However, fall in daily arrivals in major spot markets may limit sharp drop in prices. As well, jeera stocks in the NCDEX accredited warehouse declined to tonnes as on 07 th July from tonnes reported previous day. Shipments of the second largest exported spice, jeera, rose 28 percent on year to tonnes in (Apr-Mar), according to the latest data released by the Spices Board of India. As per market source, India s jeera production is estimated at 284 thousand tonnes against 402 thousand tonnes in Area sown under jeera cultivation for the current crop year ( ) was around 570 thousand ha against the sown acreage of 804 thousand ha. Reports of higher turmeric acreage this year due to favourable weather may too add to the weak sentiment. As per market source, around percent sowing activity has been completed in the Sangli district. The farmers in Telangana have sown turmeric across 1264 ha as on Jun 17, up from 991 ha a year ago. The normal area for turmeric is ha, according to the state agriculture department. However, expected rise in demand in coming months and lower production estimates may limit sharp fall in prices. As per market source, almost all the farmers are bringing limited medium variety for sale amid lesser price and subdued demand. As per the recent report from Spices Board of India, shipments of turmeric rose 11 percent in (Apr-Mar) to tonnes, from previous year. Reports of damage to the crop followed by concerns over quality of the produce due to incessant rain in the cardamom growing areas and lower crop estimate in Guatemala current year could limit sharp fall in the prices. However, the overall cardamom production in India which is estimated to be higher compared to last year, too weigh on the market sentiments. According to latest updates from Cardex, Guatemala, the total crop of cardamom for Guatemala for the is expected to be to tonnes, about 8000 tonnes less than last season. Cardamom exported from Guatemala this season through mid April 2015 is about 4500 tonnes less than that exported through April According to data released by the Spices Board of India, the country exported 3795 tonnes of small cardamom in against 3600 tonnes a year ago. Arrival of good quality cardamom from the new crop is expected to increase in the market from end July or early August. 6 OTHER SPICES Briefing: According to the recent report from International Pepper Community, the pepper market continued to be stronger and price of black Pepper at all producing countries increased further. This was likely due to decreasing exportable surplus of pepper from recent harvest in India and Vietnam. While new material from the harvest in Indonesia is only expected to arrive in the market by August.
