4 ii PREFACE This Standard was prepared by the Joint Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand Committee IT-012, Information Security to supersede HB 231:2004, Information security risk management guidelines. The objective of this Standard is to endorse this important Standard as applicable for Australian use. This Standard is an adoption with national modifications and has been reproduced from ISO/IEC 27005:2011, Information technology Security techniques Information security risk management and has been varied as indicated to take account of Australian/New Zealand conditions. The modifications are specified in Appendix ZZ. This Standard contains all the normative requirements of ISO/IEC 27005:2011. It differs from ISO/IEC 27005:2011 as follows: (a) Informative Annex E (Information security risk assessment approaches) has been removed from the source text because the Committee considers that it is potentially misleading. Appendix ZZ specifies a replacement Annex E in which more comprehensive guidance on the topic of risk assessment is indicated by reference to IEC/ISO (b) Consequential editorial changes have been made consistent with the deletion of Annex E. As this Standard is reproduced from an International Standard, the following applies: (i) Its number appears on the cover and title page while the International Standard number appears only on the cover. (ii) In the source text this International Standard should read this Australian/New Zealand Standard. (iii) A full point substitutes for a comma when referring to a decimal marker. 7 ISO/IEC 27005:2011(E) AS/NZS ISO/IEC 27005:2012 v Introduction INTRODUCTION This International Standard provides guidelines for information security risk management in an organization, supporting in particular the requirements of an information security management (ISMS) according to ISO/IEC However, this International Standard does not provide any specific method for information security risk management. It is up to the organization to define their approach to risk management, depending for example on the scope of the ISMS, context of risk management, or industry sector. A number of existing methodologies can be used under the framework described in this International Standard to implement the requirements of an ISMS. This International Standard supports the general concepts specified in ISO/IEC and is designed to assist the satisfactory implementation of information security based on a risk management approach. Knowledge of the concepts, models, processes and terminologies described in ISO/IEC and ISO/IEC is important for a complete understanding of this International Standard. This International Standard is applicable to all types of organizations (e.g. commercial enterprises, government agencies, non-profit organizations) which intend to manage risks that could compromise the organization s information security. 2 Normative references The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document.
