1 CAREERS IN EDUCATION #3246 INDUSTRY SECTOR: Education, Child Development and Family Services PATHWAY: Education DESCRIPTION: This course combines classroom and workplace based training to develop the talents and skills needed for employment as an Instructional Aide. Students will be able to assist certificated classroom teachers in the preparation and use of instructional materials. Students will present or reinforce learning concepts with individuals and groups and supervise social and playground activities. Integrated throughout the course are Common Core State Standards and Career Technical Education Standards, which include safety, communication, technology, ethics, career planning and other employability skills. Included are safety, communication, technology, ethics, career planning and other employability skills. INFORMATION: A. Pre-requisite: 16 years old or a 11 th /12 th grader. B. Abilities Required: Follow directions, basic reading, math written and verbal communication skills. C. Dress Requirement and Grooming: Consistent with Industry Standards D. CAREERS IN EDUCATION COURSE HOURS: CLASSROOM HOURS/ CC The educational and professional requisites for becoming a teacher and the responsibilities of professional educators. Explores career and vocational goals. Displays knowledge of responsibilities of instructional aides in various settings. Researches various educational assistant opportunities. Students will research and create a 5-year career plan to include education and experience required to actualize goal. Students will create a professional describing their beliefs of effective teaching. A1.3 Understand the interdependence of various career roles and how those roles contribute to the success of the child care development program or work site. 3.2 Evaluate personal character traits, such as trust, respect and responsibility, and understand the impact they can have on career success. 3.4 Research the scope of career opportunities available and the requirements for education, training, certification and licensure.
3 UNIT 2. SCHOOLS IN SOCIETY COURSE HOURS: CLASSROOM 10.00/ CC 5.00 Education in a historical context and the evolution of teaching as a profession. Researches the history of schools in society Identifies educational options Researches and identifies how society impacts schools, and learning. Interviews a teacher, discusses how he/she responds to students who are dealing with problems. Compares and contrasts responses to author s suggestions. GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF MIDDLE CHILDHOOD COURSE HOURS: CLASSROOM HOURS/ CC HOURS Provides the student with a working knowledge of the progression of development throughout middle school Describes normal physical, emotional, and cognitive growth in school-age children. Identify characteristics of special need populations. In small groups, research and identify eight Kindergarten Readiness skills, formulate explanations as to importance. Present to class. A5.2 Describe he developmental stages of infants, toddlers, and children. A6.1 Describe how to help children develop a positive self-image and self-esteem and develop self-discipline and respect for oneself and others. Demonstrate elements of written and electronic communication, such as accurate spelling, grammar, and format.
6 UNIT 5. PRINCEPLES OF TEACHING COURSE HOURS: CLASSROOM HOURS/ CC HOURS Students will study the development of teaching strategies and skills. Emphasis is placed on learning styles. Identifies lesson plan components. Demonstrates an understanding of various teaching techniques (motivation, retention) Using a well-known children s book to present to group of children, using Gardner s Multiple Intelligences, describes an enrichment activity for each intelligence. A7.4 Demonstrate appropriate teaching techniques and interaction styles for working with children of varying ages, learning styles and cultural backgrounds. A11.1 Select and develop age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate teaching materials and resources. 2.5 Communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media and formats Construct projects and products specific to the Education, Child Development, and Family Services sector requirements and expectations.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT COURSE HOURS: CLASSROOM HOURS/ CC HOURS Students will analyze the role of a teacher in creating an organized classroom environment through the use of effective classroom management strategies. Demonstrates an understanding of various classroom discipline techniques. Identifies methods of communicating effectively with children Describes the difference between discipline and punishment In an essay students will compare and contrast guidance, discipline and punishment Design an appropriate outdoor learning environment A6.3 Diagram the elements of positive guidance and discipline techniques that are based on the stages of children s development. A6.4 Identify practical strategies for finding positive solutions to common behavioral problems. 5.4 Interpret information and draw conclusions, based on the best analysis, to make informed decisions Explain positive guidance and discipline techniques that promote feelings of self-worth as they apply to the developmental stages of children.
8 UNIT 7. LESSON PLAN DEVELOPMENT COURSE HOURS: CLASSROOM HOURS/ CC HOURS Students will learn to prepare and deliver effective lesson plans Identifies the components of a lesson plan. Demonstrates an understanding of state educational standards. Students will develop a 10-minute lesson plan incorporating strategies to support various learning styles. This will be presented to a group of children. A8.4 Plan and conduct activities that reinforce foundation skills, reflect an integrated and emergent curriculum, and support school readiness A12.4 Implement planned activities to facilitate multidisciplinary learning and reinforce concepts 2.5. Communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media and formats Construct projects and products specific to the Education, Child Development, and Family Services sector requirements and expectations

ANTI-BIAS CURRICULUM AND CULTURE DIVERSITY COURSE HOURS: CLASSROOM HOURS/ CC HOURS Prepares students to offer a rich learning environment that addresses cultural and linguistic diversity in the elementary setting. Discusses the importance of diversity in the classroom setting and in the community. Identifies impact of biased content and assessment on child development. Explain how positive parent-staff relationships, family members and community contribute to the development of the school age child. Working in small groups, students will design an activity for elementary school aged children that encourages children to share cultural customs with one another. A5.3 Summarize the ways in which diversity, family and culture influence the development of children A10.2 Interpret how positive family-staff relationships, family members and community contribute to the physical, intellectual, social and emotional development of the child. 2.2 Identify barriers to accurate and appropriate communication. 5.1 Identify and ask significant questions that clarify various points of view to solve problems.
10 UNIT 9. THE PROFESSIONAL TEACHER COURSE HOURS: CLASSROOM HOURS/ CC HOURS This unit will contrite on the traits of the professional and what it means to develop professionally. Discusses the importance of and existence of professional organizations Throughout the course students will assemble samples of their work to showcase in a culminating course portfolio. 11 UNIT 10. SUPPORTING THE LEARNING PROCESS COURSE HOURS: CLASSROOM HOURS/ CC HOURS This unit will familiarize students with methods and equipment used in managing the learning environment. Assists in supervision of children indoors and outdoors. Assists in preparation of curriculum materials and room environment. Plans, prepares, teaches and cleans up activities in various cognitive areas. Students will complete a training plan that addresses assisting a classroom supervisor, interaction with students and professional and field appropriate conduct. A11.1 Select and develop age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate teaching materials and resources A11.2 Use the appropriate and current instructional technology and equipment to develop program materials and support learning A12.2 Understand the established standards and the standard operating procedures in classrooms, libraries, halls, and bathrooms and on the school grounds 8.3 Demonstrate ethical and legal practices consistent with Education, Child Development, and Family Services sector workplace standards.

HEALTH AND SAFETY PRACTICES IN THE ELEMENTARY ENVIORNMENT COURSE HOURS: CLASSROOM HOURS/ CC HOURS This unit includes information regarding nutrition, child abuse and mandated reporting, First Aid and CPR as well as common childhood diseases. Identifies accident procedures specific to an elementary school setting. American Heart Association s Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid/CPR Certification. Students will research the disaster preparedness plans for their site. The components of the plans and the duties of staff involved will be presented to the class. A3.4 Adhere to the health, safety, regulatory and procedural requirements for the work site. A4.2 Implement the staff procedures, duties and responsibilities related to safety, emergency and disaster preparedness plans. 6.6 Maintain a safe and healthful working environment
