5 5 In the four years that I have been at the University of Arizona, I have taught the editing skills course (after teaching only reporting for more than 20 years) and also have developed Arizona-Sonora News Service a news service that is staffed by students and supplying media in multiple formats to newspapers and online sites in Arizona and beyond. A basic editing course is no longer about editing newspaper stories on paper and writing headlines. The course must be taught now to show students how to edit for a variety of media and largely online. At the same time, we must continue to teach students the basics of journalism beyond writing and editing: thinking critically, working in a multicultural environment, and operating within a legal and ethical framework. Operating legally and ethically in an Internet world has become a great challenge for students in any field, and so I continue to stress the importance of fact checking in my editing classes. Surprisingly, my students continue to find factual errors in numerous stories that have been published in professional publications and online sites. Arizona-Sonora News Service began as an idea sketched out during several meetings on how we could move our school media to a different level and on multiple platforms. It took three years, but we finally have the site up and running. It is staffed by graduate and undergraduate students, and we are supplying journalism to media throughout the state and beyond.
