3. Set desired file name settings You have an opportunity to give names to converted photos: choose one of the Presets or click Edit to set your own rename settings. If you want to keep original file names, set the File Name to Original. Construct file names using text and tags. Page 6 of 30
4. Add actions PhotoMill offers many different actions which allow you to adjust image geometry, metadata, colors, watermark with text/image etc. To add an action, press the + button and choose an action: All actions are grouped into categories: Geometry (scale/crop/rotate/etc.), Watermarks (text/image/rectangle), Filters (color adjustments, like contrast/grayscale/sepia/colorize/etc.), Alpha Channel (working with alpha channel), Color Marching (working with color profiles), Metadata (tags correction). Go to Actions chapter below to find out more about each of the actions in more details. Page 7 of 30
NOTE: While converting, actions are performed one by one and you can change their order by dragging and dropping. To duplicate an action with all its settings, drag and drop it holding Alt key. To display an original image in the Preview, click and hold the Quick Look button. Click the Compare button to see Before & After images at the same time. Page 8 of 30
5. Convert photos To start converting, press the Convert button and choose the folder where photos will be converted to. After a while photos will be converted to the selected destination with meaningful file names. Now it s time to show photos to your friends! The Convert button converts all photos. If you want to convert one image (for instance, to check settings) or several, select them, right click and choose Convert in the menu. Click the Share button to share your photos to Facebook, upload to Flickr or transfer your photos to other computer via AirDrop: photos will be converted and sent to the selected service. 10 II. Metadata Editor PhotoMill allows you to correct EXIF/IPTC metadata tags in your photos: place GPS coordinates, remove private information from your photos, correct or set capture dates, add your own copyright, keywords or rating. To show the metadata editor, select photos you want to edit and press the Edit Exif button on the toolbar. Set Capture Date - changes (or adds if missing) the EXIF date of your photos. Capture Date is a metadata tag usually added by a camera itself, and it can be wrong or missing. Shift Capture Date - shifts the EXIF date of photos and allows you to correct wrong camera settings or adjust photos which were taken in another time zone. Page 10 of 30
File Creation to Capture Date - sets the EXIF date from a file creation date. It s a good option to correct photos without original capture date. Remove Private Tags - keeps your photos private by removing personal information, including: GPS tags, camera owner, keywords etc. It s recommended to remove your privacy before uploading to web, Facebook, Flickr, Picasa or other social networks. Add Keywords - adds IPTC keywords assigned to your photos (or replaces the existing). Keywords are widely used in photo organization tools, like Apple Photos, Aperture or Adobe Lightroom. Set Copyright and Owner - sets copyright and owner/artist tags. Set Rating - sets IPTC rating: from zero to five stars. Set GPS Location - sets GPS geo-tags. Click Show Large Map to display a large map window with the search field. Right-click on the map to place a pin. Page 11 of 30
III. Actions a. Geometry Scale - resizes an image keeping aspect ratio. Available methods: Resize in percentage, Resize to fit long edge, Resize to fit short edge, Resize to fix: long x short edges, Resize to fix: width x height and Resize to megapixels. Original 4608x3072 Scaled 2048x1365 Scale to Size - resizes an image to an exact image size, keeping aspect ratio and filling parts with a chosen color. It s the best choice to prepare images for ebay and other sites that need photos to be a certain size. Original 3072x4608 Scaled 1500x2000 Page 12 of 30
Crop - trims an image to a selected aspect ratio. Values either in "Long Edge x Short Edge or Width x Height. The Anchor determines which part of an image is kept. Original 3072x4608 Cropped 2304x4608 Cropped 3072x1536 Original 3072x4608 Page 13 of 30
Add Border - adds pixels to edges with a selected color. Values are in pixels or percentage to width/height. Borders can be added either outside or inside of an image. Original 4608x3072 Converted 4746x3579 Trim - cuts edges. Values are in pixels or percentage of width/height. Original 4608x3072 Trimmed 4746x3579 Trim Color - cuts edges if colors are matched with the tolerance. You can remove transparent/half-transparent pixels or solid color pixels starting from the left top or bottom right corner. Plus, you can restrict what edges to cut. Original half-transparent pixels Trimmed no half-transparent pixels Page 14 of 30
Rotate & Flip - rotates 90 degrees clockwise/counterclockwise, 180 degrees or flips vertically/horizontally. Change Resolution - sets DPI (dots per inch) of a destination image. b. Watermarks Watermark Text - adds text onto photos. You have an opportunity to use photo metadata information - tags: capture date, keywords, camera maker etc., as well as entered text. Rich flexible settings allow you to fully control text style. To add multiline text, press Alt+Enter and change text alignment to Left/ Center/Right. Page 15 of 30
The Opacity slider changes overall text transparency, plus, you can control text, stroke and shadow color opacity separately via the standard Colors palette. Font size can be either fixed or relative to an image width, height, long or short edge. Text position is controlled by 9 anchor dots and text offset. Also, you have an opportunity to rotate and tile text. Page 16 of 30
If you use calligraphic font, like Zapfino, your text might be cut. To correct this behavior, change the Text Geometry settings to Current Text in the Preferences window (use the menu PhotoMill > Preferences to show the window). Watermark Image - adds an image onto photos. Watermark image size can be either fixed or relative to main image size. Image tiling is also available. Page 17 of 30
