3 Now That I Am Saved, Can I Ever Lose My Salvation? Once you have settled the question of salvation as the Bible declares it by grace through faith in Jesus Christ it is imperative that you understand how that decision has affected your entire life. LESSON 4

4 The purpose of this lesson is to show from the Bible some basic facts regarding salvation. Our focus in this Bible study will be on eternal security, the teaching of the Bible that once you are saved, you can never lose your salvation. 5 Lesson 4 INTRODUCTION Jesus made an incredible statement which is recorded in John 10:27-29: My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give them ETERNAL LIFE: and they shall NEVER perish, neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father s hand. The teachings of these verses plainly show that once people have been saved: -they have eternal life. -they will never perish. -they are in God s hand and nothing can remove them. This teaching of the Scriptures that once saved, always saved is known as the eternal security of the believer. This booklet is designed to give you a basic understanding of your eternal security in Jesus Christ. 3

6 Discipleship Eternal Security GOD S FAMILY 1. How did Christ teach the disciples to address God? (Matthew 6:9) 2. According to John 8:42-44, is God the Father of every one? Please explain: 3. From John 8:42-44, you learn that there are two fami - lies. Who are they? 4. How is an individual born into God s family? 5. John 3:3-8 talks about being born again. a. Can a person be a part of God s kingdom without being born into His family? 4

7 Lesson 4 b. You entered the human family by birth. How do you enter God s family? 6. There are some benefits to being part of God s family. Look up Romans 8:15-17 and list some of these benefits. It is important for us to understand that as Christians we are a part of God s family. Galatians 3:26, For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. As children of God, we are assured that God is our Heavenly Father. This is our relationship to God. He is our Father! We are his children! John spoke of this in I John 3:1-3: Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God. We have security in this family. Once we become a child of God by faith in Jesus Christ, we will always be a child of our Heavenly Father. 5

8 Discipleship Eternal Security ETERNAL LIFE Not only are we a permanent part of God s family, but He has given us eternal life. The Bible refers to salvation as passing from death to life....he who hears My word, and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgement, but has passed from death into life. John 5:24 Eternal or everlasting life is exactly what it says it is unending life. At salvation we are given unending life. That is security. 1. According to Titus 1:2, a. What is the hope of the Christian? b. What has God promised you? c. Can God lie? 6

9 Lesson 4 2. In I John 2:25, what is the promise of God to you? 3. Read I John 5:11-13 carefully and answer the following questions: a. According to verse 11, what has God given you? b. From verse 12, how do you know you have life? c. What does God want you to KNOW in verse 13? d. How long is eternal? e. If you have something forever, can it be taken away? 7

10 Discipleship Eternal Security SECURITY 1. Read John 10: a. What has God given to those who accept Him as Savior? b. What does it mean to perish? c. Where has God placed you as a believer? d. Is there any man who can cast you out of God s hand? 2. According to II Timothy 1:12, did Paul doubt his security in Jesus Christ? 3. Read I Peter 1:3-5. a. According to verse 4, did Peter doubt his eternal security? 8

11 Lesson 4 b. After reading verse 5, was Peter s eternal life dependent upon himself or God? God has reserved a place for us as His children in Heaven. God, who cannot lie, has made us a promise of eternal life, and He will perform what He has promised. Therefore, our security comes from having God as our Heavenly Father and having received eternal life. These two truths in our life form the foundation of our future. We are eternally secure in Jesus Christ. MORE EVIDENCE 1. Read Romans 8: Is there anything that can separate you from God? 2. According to Ephesians 1:13-14, what did God give you as a down-payment or guarantee? 9

12 Discipleship Eternal Security One question often asked is, If I sin, will I lose my salvation? No truly born again individual should ever think that because he is secure he does not have to worry about sin in his life. In fact, the Bible teaches the opposite. Because we are saved, we must seek to live apart from sin. 3. The Bible records David s great sin in the Old Testament. Psalm 51 is his confession of this sin. Read it carefully. a. According to verse 12, what did David lose? b. Based on this chapter, did David s sin affect his Relationship with God or His fellowship with God? Sin does not alter your relationship, but sin does affect your fellowship. 4. I John 1:9 a. What should you do when you sin? b. What does God do when you confess your sin? 10

13 Lesson 4 CONCLUSION Eternal security is taught throughout the Bible. It means: God is our Heavenly Father and we are part of His family. God promises us Heaven and nothing can prevent it from coming to pass. The Holy Spirit within us is our down-payment until the time God gives us our redeemed body. We, as children of God, are special in Jesus Christ. 11
