27 Parents Connect Bible Story: God Helped Deborah Lead the People (Judges 4 5:5) Bible Phrase: I will sing praise to the Lord God of Israel (Judges 5:3). Bible Truth: I will praise God because He is my Helper. God s Unfolding Story 1. God created everything. 2. People disobeyed God. 3. God chose a special people. 4. God sent Jesus to help us. 5. Jesus began the Church. 6. Jesus is preparing heaven for us. Unfolding God s Story For Parents There was a time in the Old Testament that God used leaders called judges to lead the people. In this passage we discover how well God provides for His people. This story is of a Judge named Deborah who fearlessly followed God s leadership. Along the way she discovered His provision. Ask, What kind of people does God use to do His work on Earth? (listen to responses and discuss that in the Bible used all kinds of people. Say, Sometimes we only think that men, or big people can be used by God. Listen to today s story to hear the name of the person God used to win the battle. Tell the story. Bible Story God Helped Deborah Lead the People (Judges 4, 5:1-5) The Israelites were living in the land of Canaan, but they were not obeying God s laws. Because of their disobedience, God s people were in trouble. There was a very large army trying to fight them. The army had 900 iron chariots! The Israelites remembered how much God loved them. They prayed and asked God to help them fight. God had chosen a woman named Deborah to be a judge among the people. Deborah loved God, and she often spoke to the people about what God wanted them to do. God gave Deborah a message to give to the commander of the Israelite army. Deborah delivered the message, but the commander at first was too afraid to go and fight. He knew how many chariots they had. He asked Deborah to join him in the effort. Deborah knew God would be with them and help them win. She agreed to go with the commander. The commander gathered his army and met Deborah at the top of a mountain. They could look down the mountain and see all 900 iron chariots, and they were getting closer! Deborah told the commander, Go. God will help you win! The commander obeyed and started down the mountain. Then something amazing happened. God caused a big thunderstorm to occur! It happened so fast and there was so much water that it confused the enemy. The soldiers tried to run, but their chariots got stuck in the mud. God s people were able to win the battle! Deborah and the commander of the army sang a song of praise for the victory God had given them. They sang, I will sing to the LORD; I will sing praise to the LORD God of Israel (Jud. 5:3). Ask, What was the woman s name who lead God s people? (Deborah) Pray thanking God for His provision of help, as we need it. Activity Suggestion Make a Chariot One key element of this story is the enemy had iron chariots. That would have been a great advantage in that day. But God overcame the advantage with rain. Help your preschooler use a shoebox to make a chariot. Cut wheels from the top and cut down the box to resemble a chariot. Let your preschooler glue paper to it and color it. Add toy horses. Enhancement Idea - Use a box large enough for your child to sit in. Let him color pretend wheels on the side of the box. Your preschooler can sit in the box and pretend to be a chariot driver. OT08 Lesson 1

28 Parents Connect Bible Story: God Helped Gideon to be Courageous (Judges 6 7) Bible Phrase: Not by strength or by might, but by My Spirit, says the Lord (Zechariah 4:6). Bible Truth: God will give me courage when I am afraid. God s Unfolding Story 1. God created everything. 2. People disobeyed God. 3. God chose a special people. 4. God sent Jesus to help us. 5. Jesus began the Church. 6. Jesus is preparing heaven for us. Unfolding God s Story for Parents Gideon was another Judge who led the nation of Israel. In this passage we can see how God provides for His people. It was a very dangerous time in Gideon s life and his fears were not without real reason. But though this great example of God s provision and help Gideon and his men saw another mighty act of God. Help your preschooler enjoy the reality of our powerful God through this story. Ask: If you were going to fight a battle would you want a bigger army or a smaller army? Would you want to fight a battle with a sword or a trumpet? Say: God surprised Gideon when he did not think that he could win the battle. God had a plan that would surprise the enemy too! Listen to the story and find out how many men Gideon ended up with in his army. Also listen for what they took with them to fight the battle. Bible Story God Helped Gideon to be Courageous (Judges 6 7) The Israelites had disobeyed God and were being ruled by another