2 The Organization 1 in 5 children live in households that struggle to put food on the table. That s more than 16 million children who struggle every day with hunger. Hungry children are more likely to miss school, earn lower grades, and even not to graduate from high school. Share Our Strength s No Kid Hungry campaign strives to end childhood hunger in America by ensuring all children get the healthy food they need every day. Share Our Strength connects kids with meal programs where they live, learn, and play working with families, schools, and both the public and private sectors to make ending childhood hunger a national priority. Share Our Strength began in the basement of a row house on Capitol Hill in 1984, in response to the famine in Ethiopia. Brother and sister Bill and Debbie Shore founded the organization with the belief that everyone has a way to help in the global fight against hunger and poverty, and that in these shared strengths lie sustainable solutions. Today the organization focuses these strengths on making No Kid Hungry a reality in America. Share Our Strength sees a future in which kids get healthy, affordable meals at home, get a healthy breakfast every day at school so they re ready to learn, and don t have to worry about how they re going to eat when school is out for the summer and the safety net of school meals isn t available. The No Kid Hungry Campaign is achieving incredible success. Since its launch, Share Our Strength has helped connect kids in need to 107 million additional meals, and that s just getting started. A $50 million organization today, Share Our Strength s goal is to increase its size to at least $100 million within the next 5 years. 2

Tremendous Record The Director of Development will join a marketing and fundraising program that has experienced dramatic growth. Fueling that growth is a multi-platform, year-round cause marketing campaign that raises awareness, generates revenue, and rallies a national movement in support of the issue of childhood hunger. This campaign includes a multi-city culinary event series, grassroots engagement opportunities, a national Dine Out month, a dynamic social media community, and a 6- years-and-growing partnership with the Food Network. Share Our Strength s many other corporate partners include some of the nation s most prominent brands and media outlets, such as Citibank, Walmart, the Arby s Foundation, Grub Hub, the National Restaurant Association, Uber, Williams Sonoma, JC Penney, and many more. Hundreds of top chefs and culinary professionals have joined the cause, and a growing community of over 700,000 individuals have taken the No Kid Hungry pledge since the campaign s launch in No Kid Hungry events around the country Enormous Potential While Share Our Strength has achieved great success in cause marketing, corporate partnerships, and a national roster of special events, it has equal room for growth in its major donor program. The Executive Team has designated the expansion of that program as a key element of the effort to feed millions of kids still in need. The Team is engaged in and supportive of that expansion. The broader Share Our Strength staff, including 200 people overall and 68 in development, is highly motivated by the mission to feed kids across the country. Over the last 30 years, Share Our Strength has created a culture focused on making a significant difference in children s lives. It encourages innovation, promotes collaboration with external partners and fellow colleagues, and provides opportunities for team members to develop their careers in a dynamic, continually evolving organization that frequently develops industry best practices. 3

4 The Responsibilities In a newly created position, the Director of Development will report to the Senior Director of Development (who in turn reports to the Chief Revenue and Marketing Officer) and will be responsible for an initial fundraising goal of $12 million, including Major Gifts ($4.8 million) and culinary events ($7.2 million). The Director s ultimate goal will be to increase total giving in these areas to a minimum of $15 million over two years and to build to $25 million over the next five years. The Director will manage a staff of six fundraising professionals, a writer, an assistant, and three development consultants. They will look to the Director to provide the strategy for leading Share Our Strength s 5 major fundraising markets: New York, the Northeast, the Mid-Atlantic, California, and the National. Each Market has a comprehensive fundraising program with an emphasis on developing individual major gifts and executing highly successful culinary events. Specific responsibilities include: Serve as a cross-team resource for Development, assisting with donor and sponsor relationships and associated activities (e.g., proposals, contract review, meetings, etc.). Work with the Senior Director of Development to create and execute a 3-5 year plan to diversify and increase revenue from existing and new major donors. Manage and lead a team of fundraising professionals in a matrix reporting structure with the Director of Culinary Events. Management duties include recruiting and supervising staff, coordinating team workflow and priorities, preparing and monitoring the department's revenue pipeline and expense budget, and coordinating the team's collaboration with other departments. Develop metrics to monitor team performance against goals. Manage development and execution of major donor solicitation and stewardship strategies for the executive team, members of the Board of Directors, the No Kid Hungry Leadership Council, event host committee members, and other executive-level volunteers and senior staff members. Lead execution of individual major donor identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities. Develop strategies with Culinary Events leadership to most effectively handle event execution to maximize fundraising as well as a lens of developing major donors and prospects in existing and new markets. Serve as a member of Share Our Strength's senior leadership team and represent the individual Major Gifts teams on cross-functional internal working groups. Represent Share Our Strength at organizational and external events as appropriate. This may include, but is not limited to, donor and prospect meetings, cultivation events, dinners and galas, professional industry gatherings, and speaking engagements. 4

5 The Candidate The successful Director of Development will combine sharp strategic marketing and fundraising skills with a sophisticated knowledge of complex national organizations and staff structures. S/he will have a record of successfully building major gift programs and of engaging in effective cultivation and solicitation at the national level, and will understand the use of fundraising initiatives as part of an integrated marketing program. At the same time, s/he will be able to marshal his or her expertise to provide strong central leadership and mentorship for a network of fundraising staff across the country. The Director will be able to evaluate and build regional strategies and staff, to lead teams around the country in ambitious experiments and in the collection and evaluation of data to assess them, and to do all of this work while balancing regional and national demands. Knowledge and Experience Bachelor s degree required; Master s degree preferred. At least 10 years of experience soliciting and securing major and principal gifts from individuals. Record of developing and implementing innovative fundraising strategies, including demonstrated success building and expanding a robust major gifts program. Proven ability to manage a high-performing team; minimum of 3 years of direct management experience of major gifts officers/fundraising professionals. Outstanding analytical, strategic planning, budgeting, and organizational skills. Demonstrated ability to manage multi-faceted projects and a capacity to perform well independently in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment. Successful experience working in a national or large regional organization. Demonstrated ability to engage and influence diverse audiences, to build long-term relationships, and to leverage executive staff and volunteers to achieve fundraising success. Exceptional communication skills, including formal presentations and proposal writing. Strong knowledge of the drivers of donors philanthropic decision-making. Conversant in issues associated with childhood hunger and programs to feed kids. Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with fundraising database. Attributes Enjoyment of and agile skill in leadership, with the ability to build, motivate, and mentor complex and highly effective teams. Willingness to listen and learn from others. Mission-driven orientation, with an understanding of the big picture, an ability to easily translate objectives into community impact, and a commitment to aligning the highest level of donor service with the needs and directions of the organization. Strong business acumen; able to craft fundraising strategies and to use resources wisely. Ability to become quickly knowledgeable about Share Our Strength s programs and to have an articulate conversation about their attributes with donors. Flexibility in the face of changing priorities and a fluid environment; able to distinguish between what is a priority and what is urgent. 5
