Prerequisite(s): SHS 311 with C or better; Credit is allowed for only SHS 401 or 501 Basic Audiometry (4 units) Covers the bases, purposes, rationales, and procedures for the core clinical tests of auditory function in adults and children. Prerequisite(s): Doctor of Audiology, or PHD Speech and Hearing Amplification I (4 units) Operation, electroacoustic measurement, selection, and prescriptive fitting of amplification devices. Prerequisite(s): Doctor of Audiology or PHD Speech and Hearing Survival Sign Language (2 units) Facilitates effective manual and alternative methods of communication with deaf individuals in clinical settings. Pediatric Audiology (3 units) Emphasizes the principles and procedures for early identification and management of congenital and early-onset hearing loss.

Prerequisite(s): Doctor of Audiology or PHD Speech and Hearing Topics in Management of Medical Aspects of Speech-Language Pathology (2 units) Focuses on varying topics in management of medically based speech and language disorders. Prerequisite(s): degree- or nondegree-seeking graduate student Neurophysiology of the Auditory System (3 units) Focuses on the neurophysiology of the normal auditory system and on changes associated with hearing loss. Instrumentation and Calibration (2 units) Electronic instruments used to produce, modify, and measure characteristics of sound. Measurement standards and methods for calibration of audiologic equipment. Auditory Evoked Potentials (3 units) Electrophysiologic assessment of the peripheral and central auditory nervous system. Prerequisite(s): Doctor of Audiology or PHD Speech and Hearing Auditory Pathologies and Disorders (3 units) Familiarizes students with major diseases, pathologies, and disorders of the human auditory system. Auditory Pathologies/Disorders and Otoneurologic Applications (4 units) Familiarizes students with major pathologies and disorders of the human auditory system. Examines advanced otologic, neurologic, and audiologic approaches in the differential diagnosis and treatment of peripheral and central disorders of the auditory system. Prerequisite(s): Speech and Hearing Science graduate student Auditory Aging (2 units) Focuses on aging and related effects on the auditory system and audition. Hearing Conservation/Instrumentation (3 units) Examines the prevention, identification, physiologic effects, and management of hearing loss due to noise exposure. Incorporates measurement standards and methods for calibration of electronic audiologic instruments used to produce, modify, and measure characteristics of sound.

Prerequisite(s): SHS major; SHS 502 and SHS 513 Counseling in Communication Disorders (2 units) Theories of counseling emphasizing the psychological and emotional impact and management of individuals with communication disorders and their families. Audiology Practice Management (3 units) Business practice issues, quality assurance, and professional ethics for the practicing audiologist. Prerequisite(s): Doctor of Audiology or PHD Speech and Hearing Development, Assessment, Intervention: Conception through 3 years (4 units) Covers development of children from conception to 3 years of age with a focus in early intervention. Includes child development of anatomical, neurophysiology, cognitive, motor, perceptual, speech, language and hearing aspects. Also addresses service delivery models in different contexts in children with atypical development in the different areas. Communication Disorders and Multicultural Populations (3 units) Studies racial and ethnic biases and the communication behaviors and disorders in various cultural groups. Augmentative Communication and Language Programming (3 units) Focuses on individuals across the age span who are unable or who are at risk for being unable to communicate with spoken language.

Management of Voice and Swallowing Disorders (2 units) Focuses on assessment and intervention of people with voice, swallowing, and craniofacial disorders. Aphasia and Related Neurogenic Language Disorders (2-3 units) Assessment and treatment of acquired neurolinguistic impairment. Neuromotor Speech Disorders (2-3 units) Evaluation and treatment of the dysarthrias and apraxia of speech. Emphasizes acquired adult disorders. Communication Disorders in Autism (2 units)

Presents assessment and treatment strategies. Primary course component: Practicum Right Hemisphere Syndrome, Traumatic Brain Injury, and Dementia (2 units) Studies the nature, characteristics, and clinical management of cognitive and communicative impairments accompanying right hemisphere damage, TBI, and dementia. Primary course component: Seminar Prerequisite(s): Graduate student (degree seeking or nondegree seeking); Credit is allowed for only SHS 588 or APL 588 Audiology Grand Rounds (1 unit) Grand Rounds bridges clinical and academic knowledge through case studies, application of emerging research, and clinical workshops. Primary course component: Seminar Reading and Conference (1-12 units) Independent study in which a student meets regularly with a faculty member to discuss assignments. Course may include such assignments as intensive reading in a specialized area, writing a synthesis of literature on a specified topic, or writing a literature review of a topic. Credit is allowed for only SHS 496 or 596 Bilingual Speech-Language Pathology (2 units) Reviews speech and language assessment and intervention practices with bilingual populations from infants to adults. Credit is not awarded, and no grade is assigned.
