2 NATICK SOCCER CLUB PRINCIPLES OF PLAY NATICK Natick players showcase sportsmanship and fair play at all times. ATTACK-MINDED Natick players play the game with flair, creativity and without fear. TECHNICAL Natick players are comfortable in possession and execute moves under pressure. INTELLIGENT Natick players are thoughtful about the game and will develop game intelligence and aspire to be students of the game CONFIDENT Natick teams are made up of confident players. This confidence comes from self-belief, hard work, repetition and team camaraderie, all instilled in a positive coaching environment. KEEP POSSESSION Natick players play an indirect style of soccer but have an awareness of the most appropriate penetrating pass.

3 NATICK SESSION METHODOLOGY SESSION STRUCTURE FOR NATICK All sessions will be 45minutes long, focussing on one topic and the technical skills required. Sessions will follow the structure: TECHNICAL WARM UP (unopposed) - 15 MINUTES TECHNICAL PRACTICE (opposed)- 15 MINUTES TECHNICAL PRACTICE (1v1 - Game play) - 15 MINUTES KEY PLAYER MOVEMENT WITH THE BALL PLAYER MOVEMENT WITHOUT THE BALL MOVEMENT OF THE BALL (PASS / SHOT)

5 WEEK ONE: Dribbling - Foot Skills WARM UP (15mins): Foot Skills Challenge Create a 20x20 square divided into quarters. Set a foot skills challenge in each square and a time limit to try and complete challenge. Can the group beat the clock and complete all 4 boxes in 1 minute. 10 Toe Taps 10 Foundations 10 Scissors 10 inside/outside touches Each challenge now becomes on the move so players are moving around the area performing the challenge Change challenges : Get into a rhythm Keep ball close TECHNICAL (15mins): Ocean & Desert Create 3 10x20 yard channels. In the two outside channels randomly place some cones. Each player has a ball and starts at one end of the central channel (ocean). Players must dribble their ball over the ocean weaving side to side over the waves. Once at the top players can dribble back down either desert being careful not to hit any cactus. Challenge players to use different parts of their feet. (inside, outside & Sole) Add a defender in the middle channel (shark) The shark will hold a ball in their hands and must try and touch players soccer balls with their own ball. Shark gets one point for each ball eaten. Players get a point each time they swim the ocean and cross the desert. : Keep ball close to feet Head up for awareness Use different parts of the foot TECHNICAL (15mins) 1v1 3 goal game ORGANIZATION Create a 25x20 yard area. On the longer sides of the area place three 3 yard wide goals. Split into two teams who start either side of the coach. First player from each team will run around the area through the first goal on coach s command. Coach will pass the ball into one of the players. Player tries to beat defender and dribble ball through a goal. If defender wins ball they try dribble through three goals on opposite side. Give each set of goals a number 1,2 or 3. Coach calls a number and players must run through that number goal before ball is passed into area. 2v2 3v3 Positivity Dribble at speed Head up to find spare gate Turn an attack other gate if defender blocks space

6 WEEK TWO: Dribbling At Speed Technical Warm Up (15mins): Dribbling with SAQ Create 5x10 yard channels with SAQ exercise either side Each player has a ball and dribbles the ball to the opposite side of the channel and stops the ball on the end line. Each player now moves up into the next channel and dribbles a new ball across to the opposite end line and repeats. The pair at the top channel move through the SAQ exercise and back to the first channel to repeat the circuit. TECHNICAL (15mins): Ball Steal 20x20 yard area with 5 yard end zones. Split players into two teams, 1 team in each end zone. Each player has a ball. When coach shouts go each player leaves their ball and goes and steals a ball from the other teams zone and dribbles it back to their own zone. Team with most balls in their zone after 2 mins wins. Vary SAQ exercise Switch balls halfway in each channel before stopping ball on end line Dribble to keep the ball close Different parts of the foot to move the ball Accelerate away Can only steal ball out of zone with sole of foot : Keep ball close to feet Head up for awareness Use sole of the foot to stop ball and turning TECHNICAL (15mins): Dribbling Set out 2 cones in a line 10 yards apart. Split into 2 groups, 1 team in each end zone Players dribble around their zone until coach shouts NASCAR. Players then look to dribble into other end zone as quickly as possible. First team to get into new zone gets 1 point. Use other foot Use both feet Relay Race Speedway Game : Keep ball close to feet Head up for awareness

