1 Planning Services Division July 2004 Number 24 Characteristics of the Asian Population Within a decade, the number of Asian residents in Broward has more than doubled. The largest groups of Asian residents were born in India, the Philippines, Israel and China. Asian Population Growth. In 2000, 2.3% of Broward County residents were Asian. Although still a relatively small racial group, the Asian population is one of the fastest growing in Broward County. Between 1990 and 2000, the number of Asian residents more than doubled, from less than 17,000 to more than 36,000. Although the census aggregates Asians into one group, it is important to recognize that the Asian continent is made up of many countries that have tremendous cultural, political and religious diversity. Data from Census 2000 provides a breakdown of individual and household characteristics by racial group. In comparison to the population as a whole, the Asian population in Broward County is generally younger and slightly more affluent.
