3 ONE TO ONE Differentiated Learning Creating personal learning support for students to access anytime Wayland High School Business Instructor uses the Macbook Air and Adobe Captivate to create innovated ways for students to reflect on their understanding. Empowering Students Walk into the Principles of Entrepreneurship and Business Management Class (EBM) and you will feel the creative energy that is woven into the fabric of the class. The EBM class blends instruction with project based applications. Students present new business opportunities, create new marketing campaigns or learn about the value of the relationship of business and social responsibility. Each of these experiences empower students to take learning into their own hands. One to One Complimenting the students hands on interactive experiences, the business teachers wanted to create an interactive study resource to help students prepare for exams. The WHS One-To-One program, coupled with Its Learning, the High Schools Learning Management System Multiple Learning Modalities Online Curriculum Student Engagement The MacBook Air is perfect for offering this unique, personalized learning experience (LMS) and Adobe Captivate, Adobe s e-learning authoring program, the instructors created a unique study resource for students to access. This unique, interactive learning environment complemented their hands on experience. The hardware and software contained in MacBook Airs offered an ideal vehicle for accessing this information at the students preferred medium, pace and time. Differentiated Experience The study guide packaged existing content with periodic assessments, realtime feedback and different content depending on the student response. This approach would allow students to identify concepts that they needed additional support and allow the teachers to offer these concepts from a different perspective all within the study guide. Realtime reporting through the LMS allowed teachers to identify students that needed additional support as well as recognize the concepts that the students struggled with. Teachers could also identify emerging trends throughout the class, defining student needs and allowing for efficient allocation of valuable in-class time. One to One Resources Used The One-to-One program allows teachers to identify students needs and create flexible learning supports that are accessible to students. Students experience a unique, engaging experience through their preferred medium allowing for effective use of classroom time. Wayland Staff Member (Scroll to view) MacBook Air / OS 8 2

Reading and Writing Supports Click to hear Tessa One support, Voiceover, found standard on the MAC OSX, allows students to listen to the displayed text in a language that they choose. The audio option is a great alternative way to access the information. In addition, students increase the portability of the information by loading the audio file to to personal Mp3 player. When you couple voice over with the additional reading and writing supports found on the Mac OSX you begin to realize how many resources are the students fingertips. Click on each icon below to access information about Apple Dictation, Dictionary and Word Completion. All Students resources The students in the Wayland High School Information Technology (IT) program learn about the tools available to them through the MacBook Air; One-to-One program. 7 O NE TO O NE Authentic Language Learning Using computers in the classroom to access authentic French material. When students step into Madame Pineault s class, a French II teacher at Wayland High School, they have already watched a video in French the night before to be prepared for their class conversation. Listening to spoken French Madame Pineault often begins her class with an oral warm up based on components in the video from the previous evening. Pineault poses a question to which students communicate in French. All grammatical issues are discussed as they arise, written as notes on the Eno board, and saved for all students to access at a later time. Pineault roams the room and is able to give students individual attention. French Discussion As Madame Pinealt projects pieces of last nights video students describe and discuss the story. The focus is 100 percent on using their language. Students return to their laptop and join in a Student begin class sharing their weekend plans. Multiple Learning Modalities Online Curriculum Student engagement Authentic French Connections outside the Classroom I find the videos to be helpful because I can pause, rewatch and practice at my own pace Student collaborative conversation where they respond to questions posed One to One Resources Used by Pineault. Using an online (Scroll to view) collaboration tool, Padlet, their sentences are projected on the white board at the front of the room. All students check sentence structure and grammar as the responses are continuously projected onto the Padlet Wall. Pineault circles the room and uses her ipad mini to pose other questions as the conversation develops. Connecting beyond Classroom Pineault extends the learning beyond the classroom by connecting with students in France through epals. Students introduced themselves to their French counterparts by creating a video and sharing it with them. Throughout the year students continue their correspondents with their epals by writing letters. Their epals wrote back in English. Tap to view introduction to epals Students take their epal on a tour of the high school and introduce themselves to their epal in France. 6