king. This was not God s perfect plan for His people, but His people had disobeyed Him. The country that ruled over them destroyed their crops and took their cattle and sheep. The people had become very poor and were living in the caves of the mountains to protect themselves. The Israelites prayed and asked for help. Even though they had disobeyed, God loved them and wanted to help. God s helper would be a young man named Gideon. One day Gideon was outside his home working. Gideon was the youngest boy in his family. An angel of the Lord came and said to Gideon, The Lord is with you, mighty warrior. The angel told him to go and deliver Israel from the enemy, but Gideon did not feel like a warrior at all. He felt afraid. He told the angel he was the youngest of his family and he could not go. The angel told Gideon that God would be with him and he would be able to defeat the enemy. Gideon obeyed, and God helped him to gather an army, but the army was bigger than God thought it should be. God told Gideon to send anyone home who might be too afraid. Lots of men went home. After that, Gideon thought God was ready for them to go to battle, but then God told him he still had too many soldiers. He asked Gideon to take the men to the river to get water. Some men bent down and drank water right from the river; others got some water in their hands and drank it from their hands as a dog would drink water with its tongue. God told Gideon to take only those men who drank from their hands. There were only 300! Gideon was really frightened. How could he win a battle with only 300 men? The enemy had hundreds and hundreds of soldiers. God helped Gideon to not be afraid. He assured him that he would win the battle. What did God have in mind? Gideon and his men would circle the enemy camp during the night carrying torches, jars, and trumpets. When Gideon gave the command, they would blow their trumpets, break their jars, lift their torches, and then shout as loud as they could. When they did these things, the noise and lights confused the men in the enemy camp so much that that they started fighting each other! The Israelites won the battle! God gave Gideon courage, and God caused his army to win. The soldiers did not even bring a sword. Activity Suggestion Make a Trumpet Use an item from around the house like an empty two-liter soda bottle or a water bottle. Cut off the bottom of the bottle. Measure a sheet of paper to cover the bottle. Provide crayons or washable markers to color the sheet before you wrap and tape it to the bottle trumpet. While your preschooler works, talk about the story and how God made the difference in the victory. After the paper is taped around the trumpet show your preschooler how to press his or her lips together and make a motorboat sound. Then press the trumpet to the lips for the trumpet sound. OT08 Lesson 2

29 Parents Connect Bible Story: God Gave Strength to Samson (Judges 13-14) Bible Phrase: God gives strength to His people (Psalm 68:35). Bible Truth: God helps me to be strong to do His work. God s Unfolding Story 1. God created everything. 2. People disobeyed God. 3. God chose a special people. 4. God sent Jesus to help us. 5. Jesus began the Church. 6. Jesus is preparing heaven for us. Unfolding God s Story for Parents As we continue our study of the Old Testament we discover how well God provides for His people. While Samson has long been remembered for his failure, he did lead the nation of Israel for 20 years. Several times it is mentioned that the Spirit of the Lord came upon him. We can all learn from that! Ask, What does it take to be STRONG? (Listen to answers.) Say, This is a story about a man who was very strong, but it was by the power of God Tell the story. Bible Story God Gave Strength to Samson (Judges 13-14) The Israelites had disobeyed God and were being mistreated by the Philistines. It was a hard and difficult time for God s people. During this time, an Israelite couple was also living with a disappointment of their own. They wanted children but were not able to have any. One day God sent an angel to speak to the wife. He told her, You are going to have a son. Through the angel, God told the woman her son would be very special and would help save the Israelites from the Philistines harsh rule. The angel also told the woman, The boy is to serve God from birth as a Nazirite. Do not cut his hair. Nazirites were not to cut their hair. After several months, a baby boy was born, and his mother named him Samson. The couple obeyed God and never cut Samson s hair. As Samson grew up, his hair got longer and longer, and every day he grew stronger! One day when Samson was in a field, a lion came roaring at him, but he was so strong he was able to kill it