7 WEEK THREE: Turning WARM UP (15mins): Racing Drivers 25x25 yard area. Give each player 2 cones and have them make a mini goal anywhere inside the area. Players race their car (dribble the ball) inside the area through as many gates as possible creating their own race track. Turn back through each goal you go through using sole of foot. Figure of 8 through each gate. Keep ball close and within reach of feet Head up to see where your going Accelerate once through a goal TECHNICAL (15mins): Reaction Turning Create two 5x15 yard end zones 20 yards apart with a central line splitting the two. Players all stand on the central line with a ball. Coach will call out a colour. Players must dribble the ball into that colour zone, perform a turn and return to the middle line Red line = left foot turn Yellow line = right foot turn Play opposites Red = Yellow zone, Yellow = Red Zone Competition - Last player back to middle line performs a toe taps for the duration of the next race. Dribble to keep the ball close Use sole of foot to stop the ball Step other side of the ball Turn and use laces to push ball in front Accelerate into space TECHNICAL (15mins) - 1v1 3 goal game 10x12 yard area with goals on 3 sides Have one team start on the corner of the area and another team starting centrally on the side with no goals. Team on the corner pass the ball in to opposite team and move into defend. Attacker can score in any of the three goals. If defender wins possession they can score in any goal. Play 2v2 Attack open goal Turn and attack another goal if defender block a goal

8 WEEK FOUR: Dribbling With Change of Direction TECHNICAL WARM UP (15mins): Dribbling 20x5 yard channels Split players evenly on outside cones with a ball at each cone. Players dribble to opposite cone and stop ball for next player. Turn at half way and pass ball back. Dribble around the cone and back. Stop ball at central cone, switch balls and continue to opposiite cone Stop ball at central cone, switch balls and turn back to start cone. Dribble to keep the ball close Different parts of the foot to move the ball Accelerate away TECHNICAL (15mins): Straight Lines v Zig Zags 10x15 yard area with cones along the width of the area Split onto two teams. Reds start on the short side, whites start on the long side. The red team must dribble their ball from east to west. White team dribble north to south but must zig zag the dribble. Start players on all sides with same rules Switch team sides. Add a defender in the area who tries to touch the top of any ball with the sole of their foot. 1 Point for each ball touched. Attackers 1 point for every successful dribble to the other side. TECHNICAL (15mins): Dribbling with pressure 20x30 yard area with 2 goals. Place a cone 15 yards from each goal. 2 even teams to the right hand side of each goal. Player 1 dribbles past the cone to shoot for the goal opposite. As soon as the shot has been struck, player 2 from the next team dribbles to the goal opposite. Player 1 then must try and recover and prevent player 2 from shooting. As player 2 shoots, player 3 will go and player 2 will chase. Process repeats Once player has had shot they must chase next player entering the game Switch teams to other side of goal to use left foot M.O.D.E - Movement- first touch to allow shot - Observe - goal keeper position - Decision - where and how to shoot

9 WEEK FIVE: Dribbling With Moves TECHNICAL WARM UP (15mins): Box Tag 25x25 yard area with 3x3 boxes inside the area Each player has a ball and dribbles around inside the area and through as many squares as possible. Only 1 person in a square at a time. How many squares can you go through in 1 minute 5 toe taps/foundations in each box Players must turn change direction inside the square Player must turn left or right inside the box Player must come out same side of the box they went in through Dribble to keep the ball close Different parts of the foot to move the ball Accelerate away TECHNICAL (15mins): Box to Box 25x25 yard area with 3x3 boxes inside the area Add 1 player as a tagger who can not go into the squares. If tagged player must freeze on the spot until high 5 d by another player to be free. Tagger holds the ball in one hand to leave a spare tagging hand Boxes are safe zones for 5 seconds. Add 2 defenders Dribble to keep the ball close Different parts of the foot to move the ball Accelerate away TECHNICAL (15mins): 1v1 moves ORGANIZATION Create 2 10x20 yard channels with goals on half way Have 4 equal teams lined up as shown. White team pass ball across to red. Red player moves into the area looking to escape out either side goal for 1 point or get to opposite line for 3 points. If defender steal the ball they try and escape or get to end line. Have groups work with groups diagonally opposite. Competition - First team to get to 10 points : Attack at speed Change of direction Change of speed once past defender 2

