2 ISLAM Two (a) Lesson 1 Key words: Mosque, minaret, dome ing intentions At a place of worship, outside Recall the last lesson at special buildings e.g. supermarket or a school; how do you recognise it? What special features does it have? Friday is a day of special prayer; call to prayer inside the mosque, decorations with patterns and texts, and no pictures. Men and women pray separately. The holy book is called the Qur an; how it is treated A Muslim place of worship is called a mosque, which means a place to bow down. Mosques usually have a tall tower called a minaret, from where the people are called to worship five times a day. This call is usually recorded and comes from loud speakers. The larger mosques have a dome; this represents the arch of the heavens above the earth. It reminds believers of God s power when he created the universe. Mosques are often beautifully decorated inside and outside with patterns made of mosaic. The Muslim symbol of the crescent moon and star are often seen, this a symbol of God s guidance. If possible visit a mosque or watch a video or look at a picture of one Make a model of a Mosque using a shoe box and a cardboard roll Design a pattern in mosaic, maybe using sticky paper. 3 ISLAM Two (a) Lesson 2 Key words: Mosque, Qur an, Mecca ing intentions At the inside of a place of worship Recall the last lesson Think about what you see when you go into a special building e.g. a library, what do you see? How do you behave? Friday is a day of special prayer; call to prayer inside the mosque, decorations with patterns and texts, and no pictures. Men and women pray separately. The holy book is called the Qur an; how it is treated When Yaseen goes with his father into the mosque he takes off his shoes, and puts them in a special rack, his head is covered with a little cap. He goes into the washing area first to get himself ready for prayer; he washes his hands and arms, his feet and his face. In the prayer hall there are no seats, no musical instruments. Around the walls are beautiful decorations which are patterns or writings from the Qur an, the holy book of the Muslims. There are no pictures or statues. Yaseen and his father bow, then kneel on the floor facing the direction of Mecca, the holy place of the Muslims. There is a kind of pulpit from which the leader of the Mosque preaches his sermon especially on Fridays. Sana and her mother pray in a separate part of the Mosque. The family go to the Mosque especially on Friday and feast days If possible visit a mosque or watch a video or look at a picture of one. The holy book is called the Qur an; how it is treated The Muslims special holy book is called the Qur an. The saying found in this book were begun to be collected together during the life of the prophet Muhammad and completed after his death. Muslim see the teachings of the prophet as so beautiful that they believe his words could only come from God. The words of the Qur an have remained unchanged since the time of Muhammad The Qur an is written in Arabic. For Muslims the Qur an is a very special book and so they treat it with great respect and honour. In Yaseen and Sana s family it is kept on the top shelf of their bookcase. It wrapped up in a velvet cloth. They never put any other book on top of it. Their Father washes his hands and takes his shoes off before he gets it down to read. It has its own special book rest; it never touches the ground. Their father and mother teach Yaseen and Sana some of the sayings from the Qur an. They have learned some of them by heart. Here is a saying from the Holy Qur an (17:23) Your Lord has ordered that you worship none but him and show kindness to your parents Why is the Qur an treated so carefully? 5 ISLAM Two (b) Lesson 1 Key words: Allah, mosque, Qur an, prayer ing intentions We respect and value others If you have a special friend you want to spend time with them and talk to them and tell them all the things that are important to you. You also want to listen to what they have to tell. When do you speak to your friends, your brother and sisters, your parents or grandparents? We like to spend time with those we care about. Muslims pray often Important 99 names of God, qualities and attributes. Muslim values of good manners, kindness, honesty and respect for others Muslims pray to Allah five times every day, early morning, midday, afternoon, after sunset, and nightfall. They take off their shoes, cover their heads, wash, and roll out their prayer mat to face Mecca the holy city. Then they stand, kneel and bow low, touching the ground with foreheads. This is to show that they are humble and respectful to God. They praise and thank Allah, ask forgiveness for their sins and ask for their needs. They use words from the holy book, the Qur an as well as their own words. On Friday Muslims try to go to the Mosque for mid-day prayer, and prepare to prayer in the same way as they do at home. Women can also go to the Mosque where they sit separately from the men. Some women prefer to prayer at home especially if they have young children to look after. Here are the first words of the Qur an. In the name of Allah, most merciful. Praise be to God, Lord of the universe, the merciful, the mercy giving! Master of the day of judgement! You alone do we worship and from you do we ask for help. Guide us along the straight road. Muslim values of good manners, kindness, honesty and respect for others The holy Qur an contains 99 most beautiful Arabic names for Allah, each name describes the nature or characteristics of Allah. Many Muslims use a subhah, a string of beads to count their prayers on. Some subhahs have 33 beads some have 99. In the Qur an it states: He is Allah, the Creator, the Originator, the Fashioner. To Him belong the Most Beautiful Names; Whatever is in the heavens and on earth, declares His Praises and Glory And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise. And again He is Allah, the One; Allah the Eternal, Absolute Find out some of the names given to Allah. Choose a few that you like best, find out what they might mean and how they tell you what Allah is like. Use one of the names to design a calligraphy pattern with it. How do you respond to your parents when they ask you to do something? Recall the last lesson about the qualities of Allah. Muslims pray often Important 99 names of God, qualities and attributes. Muslim values of good manners, kindness, honesty and respect for others The holy Qur an stresses the importance of respect for human life and this includes responsibilities between parents and their children. It tells children to obey their parents and look after them and to care for them when they get old. Show kindness to parents and to relations and orphans and the needy (4.36) What would life be like if we all did that? Islamic law tells Muslims that to live the will of Allah they must be well behaved, this includes keeping promises, having good intentions, being honest, being tolerant, patient, humble, gentle, thankful, polite, clean, keen to learn and think of others. Here is a story about Muhammad. One day he came across some people resting in the shade of the trees. Everything was quiet except for the noise of a camel wailing. The camel was tied up to a tree in the full sun; he was weak and thin. Muhammad stroked him and gave him something to drink. He asked who the owner was. It was one of the people sitting in the shade. You should be ashamed of yourself, said Muhammad, Allah entrusted this animal to you to care for. How dare you sit in the shade when this poor camel is suffering so? How do these values show the qualities of Allah? Which value do you think most important and why? What would the world be like if everyone believed and lived that value? Act the story.
