1 Crafty Catch-All Door Hanger Keep your sewing room organized with a homemade door hanger! A variety of small and large pockets keep all your sewing necessities organized, while bright embroidery and fun fabrics and accents add a colorful and crafty look. Project Needs & Notes - 5/8 yard solid-colored lightweight canvas for front and back of large pockets - 1 yard solid-colored twill for front of large pockets and back of hanger - 3/4 yard print cotton fabric for front - 1/4 yard print cotton fabric for small pockets - Medium weight (2.5-3 ounce) cutaway stabilizer - Temporary spray adhesive (like Gunold KK100) - Air-erase pen for marking - 4 3/4 yards extra-wide double-fold bias tape - Fabric glue - 2 tape measures for decorative trim - 1 small pin cushion and permanent self adhesive Velcro tabs - Nylon monofilament thread - 3 one-inch grommets and grommet tool for hangers - Cutting pad and craft knife Designs used in this tutorial are from X11325, A Crafty Words of Wisdom Design Pack. 2 For the Love of Craft Lookbook Begin by preparing the front fabric of the large pockets. Using an air-erase pen, draw a 10" x 10" square on a piece of lightweight canvas. A template, or printout of a design, is an excellent tool to help with placement. Print a template of the design from your embroidery software. If you do not have embroidery software, Wilcom's TrueSizer is a free program to use. Place the template so that the center is in the center of the square. There should be at least 1" of space between the edges of the design and the edges of the square. Mark the center point as well as the vertical and horizontal axis lines. Hoop the fabric with a piece of medium-weight cutaway stabilizer, lining up the marks on the fabric with the marks on the hoop. Attach the hoop to the machine and load the design. Move the hoop so that the needle

3 is right over the center point on the fabric. Embroider the design. After embroidering, trim the excess stabilizer away from the back. Repeat these steps for a total of four embroidered pieces. In this example, two different colors of lightweight canvas are used, so feel free to mix and match color selections and designs. Cut out the squares. Lay the right pocket piece flat with the right side facing up. Align the left pocket piece on top, right sides together. Pin in place along the left side. Sew a 1/2" seam along the pinned edge only. Press the back seam open with an iron.

4 Assemble both sets of the pocket pieces together like you did earlier. To prepare the fabric for the back of the pockets, place the assembled front piece on top of the fabric, wrong sides together. Pin in place, and cut around the shape of the front pieces. Wrap bias tape around the top edge of the pockets. Pin in place, and sew a seam along the inner edge of the tape. Sew a 1/8" seam along the side and bottom edges of the pockets to tack the front and back layers together. Cut a piece of measuring tape to the length of the top edge of the pockets. Also, trim off any metal ends. Add fabric glue to the back of the measuring tape and press it in place along the top edge of the pockets so that it slightly overlaps the bottom edge of the bias tape. Using nylon monofilament in the needle, sew a seam across the measuring tape to secure it in place. To prepare the small pocket section, cut pieces of print cotton fabric and lightweight canvas to 19 1/2" x 6". Align the two pieces together, wrong sides together. Pin in place. Wrap bias tape around the top edge of the fabric. Pin in place. Sew a seam along the inner edge of the tape. Sew a 1/8" seam along the side

5 and bottom edges of the fabric. To prepare the front and back of the hanger, cut a piece of print cotton fabric for the front, and a piece of twill for the back. Cut the fabric to 19 1/2" x 35". Align the two pieces together, wrong sides together. Pin in place. Sew a 1/8" seam along the entire outer edge of the fabric. Lay the assembled front and back piece flat with the front side (print fabric side) facing up. Align one of the large pocket sections along the bottom edge of the fabric and pin in place. Place the small pocket section with the bottom edge 3" up from the top edge of the bottom large pockets and pin in place. Place the remaining large pocket section with the bottom edge 3" up from the top edge of the small pocket section. Pin in place.

6 To create the pocket separations in the large pockets, sew a seam along the existing seam in between each section. To create the pocket separations in the small pocket section, measure and mark the center of the top edge of the pocket by measuring and dividing by two. Measure out 4 3/4" from the center mark and sew a seam starting at each mark and ending at the bottom of the pocket. Cut two more pieces of the measuring tape to the length of the bottom of the pockets. Add the measuring tape over the edges of the bottom of the top pocket section and the middle pocket section just as you did earlier. Wrap bias tape around the entire outer edge of the hanger. Pin in place. Sew a seam along the inner edge of the tape To add the hangers, measure and mark 1" down from the top edge of the hanger in the center and at each top corner. Using a craft knife and cutting pad, cut an "x" at each mark and then add a grommet through each hole.

7 For the finishing touch, add a pin cushion to the door hanger. Place it at the center seam of the top pocket section, about 1" from the bottom edges. Place the loop side of the Velcro tab on the bottom of the pin cushion. Add the hook side of the tab to the hanger where you want the pin cushion attached. Make this crafty catch-all and keep your sewing room nice and neat. The pockets are just the right size to hold everything from magazines to fabric, stabilizer to scissors, and everything inbetween!
