1 Storegate Pro Backup Welcome. In this manual you can read for example about functions and how to configure the program. Read our example about versioning and storage limit before you configure your backup profile. Important to know: - Connection to internet need to be maintained during backup. - Server or computer need to be running when the backup is in work. - The service requires that the computer has a temporary local storage area when the backup is performed. - The customer needs to configure backup notifications by for example or Windowslogging. 2 Functions A software that is easy to use, but yet so powerful. Storegate Pro Backup gives a workspace where you can see everything. In this space every window and panels is gathered in one big program window. The workspace gives you an easy access to various tools and functions that you can use to scroll, show, edit and handle your backups. Full, incremental and differential backup Storegate Pro Backup can do backup on the files that has been changed from the last backup you made. Compress the backup with strong AES encryption Storegate Pro Backup using Zip to compress the data. The program splits the backup in to pieces of 500 MB. Backup of open files The program using the functionality Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS), which means that you don t have to shut down your program where backup will be made.

3 Plugins are used to backup for example user preferences and databases. Sometimes it s difficult to identify exactly which files or registry settings that you want to backup. E- mail clients and other common programs often store their files in hidden folders or registry keys. Storegate Pro Backup uses predefined ads (plugins) to make the choices easier. Database backup Storegate Pro Backup has plugins to the most common database formats. Backup and reset can be made without the need of stopping the database server. Advanced Record Management Storegate Pro Backup creates a library which contains history of backups and files contained in each backup run. After each backup a record is created. This function gives a clear overview of the backup history and allows you to keep track of file versions. By only one click you can restore full, incremental or differential backup at any time. Runs as a Windows service Scheduled backups, are running in the background as a Windows service and perform the tasks without the need of a user to be logged in. Schedule the backups daily, weekly or monthly It s easy to create, edit or remove a scheduled backup from the built-in calendar.

4 Example A company has 5 GB of documents and drawings which they want to backup. How much new data that will be (or changed) each day varies, but around 500 MB. The company will make a full backup on Sundays and will only do backup on new and changed files during the weekdays. If you make a schedule in each day of the work with these settings the backup strategi will be the following: When a successfully full backup is made two weeks after the creating of the backup, the first full one that is made will be removed.

5 This example requires at least 16 GB (5 GB full + 5 GB full + 6 GB incremental) storage. It also requires 5 GB temporary storage for the third full backup which is uploading (before the oldest is re moved in a successful uploading).

6 Installation Download and install the software from At the installation you will get to choose the number of plugins which will be installed. To save space, you can opt out of plugins that you know you don t need. However we recommend you to install all. Then when you start the program for the first time you will get to type in your login details on Storegate.

7 Profile Wizard At the creation of backup profiles you will be guided by a step-by-step guide. Profile name: The name you give the profile will also be the name of your files on the storage area. Sources: Each profile can contain several types of backup choices. For example it s possible to backup on a local file and MySQL server at the same time.

8 Backup types and versions: Next step in the guide is to set the backup type and the number of versions you want to save. Here you can combine a choice that fits your purpose. Storage and Security: If necessary, you can also encrypt the backup archives with a key.

9 Log: Logging of the backup operation can be adjusted as needed. If you want the log to be sent to e- mail you need to enter the SMTP-inställningar. The example in the picture down below sends an e- mail with information about the backup in the subject line. In this case it s my documents_1011.zip - SUCCESS Incremental Actions before/after backup driving: It can be various reasons why you need to do special job after a backup, for example a script.

10 Other Settings: Here you can for example set the program to always use the Volume Shadow Copy, or that the program will not be able to use all the bandwidth / disk performance. Scheduling: You can combine many different times for the same profile. There are really no limits how and when you want a backup operation to be done.

11 Plugins SQL Server Database backup With the SQL Server plugin you can backup and restore databases from the local Microsoft SQLservers. Every SQL Server-versions ( ) is supported. Server: Name on the SQL Server-instance to connect Authentication: Two authentication modes are available: Windows Authentication and SQL Server Authentication. Windows authentication allows a user to connect through a Windows user account. With SQL Server Authentication to SQL Server performs the authentication itself. User: Username for the SQL Server account (only if you have selected to connect using SQL Server Authentication). Password: SQL Server password (used only if you have selected to connect using SQL Server Authentication). Click the Update button to retrieve the list of databases. You must fill in the server parameters before, because the program must connect to the database server to get the list of databases. The database list shows the databases from that server. Select the databases you want to include in the backup. If the Include all databases are checked, all existing databases going to be included in the backup and all new databases will also be included automatically. The backup will create a full copy of the entire database.

12 MySQL Database backup MySQL Server plugin allows you to backup and restore databases from local or remote MySQL database servers. All MySQL and MariaDB versions are supported. Hostname: Name or IP address of the MySQL server Port: MySQL server port number (default 3306) Username: Username to MySQL Password: MySQL password Click the Update button to retrieve the list of databases. You must fill in the server parameters before, because the program must connect to the database server to get the list of databases. The database list shows the databases from that server. Select the databases you want to include in the backup. If the Include all databases are checked, all existing databases going to be included in the backup and all new databases will also be included automatically. If Include all tables are checked, all existing tables going to be included in the backup and all new tables will also be included automatically. The backup will create SQL dumps of MySQL tables

13 FAQ Frequently asked questions Can I make a backup of various files, folders, registry keys, databases at once? Yes. A profile can contain an unlimited number of backup jobs. You can mix as many backup items you need. Can Storegate Pro Backup do incremental, differential and full backups? Yes. The program supports full, incremental and differential backups. What happens when I change the type of backup? You can always switch between full, incremental and differential backup. If you switch from incremental to differential, the program will make a full backup next time. Works Storegate Pro Backup with Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012? Yes. The program supports all Windows version (all 32/64bit editions) of Windows 2003/XP and beyond. What happens if the backup fails because the computer has turned off or the Internet connection does not work? The program will move forward run to the next scheduled time. Can I use Storegate Pro Backup to backup my entire server (clone)? Storegate Backup Pro is primarily designed to make backup copies of your important files and folders. You should use a specially designed program to backup your entire server. Can you open the zip and 7z files (archives) in other programs? Yes, they are compatible. You can use a program Zip compression (WinZip, 7-Zip or WinRAR) to extract files from archives. Can Storegate Pro Backup make multiple versions of each file (versioning)? Yes. The program creates a library that contains a history of backups and files in e ach backup run. The items in the library called archives. An archive is created after each backup run. This feature provides a clear overview of the backup history and allows you to keep track of file versions. Can I set a different schedule for a profile? Yes. You can set up multiple schedules for a profile. For example: full backup on the first day of the month and incremental backups on the weekends. Can Storegate Pro Backup create log files for each backup run? Storegate Pro Backup generates a log file during backup. The program can save the log file to a directory and send the log file to the specified address. Events can also be reported to the Windows event log. Can the program do backup Exchange? Not in the current situation. However, we re making plans to develop a plugin, like MS SQL, which can backup Exchange. We hope this plugin is complete later this year.

14 How do you backup user or password? When you start the program you will be asked to fill in your new details. Confirm by pressing OK. Then select cancel and restart the application.
