3 History Safe Patient Handling & Movement (SPHM) Policy Developed by Ergonomics Steering Committee Final approval January 2010 Includes formal SPH Training Program Prior SPH training: Informal On units as needed Sporadic Poorly attended No training space Minimal tracking Fairs Mostly for new equipment
4 Rationale To ensure that all patient care staff use SPH techniques in all patient care areas to provide a safe environment for patients and staff members when patient transfers are required Provide a consistent training for new employees to increase equipment use on the units Increase awareness and buy-in for SPH Reduce the number of and severity of SPHrelated injuries
5 Funding and Support SHIP (Safety and Health Initiatives Program) grant through PEF (Public Employees Federation) New York State nurses union Purchased training equipment and training supplies, such as training booklets Multiple departments provided additional funding for training materials and instructor time (Employee Health, Organizational Training & Development, Nursing, Environmental Health & Safety)
6 Who Gets Trained? All inpatient employees who perform patient transfers and lifts: RNs, LPNs, OTs, OTAs, PTs, PTAs, HCTs, HAs, USTs, Surgical Techs, Recreational Therapists, Speech and Language pathologists, Respiratory Therapists, Medical Radiographers, X Ray Aides New staff Current staff Staff experiencing injuries and/or returning to work Communicated to managers by HR
7 When do Staff get Trained? New employee orientation Nursing module day SPH is a module 4 hours in length Every 2 weeks or more frequently Includes evacuation equipment and body mechanics by Physical Therapy Additional classes for current staff/refresher training 2 hours in length SPH equipment
8 Training Space Lecture in standard classroom Hands-on demo with equipment in previous patient care space Negotiated use of space with planning and facilities department Ceiling lift was installed in the space by vendor during expansion construction Secure storage space Two separate rooms so groups can be divided Patient care-like environment
9 Training Format New Employee Orientation 4 hour class Lecture first 30 minutes in classroom One hour for body mechanics by PT Hands-on demo and return demo of SPH equipment is 2.5 hours in SPH training space patient care rooms Includes evacuation equipment Students are divided into groups with 1 or 2 instructors each