Watermark Rectangle - draws a rectangle: square or rounded; fill and stroke color can be half-transparent. Hint: a combination of Watermark Rectangle and Watermark Text can give you a desired result. Page 18 of 30
c. Filters Auto Contrast - automatically adjusts colors to get the best contrast. Auto White Balance - automatically adjusts colors to get the best white balance. Gamma - adjusts the dark tones of an image. Contrast - changes the overall contrast of an image. You control contrast and shift. Exposure - adjusts the overall exposure of an image. Sharpness - adjusts the overall sharpness of an image. Page 19 of 30
Blur - softens an image. Grayscale - converts colors to gray tone using a selected method. Color model of an image isn t changed. Sepia - converts colors to sepia tone with a selected intensity. Colorize - converts colors to a color-based tone. Page 20 of 30
Temperature - adjust colors to make a photo warmer or cooler. HSL Channels - controls colors in Hue/Saturation/Lightness color model. HSV Channels - controls colors in Hue/Saturation/Value(Brightness) color model. RGB Channels - adjusts colors in an RGB color model; for instance, it allows you to enhance red colors in your photo. Page 21 of 30
Levels - adjusts lighter and darker areas in an image. You control overall Gamma, minimum/maximum Input and Output values. Curves - adjusts colors and contrast of an image. You can control all channels at once, or red/green/blue separately. To add points, click to the curve, for example, creating an S-shaped curve. Deviations from the diagonal starting line towards the right reduce the intensity while deviations to the left intensify the brightness or color. The gray shading on the edge of the grid shows that the lower or left-hand sections of the curve are responsible for the dark areas of an image and the upper or right-hand sections of the curve for the light areas of an image. Hold Alt key to move the whole curve, Shift - to move a dragging point only horizontally. Page 22 of 30
d. Alpha Channel Alpha Mask - adds transparency by blending a source image and a grayscale mask. Masks allow you to create decorative edges, soft fades and translucent effects. The pure black portions of a mask represent the areas of your original image that are completely erased. PhotoMill has 116 built-in masks, also you have an opportunity to select your own mask image. If destination image format doesn t support alpha channel, transparency is replaced with a background color (black by default). You can change the alpha background color in the Preferences window (use the menu PhotoMill > Preferences to show the window). Color to Alpha - replaces a chosen color with transparency. This action is opposite to the Alpha to Color action. Alpha to Color - replaces transparency with a chosen color. A combination with the Alpha Mask action allows you to create nice frames for your photos. Page 23 of 30
e. Color Matching Assign Profile - embeds a color profile to an image. This action doesn't alter pixels - it only tells the computer that these pixels belong to a specific color space. Original Profile: Nikon srgb Converted Profile: Adobe RGB PhotoMill uses color profiles installed on your Mac and filters profiles according to the selected color model (RGB, CMYK, Gray). To install profile files (*.icc), copy them to the Library/ColorSync/Profiles folder on your Mac. Convert to Profile - sets a color profile and converts pixels so that the image retains the same look. Original Profile: Nikon srgb Converted Profile: Adobe RGB Page 24 of 30
Proof with Profile - converts pixels to a color profile. A selected profile isn t embedded to an image. This action might be used as a color effect. Original Profile: Nikon srgb Converted Profile: Nikon srgb f. Metadata Actions are the same as in the Metadata Editor (see II. Metadata Editor ). Page 25 of 30
IV. Presets Creating and adjusting your own actions can be a time-consuming task, and when you achieve a desired result, it s time to save the settings for further usage. This is a power of presets - they allow you to save selected actions/ settings to save time in the future. It s recommended to create a preset for each of your regular task, for instance: uploading your photos to Facebook, creating size-reduced JPEGs, watermarking with your logo etc. Each preset contains: rename settings, image format with its settings and actions. Initially, there are 5 presets by default - they are created just to show how presets can make your workflow easier. To add a new preset, select Save as New Preset in the Presets popup, and enter a preset name. Page 26 of 30
V. Renaming photos You have an opportunity to give your photos meaningful file names without converting them: select photos you want to rename, right click and use the menu Rename. The Rename Settings window appears where you choose settings for the file names with a live preview of those names. Also you can copy or move photos to another folder using the menu File > Copy to Folder and Rename or File > Move to Folder and Rename. Page 27 of 30
VI. The Browser: searching photos, groups PhotoMill has a bunch of features for comfortable browsing and multicriteria search of photos in the Browser. The Browser has 3 panels: Image Info - displays detailed information about a selected photo; Groups - splits photos into groups/subgroups based on a chosen criteria, for instance, by capture dates; Search - gives you an opportunity to search photos by different criteria. To show or hide the Search panel, click the Search button in the toolbar or press Cmd+F (the menu Photos > Search). Page 28 of 30
You can customize criteria for splitting photos in the Groups panel through the Preferences window (use the menu PhotoMill > Preferences to show the window). Page 29 of 30
You can set restrictions for some types of photos to be added to the Browser through the Preferences window by selecting available file types, minimal file size and photo size. Page 30 of 30