10 WEEK SIX:1v1moves WARM UP (15mins): Dribbling - Change of speed Create a 20x20 yard square with 15x15 square inside. Each player has a ball and dribbles in the outside square. When a player enters the middle square they must perform 3 moves before going back to the larger square. Add defender to the middle square who must try and touch the top of any ball with the bottom of their foot. Attackers must try and perform 3 moves in the middle square without defender touching their ball. 1 point for every 3 moves. Defender gains 1 point for every touch of a ball with sole of foot. : Keep ball close Inside/outside/sole of foot to manipulate ball TECHNICAL (15mins): 1v1 moves Create a 15x15 yard square. In each corner place a 2 yard wide goal. Each player has a ball. The players in opposite lines dribble the ball towards each other. Just before the players crash they must change direction to the right and dribble to the opposite line. How close can they get before they change direction. Can player use a move to change direction Red team have a ball each. First plater dribbles ball into play and tries to get ball through white team goal. One white player enters game and tries to win possession to score in red team goal. : Attack at speed Change of direction Change of speed once past defender TECHNICAL (15mins): Shooting Speed Race 10x15 yard area with goal. SPlit into two teams, 5 yards from each goal post. Coach s starts opposite the goal. On coaches command first player from each line races out to the opposite cone through the central gate to try and be first to a ball passed into the area by the coach. Player who scores gets point for their team. Throw ball in the air into the game Number each player from each team. : Attack at speed Change of direction Change of speed once past defender

11 WEEK SEVEN: Passing TECHNICAL WARM UP (15mins): Passing Create 2 5 yard goals 10 yards aprat with cones set out as shown Split players into two teams starting on cones opposite small goals. First player from each line dribbles a ball towards the small goal. Once through the goal they pass to the next line and join that line. Both lines work at the same time. Toe Taps to the goal Foundations to the goal HAve a player standing in each gate. Player pass the ball into target player who sets ball back to then be passed to next group. : Keep ball close Head up to look for pass Weight and accuracy of pass TECHNICAL (15mins): Passing Triangles Create two 10x10x10 yard triangles merged together Split players into even teams on each cone. Blue team work together and yellow team work together. Each team has one ball. First player with the ball dribbles to the cone to the left and leaves the ball for the next player. Players now pass the ball to the next cone and follow pass Players combine to play 1-2 around the cone. Dribble to keep the ball close Different parts of the foot to move the ball Weight & Accuracy of pass TECHNICAL (15mins) - Passing to Shoot 15x20 yard area with cones set out as shown Red player dribbles the ball towards the gate and passes ball through to white. White takes positive touch and tries to score. Red runs around the cone and tries to stop shot on goal. Progression 2v1 for attackers who must make 1 pass before shooting Coaching Points Close control when dribbling Weight and accuray of pass M.O.D.E - Movement- first touch to allow shot - Observe - goal keeper position - Decision - where and how to shoot - Execute - correct technique to shoot

