General report 1. Host institution and exact dates of semester abroad My host institution was the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim. I started studying there at the 10 th of August and the last day of the semester was at the 19 th of December. 2. Contact with home faculty, preparation and journey Contact with the home faculty was really good and really fast. At first, there is a lot of information available online and there was one useful information session. Further preparation consisted of sending and signing a lot of documents to the NTNU and it took me quite a long time to find out everything. In Trondheim, the contact with the home faculty was mainly about the learning agreement and was not that much. I took the plane from Amsterdam to Trondheim with a change of planes in Oslo (you had to take all your baggage from the baggage belt and I almost missed my second flight). The public transport in Trondheim is really good and there are a lot of buses going to the city centre and several student campuses (for instance Værnesekspressen). 3. Residence abroad You don t need any visa when you are traveling to Norway, but you do need a residence permit if you are staying for more than 3 months in Norway (don t worry, you can get this in Trondheim and the NTNU will arrange several sessions so that you can get one). I arrived in Trondheim at the 9 th of August and I flew back at the 20 th of December. One week before the real studying starts there is an Introduction Week and you should definitely attend this week, because you get to know a lot of other international students, the city and other useful information. Norway is a very expensive country and this is mainly about the food and drinks (in particular the alcoholic drinks). Keep into account that you will spend way more per month than in the Netherlands especially when you like to party just like me. I lived in Moholt Studentby, this is a big student campus on top of an hill and close to the two biggest university campuses. I got a room in one of the many buildings on the fourth floor. It was a small 12m 2 room with a shared kitchen, toilet and bathroom. I shared my flat with 3 other international students and the accommodation was perfectly fine for one semester, nothing special but just fine. If you are applying as an exchange student in Trondheim there is a big chance that you will automatically be assigned for an accommodation. Moholt is by far one of the cheapest accommodations in Trondheim (around 380 euros per month) and that s why I recommend to be very active when you are assigned for the accommodation (other accommodations are quickly double the price per month).

Trondheim is a very nice city for students regarding parties, events, etc. There is for instance a big student faculty called Studentersamfundet which organizes a lot of parties and social events. Besides there is a very big festival called UKA once every two years and this lasts for one whole month loaded with events and parties with famous artists. Last but not least, there are a lot of bars and some clubs which are very nice to visit. I visited for instance the club Downtown many times and had great times over there. For sporting there was an organization called NTNUI. This organization is almost the same as the ACLO in Groningen. For about 50 euros you could fitness, attend trainings, lessons and also join whole teams for one semester in almost every sport you could imagine. 4. Grant In total I received a grant of 1350 euros. This was by far not enough to cover all the costs. With this grant I only could have paid my first 3 months of rent and my flight. The flights were about euros in total and the rent was about 370 euros each month. Besides that, the food and drinks are very expensive as I already mentioned. However, fish, fruit and traveling around was cheap compared to The Netherlands. For instance a 2-way flight ticket to Oslo costs about 60 euros. In order to reduce the costs of food and (alcoholic) drinks there was a daily shopping bus to Sweden and this was free! You had to book a seat in a bus and order your alcoholic drinks in advance. The trip took about 1,5 hours to get in Sweden and then you get one hour of pure shopping pleasure. The food and drinks were namely much cheaper there compared to Norway. Take into account that you are away for the whole day when you are doing this. I did this about 4 times and bought as much food and drinks as I could bring in my suitcase. 5. Study (general) It is quite challenging to find business courses and to get a non-overlapping schedule. The NTNU only provides courses that last for one semester so there is only one exam period. The lectures started at the 17 th of August and the last possible exam date was the 19 th of December. There are lectures until the beginning of November and then you get a little break of around 2-3 weeks in order to study for the exams. The exams start at around the beginning of December. The level of education was lower than in The Netherlands. Converted to the dutch grade system you only had to get a 4 in order to pass the exams. There were no language problems at all; everybody spoke English fluently. I took three courses: Norwegian Society (15 ECTS), Management of Business Relationships and Networks (7,5 ECTS) and Maintenance Management (7,5 ECTS). Norwegian Society was a course about Norway s organization of their political system, their resources, foreign policies, and etcetera. Management of Business relationships and Networks was a course about how companies can manage their relationships to other companies. Maintenance Management was a course about in what way maintenance could help

