of a phone cord (Figure 3). To ensure access to the YCP network, all college owned laptops have been registered by the I.T. Department. If there is reason to suspect that a system is not registered, please contact the I.T. Help Desk at x1559. Figure 3 While connected to the LAN, it is best to disable the wireless connection; leaving both connections enabled may cause a conflict in the system. This conflict will result in an inability to access network drives and the internet. To disable the wireless connection, refer to the section Controlling the Wireless. NOTE: If using a Verizon Card, please follow the software method of turning off the wireless connection. Wireless Area Network Connection If the system is owned by York College, the wireless connection has already been established. To connect to the YCP Wireless Network: 1. Make sure the wireless card is turned on. (Some may have a switch on the laptop itself, while others will have to be controlled through software methods. See page 4 and 5 for more on this topic.) 2. Open a new web browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, etc.). 3. When the browser opens, the Network Access Control page will appear (Figure 4). Please enter the YCP User Name and Password used to access and MyYCP. 4. Once the system has authenticated, full access to the internet will begin. Figure 4

5 4 Controlling the Wireless Disabling Wireless through the Hardware 1. For the location of the wireless switch on your system, please refer to the diagrams on your system. 2. Wireless is enabled when the control switch is locked to the right. To disable the wireless, move the switch to the left (Figure 5). NOTE: If the system is equipped with a Verizon Card, the wireless switch will also turn off the wireless card. Figure 5 3. A Wireless Radio Status box may open. Click OK (Figure 6). NOTE: If wireless is enabled, holding the blue Function Key (Fn) and pressing F5 will disable the wireless. Disabling Wireless through the Software The network connection settings are located in the lower right corner of the desktop. The two computer icons with the red X s are networks that are not connected, while the third icon is the Wireless Network Connection. When the cursor is placed over this icon, the name the network system is currently connected to, as well the strength of the connection, will appear (Figure 7). Figure 6 Figure 7 1. Right click on the Wireless Network Connection icon, and select Disable (Figure 8). 2. This will disconnect the wireless network. Figure 8

6 5 Enabling Wireless through the Hardware 1. For the location of the wireless switch on your system, please refer to the diagrams on your system. The switch will look similar to the one in Figure 9. NOTE: Wireless is disabled when the control switch is locked to the left. 2. To enable the wireless, move the switch to the right. On the Lenovo Systems, a green light will show when the wireless is enabled (Figure 10). Optional: If wireless is disabled, holding the Function Key (Fn) and pressing F5 will enable the wireless. Figure 9 Figure 10 Enabling Wireless through the Software To reconnect the laptop to the YCP wireless network: 1. Click Start. 2. Click My Computer. 3. Click Connect To. 4. Select Wireless Network Connection (Figure 11). Figure 11

7 6 Authenticating to the Wireless Network When the wireless is enabled, the system still needs to be authenticated to the YCP network before utilizing online tools. To authenticate, open a new web browser. Enter the user name and password (same as those used to access MyYCP), and click Login (Figure 12). Figure 12 After logging into the wireless, the screen will show a Result page. Please wait until the network connection is established. Once the connection is established, the system will be able to access network resources (Figure 13). Figure 13

8 7 Mapping Network Drives 1. Verify that the system has a network connection by opening a browser window and navigating to a website (For example: 2. Click Start in the bottom left corner. 3. Right click on My Computer. 4. Click on Map Network Drive (Figure 14). 5. The Map Network Drive box will appear (Figure 15). Figure 14 Figure Select an open drive from the Drive drop down menu. NOTE: For the H: drive, select the letter H from the menu, as shown in Figure 16. Figure 16

9 8 7. Once the H: drive letter has been selected, enter the path to map in the Folder area. For the H: drive, enter \\files\ Username, as shown in Figure 17. NOTE: Make sure the Reconnect at log in box is NOT checked! 8. Once the drive letter has been selected and the drive name is entered, click Finish. Figure A login box will appear that is similar to the one shown in Figure 18. Enter a YCP user name and password to connect to the drive. 10. Once the user name and password have been entered, click OK. This will complete the mapping process. Figure 18 The drive will now appear in My Computer under Network Drives (Figure 19). This mapping process can be repeated for other drives. 10 9 Lenovo Model X200 Tablet Please note the Tablet PC assistance in Appendix A for information on how to use this system as a tablet. System overview The Lenovo x200 Tablet is an easy to use system(figure 20). The following is a brief run down of where components can be located, as well as a general overview of the system. Keyboard hints: When in a smart classroom, use the FN+ F7 combination to toggle between the monitor and the projector. FN+F2 will lock the computer. FN +F5 will toggle the wireless on or off. 11 10 Docking Station Overview For those who have purchased a docking station, please note the following: When using a docking station, please turn off the wireless by flipping the wireless radio (indicated above). If the wireless is not turned off, the system may not recognize the YCP network and fail to connect to network drives and printers. Connecting to a Dock To connect the ThinkPad to the dock, simply place it squarely on top of the dock and gently push down. To power the system on so that the images display on the monitor, push the power button on the dock. This button is found near the front speakers on the docking station. (If the system is powered on with the tablet, open the FN + F7 key to toggle to the Monitor.) Figure 22 Undocking 1. To undock the tablet pull the Ultra Base eject lever (#12) in Figure 22. Note: If the desire is to undock without shutting down a safe way to do this is to press the eject request button (#11) in Figure 22. Wait for the green light to appear before following step #1.

12 11 Lenovo T410 System overview The Lenovo T410 is an easy to use system. The following is a brief run down of where components can be located, as well as a general overview of the system. Keyboard hints: When in a smart classroom, use the FN+ F7 combination to toggle between the monitor and the projector. FN+F2 will lock the computer. FN + F5 will toggle the wireless on and off. 13 12 APPENDIX A For Tablet PC s These systems both function as a laptop and also allow input from a pen device. Using the Laptop s Tablet Functions: 1. When logging onto the laptop, it is common to see a Welcome to Tablet PC window (Figure 24). (This is an excellent tool used to learn general facts about using the Tablet PC.) 2. Select Get Going with Tablet PC for an on system guide to general information about the tablet. 3. Select Tablet PC Tutorials to get an online interactive tour of the tablet s features. 4. If the tablet window does not appear when starting the system, it can be located in the Help and Support menu (Figure 25). 5. The stylus can be located on the left side of the laptop for the Lenovo (Figure 41). Gently press the grey tip in, and allow the stylus to pop out. Figure 24 Figure The tablet functions can be used on the screen both vertically and horizontally. The normal design of the laptop screen is horizontal. 7. To orient the screen vertically for a greater tablet function, simply swivel the screen clockwise 360 degrees on its mount. Gently push the screen down as if closing the laptop (Figure 28). 14 13 8. Find a comfortable position in which to utilize the stylus (Figure 29). Figure When using the stylus to navigate Windows by touch, the articulation is similar to using a mouse. 10. Figure 30 shows the actions based on the transition from mouse to stylus. Figure 30