using only his hands! As Samson grew older, he did not always use his strength the way God intended. One day a Philistine woman talked Samson into telling her about his hair; and that night while Samson slept, she had it cut off! When he awoke he was no stronger than anyone else! Samson was taken to prison and blinded so he could not see, but while he was in prison, his hair grew back and his strength returned! One day the Philistines brought Samson outside, near the temple where they worshiped their false god. There they make fun of him. Samson asked a guard to lead him to some of the temple s tall columns. He asked God to give him special strength and began to push on the columns with all his might. He was so strong the columns began to break, and the temple came crashing down. Many Philistines died, but Samson died too. Still, God had used him to fight the Philistines. Ask, How did God use Samson s strength? (to kill a lion, to fight the Philistines) Ask, What was the symbol of Samson s dedication to God? (his uncut hair.) When did Samson loose his strength? (when his hair was cut.) Comment that all of us can do things that we did not think that we could when we trust in God for our strength. Activity Suggestion Grow Samson s Hair Guide your preschooler to draw Samson s face on a paper cup. Add soil and plant some grass seeds. Keep watered, but not soaked. Over the next week you can watch Samson s hair grow. OT08 Lesson 3

30 Parents Connect Bible Story: God Helped Ruth and Naomi (Ruth 1 4) Bible Phrase: God has plans to care for you (Jeremiah 29:11). Bible Truth: God has plans to care for you. God s Unfolding Story 1. God created everything. 2. People disobeyed God. 3. God chose a special people. 4. God sent Jesus to help us. 5. Jesus began the Church. 6. Jesus is preparing heaven for us. Unfolding God s Story for Parents One of the stories in the Bible that shows kindness and God s provision is that of Ruth caring for her mother in law Naomi. It is beautiful to see God s hand at every stage in this unfolding story. This week ask yourself who needs my help? Your situation is very different from Ruth, but who in your circle of influence needs a kind word, a listening ear, or a helping hand. Help your preschooler see the value of letting God use you to help others. Ask, What some kind things that others have done for you this week? (Listen to answers. Remind of actions by parents and teachers.) Say, There are kind things that all of us can do no matter how big we are. Listen to the story and think about who were the helpers. Tell the story. Bible Story God Helped Ruth and Naomi (Ruth 1-4) Naomi and her family left their Bethlehem home and moved to a place called Moab to find food. The family lived in Moab for ten years, and during that time Naomi s husband and sons died. Hearing that crops were again growing in Bethlehem, Naomi decided to return home. Only Naomi s daughter-inlaw Ruth stayed with her. They were poor and had little food to eat. Naomi had a relative named Boaz who owned a barley field in Bethlehem. Barley is a grain used to make bread. Ruth said to Naomi, Let me go into the barley fields to gather the grain the workers drop, if the owner will allow. Naomi told Ruth, Yes, go gather grain so we can make bread. Ruth went to the field and began to gather grain. She would bend down, pick up grain, and put it in her basket; bend down, pick up grain and put it in the basket. All day Ruth worked hard in the hot sun gathering grain. The owner, Boaz, saw Ruth in the field. He told his workers Leave extra grain for Ruth and watch over her. Boaz talked with Ruth and invited her to lunch. Ruth went home that night with plenty of grain, and she even brought Naomi some of her lunch she had saved. Now Ruth and Naomi would have food to eat. Ruth gathered grain each day, and Boaz was always kind to her and happy to see her. One day, Boaz asked Ruth to be his wife. After they were married, God gave them a son. They named their son Obed. Naomi helped Ruth and Boaz take care of baby Obed, who became the grandfather of King David. God took care of Ruth and Naomi. He gave them food to eat and a family to love. Ask, Who were kind helpers? (Ruth, Boaz, the workers) Who are people that need our help? (Preschoolers can bring canned food to help the hungry at the church food bank.) Pray, together for those who need our help. God provides to us so we can help others. Activity Suggestion Decorate a Food Bag (or Box) Choose a paper bag or a box. Provide construction paper, glue, crayons, ribbon and anything else to decorate the bag or box. Help your preschool cut, color, glue pictures to the bag. Help write today s Bible Phrase on the bag. Add canned goods and bring to church. OT08 Lesson 4