companies to get a competitive advantage in terms of dependability, quality and safety. I passed these courses quite easily. The facilities and International Office was very nice and well organized. For international students there was an International House where you could ask for help at any time. 6. Other relevant info you want to share with our future exchange students Meet up with a lot of international students. Don t be afraid, everyone is in the same situation and you make friends very easily. Also do a lot of trips. Norway is one of the most beautiful countries in the world and this is your chance to visit a lot of places. I would recommend to do a Lofoten trip, Geiranger trip and a husky dog sledding tour. I enjoyed these trips the most during my stay in Norway, but it is of course up to yourself to decide. 7. Summary impression of the study period abroad and any advice/suggestions/tips for students or academic staff who will be involved with the host institution in the future. Studying abroad has been a great experience, I learned a lot of myself and I made many new friends from foreign countries but also from The Netherlands. The NTNU is a well-organized university and you will easily find your way in the city. The many trips I did and the crazy nights with all the internationals were the things I enjoyed the most. Also studying at an other university in an different country was a nice and interesting experience.

Specific report SOS Norwegian Society The course covered 4 main topics that deal with characteristics of the Norwegian society: Norwegian politics and economy, the welfare state, organizations and working life, and family and youth. Comparative analyses of Norway within other national and international settings have also been addressed. A central theme throughout was the concept of the Scandinavian Model or Nordic Model, which refers to the combination of a market-based economy with a substantial welfare State and an emphasis on participative democracy and equality goals across social dividing lines such as gender and class. The course both explained this model and critiques exaggerated claims as to its realization. Norwegian Society was a semester course and counted for 15 ECTS. In total there were 18 lectures. This means two lectures of 2 hours each week. There was one book and about 4 articles for each lecture. Thereby there is one paper to be written in this course. Besides, there were some side activities organized including a guided tour in the Nidaros Cathedral, guided tour in a jail and a guided tour through the Trondheim city. The study load was not that much. The exam took me only 2 hours and was quite easy. I enjoyed the course and I learned a lot about the Norwegian society and systems. Literature: Heidar, K. (2001) Norway. Elites on Trial. Boulder, Colorado.: Westview Press. (190 pp) and many articles. TIØ4345 Management of Business Relationships and Networks The course provides insight into how companies can manage their relationships to other companies. The subject started with an introduction to the theme of business relationships and networks, and how these influence the companies value creation, innovativeness, and productivity. This course counted for 7.5 ECTS. Each week there were 2 lectures of 2 hours each. Besides, there were case discussions and group assignments. In total there were two assignments, which count for 50% each, make up the final grade. There was no exam for this course. The literature consisted only of articles (about 30) and there was no book. The assignments were made in groups and took me quite a long time to finish. Nevertheless, it was not very difficult and when dividing the work with your group members the time needed for each assignment was totally okay and not too much. It was not a very interesting course, because the assignments were not very contributing to the knowledge learned in the course. Literature: Articles

TPK Maintenance Management In this course there was focused on the maintenance function as an investment for high dependability, quality and safety. Topics; maintenance planning, maintenance costs, maintenance concepts, organisation, LCC and LCP, Safety, Vulnerability, Aging, CMMS, KPIs, 5S, pit stop and asset management. The course counted for 7.5 ECTS. There was one weekly lecture of 4 hours, a semester project and some small exercises. At least 4 of the exercises must have been delivered. In the final evaluation the semester project counted 40 % and written exam counted 60 % of the total grade. Besides, there was one excursion to Shell in Kristiansund, which was quite interesting. This course was a mixture of a lot of theory about maintenance and some math concerning optimization models in maintenance. I didn t expect that there was much math in this course and I wasn t totally prepared and educated to be able to do this kind of math. This course was namely for Industrial Engineering students. Nevertheless, I studied hard for the exam and both the math and exam were not too difficult after all. It was an interesting course, because I learned something about optimizing different business processes, which I didn t learned in Groningen at all. Literature: Articles and online book chapters.
