1 UNIVERSITÀ DEGLI STUDI DI CAGLIARI SUMMER SCHOOL IN CAGLIARI STUDYING ITALIAN IN A MEDITERRANEAN UNIVERSITY 1 Why to choose Cagliari? Located in the center of the Gulf of the Angels, which is on the south coast of Sardinia, Cagliari is the main cultural center of Sardinia, and the most populated one. While walking through the old historic districts of the city you will be able to recognize easily the traces of various civilizations and conquerors, who throughout the centuries have lived in Cagliari. Numerous archaeological sites and unspoiled natural environment allow you to choose between both fascinating and interesting tourists routes of art and nature. Thanks to its mild climate, in every season, Cagliari offers the opportunity to discover its architecture, its archaeological sites, its monuments and its ancient history and the opportunity to observe the influences of the various people who were residents of the city. Cagliari is a medium-sized city, as well as our university: we have six faculties and about 30,000 students, what makes the University of Cagliari a student-oriented place. Tuition fees, being among the lowest in Italy, are accessible to everyone. There are many fields of studies that you can choose ranging from archeology to marine biology, from pharmacology to economy and political studies and law, from architecture and engineering to foreign languages and literature, and much more. What is the climate in Cagliari? The winter is short and mild and, thanks to the fact that the city is situated by the sea, a climate of Cagliari is generally mild. The sky is usually clear and blue and spring seems to extend beyond its natural time. The average summer temperature is C (74 F), while winter is C (54 F). High levels of humidity characterize the local climate but, fortunately, the summer heat and humidity of winter are mitigated by an almost constant breeze which, however, can turn into a strong wind. What is more the Mistral wind reduces any comparisons between Sardinian and tropical climate. Cagliari is the 'City of the Sun' but above all the City of the Sea. The bathing season extends from May to

2 October but it is not difficult to find brave swimmers even in March or November. From the hills of the city you can admire the colorful sea that joins the city, creating a unique landscape. Cagliari has a lot to offer to its visitors who want to enjoy the sun, the sea and the nature as well as the opportunity to meet a rich and fascinating culture. In spring and summer you can enjoy some of the most beautiful beaches and seas in the world and you have the opportunity to discover unspoiled natural environment. ITALIAN LANGUAGE AND LABORATORIES Notice that the realization of the courses depends on the registration of at least 20 students!!!! Italian language courses are organized by the Language Centre of the University of Cagliari and by the ISMOKA. The participants will develop the important language skills and improve their communication in Italian. These courses are designed in a way that every aspect of the language is involved: grammar, phonetics and vocabulary; and to develop the ability of reading, writing, listening and speaking. All of the professors are qualified native Italian speakers with the knowledge of both traditional and modern teaching methods. Carefully selected materials will be used in the class in order to provide participants with information about Italian culture and society and at the same time allow them to develop language and their communication skills. DATE Students have the opportunity to choose from the following dates: From 1 st to 12 th July From 15 th to 26 th July From 2 nd to 13 th September From16 th to27 th September THE COURSES ARE AVAILABLE FOR THE FOLLOWING LEVELS: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 2

3 The courses consist of 40 hours in total. They take place from 09:00 to 13:00 every morning, from Monday to Friday. The Italian course consists of: Grammar analysis Understanding written texts Listening Vocabulary Pronunciation Oral skills GRAMMAR COURSE From Monday to Friday 9:00-13:00 20 hours per week (for 2 weeks), 40 hours of the lessons in total The courses are organized by the Language Centre and its professional teachers who are appropriately selected every three years and they are specialized in teaching Italian as a foreign language. Our summer courses consist of the two sessions: 1. The first session focuses on grammar and lexical analysis and practice with successive exercises 2. The second session focuses on conversation and writing practice in order to encourage students to use the grammar rules correctly for the communication in everyday life. By speaking, listening and writing in Italian only, the students will learn how to use the language with growing confidence and skills. We will be very careful preparing the tasks and we will encourage interaction in the classroom. Students will be encouraged to talk to each other in the class- in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Media will also be used to teach: audio-visual materials, recordings, films, newspapers, magazines etc The student material will be completed by using the course book, brochures and exercises created specifically for each course and taking into account the needs of the students. 3

4 Notice that during the lessons Italian language will be used and the students will be encouraged to use the Italian language as much as possible. OTHER FEATURES Every week students will be able to practice Italian in everyday life, such as at the bar, in the shops and museums. Students who successfully complete the course will be given a certificate. It states the name of the attended course, the number of hours and the level accomplished referring to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL). It is necessary to attend at least 80% of lessons to obtain the certificate. CULTURAL COURSE For those who want to, apart from the grammar, discover also the Sardinian culture they can follow the activity of gastronomy and traditions (with a laboratory of cinema and music) that they are offered from the association Sapori di Sardegna in a really reasonable price. If the deadline cannot be met, please contact our office. The courses will be organised only in case when every class has at least 20 students. Until the end of May all of the students that have applied will be informed whether the courses will officially start or not. 4

5 REQUIREMENTS There are no specific requirements. The program is open to participants who are at least 18 years old, from all over the world, who study in one of the university partners of the University of Cagliari and/or students who want to study at the University of Cagliari (prospective students, Erasmus students...). Please contact our office for the information. ACADEMIC CREDITS TRANSFER Participants are required to contact the Foreign Study Advisor or the Italian Language Department of their home University to ask about the credit transfer procedure. Information about the total number of lesson hours and the course content should also be given for this purpose. ACCIDENT INSURANCE The cost of the program includes Accident Insurance which covers students for accidents that may occur during any activities related to the Italian Language Summer School. Participants are insured for the duration of the course. VISA Non EU - citizens must contact the nearest Italian Consulate or Embassy to obtain information regarding visas. COST The total cost of the course 50,00 (accommodation excluded) and it includes: Placement Test Lessons, Access to University Services Registration and Enrollment Fees Welcome Pack Accident Insurance Certificate and Transcript of Records 5

6 ACCOMMODATION Participants who have trouble finding accommodation can ask the ESN staff ). ESN staff will be happy to help you with all your needs. Cagliari offers a wide range of accommodation, for example hotels, B&Bs, hostels or private apartments. 6

7 HOW TO APPLY Whoever wants to participate in the Italian courses must complete and send the application form on the following address It is necessary to send: 1. The application form (you have to complete it online and send us the copy). 2. A photocopy of the ID document or of the passport; 3. A photocopy of the payment. HOW TO REACH CAGLIARI It is very easy to get to Cagliari by plane or ferry. It has good links with the main European capital cities (London, Paris, Barcelona, Madrid etc.) Cagliari Elmas airport is located about 8 Km from Cagliari s main centre. An airport transport service is guaranteed by the ARST Bus service every 30 minutes. Alghero Fertilia Airport is located about 6 Km from Alghero s main centre and the Logudoro bus service will easily take you to Cagliari. The ferry runs daily from Civitavecchia to Cagliari, twice a week to Napoli, and once a week to Palermo, Trapani and Tunisia.