12 WEEK EIGHT: Passing & Receiving Technical Warm Up (15mins): Ball Control, Passing & Dribbling Create two 10x10 squares with one corner from each square overlapping. Square 1 (red team) must pass the ball around the outside of the square. Player must check off the cone before receiving. Square 2 (white team) must dribble ball towards next cone. As player is dribbling, next player spins around the cone to receive a pass into space. Squares overlap to make session semi opposed and cause traffic for players to deal with. Switch direction of play Competition - 1 point for each complete square with no mistake. Switch team tasks : Quality, wieght and accuracy of pass A,B,C - Awareness, body shape & control Speed & control when dribbling 3 1 Technical (15mins) - Passing & Receiving 25x25x25 yard triangle with 5 yard gate central on each side Split players evenly on corner cones with one player in each gate. Player 1 on each cone passes to player 2. Player 2 receives to turn and pass to player 3 on next cone. Players follow their pass each time. Coaching Points: A,B,C - Awareness, Body Shape, Control Weight and accuracy of passing Progression Switch direction of play Player 2 checks to outside of gate to receive and passes to player 3. Player must start centrally in gate and check to outside of triangle. P1 passes to P2. P2 sets back to P1 who passes through gate to P3. P1 becomes P2 and P2 joins next line. As above but now P2 joins the group they are facing when they check out to the side. Player will have to run through practice being aware of traffic Technical (15mins): Random Attacking Game 22x44 yard area with a goal at each end. Split into two teams with each team starting in opposite corners of the area. Coach will choose four colours. (Red, Blue, Orange, Yellow) Each team must associate a colour with a number (e.g... red = 3) They will not tell the other team which colour they associate with which number, meaning both teams should be different. Mix up colour and number combinations. : Take advantage of extra players Attack at speed Shots on target 3 2 1

13 WEEK NINE: Receiving Skills TECHNICAL WARM UP(15mins) - Receiving Skills 25x25 yard area with 4 corner goals & 5 yard gate in centre Split into two teams lined up centrally between each set of goals. One team start with the balls. First player in team without balls runs into the centre through the gate. As player reaches gate ball is passed in. Player receives to turn and dribbles through a corner goal and back to thier team. should them be with other team to repeat exercise. Receiving player can turn to either goal and dribble through. The passer must now try and run through the other goal before the receiver gets through the goal they turn too. Winner gets a point for their team. Passer now chases receiver and tries to tag them before they dribble through a goal Change of speed or direction to beat defender Use a move to beat defender 2 TECHNICAL (15mins): Receiving under pressure 25x25 yard area with 4 corner goals & 5 yard gate in centre Have two teams lined up side by side centrally between the goals. The attacker will start the practice. As soon as the attacker runs for the gate, the defender can follow. Attacker receives a pass from the coach tries to receive the ball and turn to dribble through either goal. Defender can t tackle until attacker has taken a touch. If defender wins the ball they can attack other two goals. TECHNICAL (15mins) - Receiving Game ORGANIZATION 70x50 yard area with 10 yard central channel Both teams play Players are restricted to the half they start in. A player must drop into central zone to receive a pass to turn and play into attacking zone. Make team competition : Check shoulder before receiving Take touch into space Disguise Check team mate is ready to receive pass Communication - Verbal or visual Move off ball to create opportunity to receive pass.

14 WEEK TEN: Shooting TECHNICAL WARM UP (15mins): Squashers & Shooters 15x30 area split into three 10x15 channels Player 1 dribbles to opposite red cone. As player 1 is dribbling player 2 calls out squash At this point player 1 stops the ball with sole of foot (squashes the ball) and player 2 runs in to shoot first time to goal. Rotate groups Competition: Shooters v GK Shooters 1 point for each goal GK 1 point for each save Dribble to keep the ball close Different parts of the foot to move the ball Accelerate away Technical (15mins) - Dribbling, Passing & Control 10x20 Yard area. Set out 3 sets of cones 10 yards apart every 10 yards from the goal. Have a player standing in between each set of cones. Player 1 starts with the ball. Player 3 will move to the left or right. Player 2 reacts off this movement and moves in the opposite direction (shown by blue arrows) P1 passes into P3. P3 sets the ball off for P2 to shoot for goal. P3 follows in shot. Players move forward to next set of cones and P3 joins back of line. Players must start centrally for each go. TECHNICAL (15mins): Shooting Speed Race 10x15 yard area with goal. Split into two teams, 5 yards from each goal post. Coach s starts opposite the goal. On coaches command first player from each line races out to the opposite cone through the central gate to try and be first to a ball passed into the area by the coach.
