He was born and raised in in Mikese in Morogoro region. He is a primary school leaver who does petty business. Fikiri s main worries in life are HIV/AIDS and STIs. He faces several challenges in life but the key challenge for him is lack of a stable income. In the next five years, Fikiri would like to live a good life and own a house. He is proud of the trust that he has gained from his community and the fact that he doesn t use drugs. Fikiri likes going out during his spare time and talking to friends. He is trendy and he admires successful business people in his community. He confides in his best friend. Fikiri has multiple partners. He has a partner who is 19 years old. Fikiri uses Salama 3 Bomba with his partners. He normally listens to his partner s advice when it comes to issues of using condoms. Fikiri plans to buy condoms in advance, but he also buys condoms on the spot when the need arise. He buys condoms once a week from shops, pharmacies and guest houses. He sometimes gets condoms from his friends. Fikiri uses condoms frequently with partners except with those that he trust or those who have gone for HIV/AIDS test with him. Fikiri considers several factors before choosing a condom to use. He chooses a condom on the basis of quality (i.e. a condom with good smell, good packaging, a condom that he has never had a bad experience with and TBS certification.) Fikiri believes that condoms protect against HIV and unwanted pregnancies. At times Fikiri thinks that condom use may reduce sexual pleasure but he worries of contracting HIV/AIDS by P S I 1

2 not using condoms. Fikiri s trusted sources of information are health workers, Radio and Television. He holds a lot of respect for political and religious leaders in his community. SALAMA: Salama is a single mother aged 25 years and a primary school leaver who lives in Kipera in Morogoro Region. She is employed but her key challenge in life is lack of sufficient income to sustain family. Her other key challenges in life are temptations in relationships and lack of education. Salama has multiple sexual relationships and she is worried of being infected with STIs and getting pregnant. She aspires to enjoy a better life in the future, get married and raise a stable family. Salama uses her spare time on domestic chores (washing dishes & cooking) and chatting with friends and customers. Her role models in life are hard working people with a strong sense of care towards their families. She confides in her sister. Her partner is in between the age of 27 and 37 years old. Salama uses 3 bomba. She uses condoms with her partners because of the fear of getting STIs and pregnancy. Salama plans to purchases condoms once a week from shops, pharmacies, she also get condoms from clinics and uses them on mutual consent with her partners. Salama is a frequent condom user except with regular (long lasting) or trusted partners. She buys condoms that are of high quality (condoms that has been approved by TBS, good smell) and those that are easily available. Salama believes that with condoms she can prevent unwanted pregnancies, STIs/HIV/AIDS and have no negative outcomes. She believes that not using condoms may lead to diseases, lack of confidence. Salama s trusted sources of information are Television and Radio but she also reads newspapers and attends promotional events. She respects elderly people in the community. P S I 2

3 DASHBOARD: Beliefs to Reinforce: Fikiri and Salama believe that condoms are important because they protect against HIV/AIDS and unwanted pregnancies. They both believe discussion on HIV/AIDS prevention among partners, peers, parents/relatives is vital. Fikiri and Salama believe that planned condom purchase reduces inconveniences when sex needs arises. 1. There is no price for life, protection is more important than money (Attitude) 2. Condoms are important because in one way or another they give the chance of living a longer life without getting infections. (Attitude) 3. Protection is better than cure, that s why people use rubber most often 4. I will not have sex if there are no condoms, one day is enough to get you infected. (Self 5. Condoms prevent people from getting diseases like HIV/AIDS syphilis, Gonorrhea and other std s. (Attitude) 6. Condoms make people have sex freely and in a good manner (Attitudes) 7. Salama condoms means that it is a safe condom, you may satisfy your sexual desire without being infected. (knowledge) 8. 4 Beliefs to changes: Fikiri believes that using Salama condoms makes sex unenjoyable/less pleasurable. He also believes that people who use condoms frequently are considered to be prostitutes. Fikiri and Salama believe that Salama condom is of low quality, cheap and bursts easily. They all believe that Salama regular has been in the market for long. 11. When you go to shop they normally say there are original and fake products, the original ones are expensive and the fake one are cheap, so from there I conclude that, those that are expensive are the ones that are safe as compared to the cheap ones (Beliefs) 17. Fikiri and Salama believe consistent condom users will be ready to carry condoms in their pocket just in case. They all believe that consistent condom users will be ready to initiate condom discussion with their partners 21. I am not in favour of the rough riders and I should be honest that when leaving home to go and buy condoms my intentions are to buy Salama, if they are not available then I will go to another shop and another shop. Newspapers mostly FEMA and also TV and concerts and meetings 33. I trust radio and television because in newspapers write things that are not clear 34. Advertisement impress and sensitize people, I cannot have sex without a condom 35. I normally get health information from health centers, like Hospitals, dispensaries and others. (Social Support) 36. I normally talk to my wife and my partners (Social Support) 37. Their advertisements are good and I think people like using them because of what they see being advertised. (Brand Appeal) Acquisition of Stories: Fikiri and Salama believe that it is important to plan to buy condoms but at times they buy on the spot. Fikiri and Salama by condoms from normal shops, pharmacy and guest houses, they also get condoms from friends or promotional activities. Facilitators 38. I purchase my condoms in the evening because that is the time my mind is settled. 39. I buy condoms once or twice a week. 40. I buy condoms 3 or 4 times a week. 41. Buying condoms from places near where I stay makes me shy because everyone will know that I am going to have sex. 42. I buy condoms when there is a need but also mostly on Friday because on weekends anything can happen. 43. I get condoms when I go to the clinic or I get them from my friends P S I 6

7 44. In a number of places I have seen the machines that have condoms, so at times I purchase from the machines. 45. I normally plan to buy condoms 46. Condoms are available in guest houses, bars, shops and pharmacies, they are easily available. (Availability) Knowledge/Sophistication: Fikiri and Salama believe that consistent use of Salama condoms can prevent HIV/AIDS, STIs infections and unwanted pregnancies. Fikiri and Salama believe that quality condoms are those tested by TBS and have not outlived their expiry dates. They believe that Salama condoms smell good and that is something that makes love making romantic. Fikiri believes that condoms use is important because it helps people to plan for life more freely and confidently without any fears of getting infections. He also believes that Salama condoms means protection to him. Facilitators 47. Quality is more important than the quantity, there is no point of buying 7 condoms which will not protect you, and I better go for one condom that will protect me. (Knowledge) 48. Dume condoms are more lubricated they are good since when you finish having sex it is easy to take it off. (Brand Appeal) 50. People consider quality and you consider whether or not the condoms have expired (Brands Appeal) 51. I always consider the fact that it has enough oil and good smell (Brand Appeal) 52. When I hear Salama condom I recall that you can have sex with a stranger having diseases and if you use Salama you can get out safely (Knowledge) 53. I can't stop having sex just because my favorite condom is not available the main thing is to ensure I have protection. (Knowledge) 54.
