Introduction The St. Jude Trike A Thon is a fun way to help other children children who are very sick with very bad diseases called cancers. But they are getting help at a very special place called St. Jude Children s Research Hospital. St. Jude has a lot of doctors and scientists who work there day and night to help these boys and girls feel better. You can help these boys and girls, too. The St. Jude Trike A Thon raises money for the kids of St. Jude by teaching kids how to ride their trikes safely. Picture showing on other side: 2

Meet Bikewell Bear This is Bikewell Bear. He is a very smart bear who loves to ride his trike. He wears his helmet when he rides because it is the safe thing to do. He learned everything he knows about safety from his teacher, Mrs. Huggins. She teaches the children lots of fun and important things at school. It makes Bikewell Bear happy to wear his helmet because he knows it makes Mrs. Huggins proud, and it keeps him safe. Meet Pedals the Bunny This is Pedals the Bunny. She is one of Bikewell Bear s very good friends, and she loves to ride her tricycle. Sometimes, Pedals needs a little extra help remembering the safety lessons as she gets ready to ride. Meet Mrs. Huggins This is Mrs. Huggins. She is the teacher at Honeycomb School. She loves getting Bikewell Bear, Pedals the Bunny and all of her students ready for the big St. Jude Trike A Thon this week. She teaches them four easy lessons to always remember before they ride! 6 The Big Trike Adventure Story Once upon a time, there was a really nice man named Mr. Danny Thomas. Mr. Thomas loved to make people laugh, and he loved to watch children grow up to be big and strong. Mr. Thomas made a promise to help sick kids in need and help them feel better if he could. He never wanted to see anyone unhappy ever again. When kids get sick, it makes mommies and daddies and grandparents really sad, too. So Mr. Thomas decided to do something, to help all the sick children in the world, because children should be happy, should play, ride trikes and not be sick in the hospital. That is why Mr. Thomas built a place called St. Jude Children s Research Hospital. It is a hospital, but it is not scary. In fact, it is a really big place full of hope, and the kids get to ride around in red wagons and like to have fun, just like you do! Mr. Thomas raised money to help build St. Jude so very sick kids could get well. And that is what Mr. Danny Thomas did to help sick kids around the world, because helping people makes us all feel good. Picture showing on other side: 6

Mrs. Huggins is the teacher at Honeycomb School. It is a school a lot like ours. And today, she is teaching her class something very special. Mrs. Huggins told the class, This week is going to be a very important one around here. We are going to learn about the kids of St. Jude. They are very sick, but the doctors at St. Jude help them feel better. Bikewell Bear does not like it when he feels bad. It is not fun being sick. That made Bikewell think about the kids of St. Jude. So he asked his teacher, Mrs. Huggins, is there something that we can do to help the kids of St. Jude? Mrs. Huggins smiled and said, Yes, Bikewell and I want to help, too so I have an idea you will like very much. It is a way we can all help the kids of St. Jude feel better soon! (Announce: We are having a St. Jude Trike A Thon next week to raise money for the hospital Mr. Thomas opened. It is a very special place of hope named St. Jude Children s Research Hospital. Bikewell and Pedals are having a Trike A Thon, and so are we! Everyone will have an opportunity to bring your trikes to school at the end of the week.) Hand out the Sponsor Form Envelopes and ask the kids to get their parents permission to participate. Picture showing on other side: 8

DAY 1 ALWAYS WEAR YOUR HELMET Bikewell Bear was so excited to come to school today. He knew it was almost time to ride in the St. Jude Trike A Thon this week with all of his friends. Bikewell Bear already knew the first and most important lesson about trike safety. Mrs. Huggins had taught him this lesson before! (Ask the class, When you ride your trike, what should you always remember to wear? Announce: Your helmet! ) Pedals the Bunny was excited, too. She was so excited that she jumped on her trike without putting her helmet on first. Before Bikewell Bear could give Pedals her helmet, she pedaled away quickly! And then, do you know what happened? Pedals went a little too fast, and she slid right off her pretty pink trike! She bumped her head, and it hurt. But luckily she was okay. Mrs. Huggins gave her a big hug and a bandage for her boo boo. Picture showing on other side: 10

DAY 1 (continued) Bikewell Bear gave Pedals a pretty pink helmet of her very own to use. Pedals smiled and felt so much better, and she promised to never, ever ride her trike again without putting on her helmet first! Remember: Before you get on your trikes, you must always remember to put on one very important thing. It goes on your head... it buckles good and tight under your chin... and it comes in lots of bright and shiny colors just for you... can you guess what it is? Class answers: Your helmet. (Announce: That s right! It is a helmet and it protects your head from accidents and boo boos like Pedals the Bunny had. Remember to always wear your helmet. ) Hand out coloring sheets for Day 1 to your students. Show the corresponding lesson from the DVD. Picture showing on other side: 12

DAY 2 NEVER RIDE IN THE STREET Bikewell Bear and Pedals the Bunny were back at school the next day and still very excited about the St. Jude Trike A Thon. Everyone in class had picked out a trike, and a helmet, because everyone remembered the lesson learned yesterday: Always wear a helmet! Mrs. Huggins was so happy the class had remembered. Today, she has another lesson to teach lesson number two: Never ride your tricycle in the street! Cars are big and fast, and they can hurt you if they do not see you in the street. So stay in places that are safe to ride, and then you can ride as much as you want! Mrs. Huggins dismissed the class, and the students ran to the playground! Bikewell and Pedals rode their trikes around in big circles at first, and then Bikewell pretended he was a race car driver VROOM VROOM! Bikewell was pretending so well that he rode down the sidewalk and headed toward the street. Before he knew it, he saw a car coming oh no! But before there was an accident, Bikewell remembered exactly what to do. Do you remember what Mrs. Huggins told him to do? Class answers: Never ride in the street! (Announce: That s right! You can ride your trike on the sidewalk if you are careful, but never ride in the street.) Picture showing on other side: 14

DAY 2 (continued) Remember: Riding your trike is fun on the playground, and you can ride your trike on the sidewalk if you are very careful but never, ever ride your tricycle in the street. Streets are made just for cars, and not for riding trikes. We are having so much fun learning our trike safety lessons, and we are getting ready to ride! Hand out coloring sheets for Day 2 to your students. Show the corresponding lesson from the DVD. Picture showing on other side: 16

DAY 3 ALWAYS BE CAREFUL NEAR DRIVEWAYS Bikewell Bear and Pedals the Bunny remembered the two important lessons on safety they have learned. Do you remember the two lessons we have learned about riding your trike safely? (Announce: 1. Always wear your helmet and 2. Never ride in the street. Very good!) Today, I have another lesson I want to teach you, said Mrs. Huggins. and it is very simple to do: Always be careful near driveways be extra careful because you never know the driver in the car may not see you, and you could get really hurt! Bikewell and Pedals like to ride their tricycles really fast. But they always make sure to slow down, to be careful near driveways. If a car is backing out, or pulling into the driveway, it is best to make sure you stop and let the car drive by. Then, you can ride safely and have so much fun! Picture showing on other side: 18

DAY 3 (continued) Remember: Always be careful riding near driveways. It is very important to watch out for cars, especially when you are riding on the sidewalk. We are having so much fun, and we are getting ready to ride! What did Bikewell and Pedals teach us today? Class answers: Always be careful near driveways! Hand out coloring sheets for Day 3 to your students. Show the corresponding lesson from the DVD. Picture showing on other side: 20

DAY 4 ALWAYS WATCH WHERE YOU ARE GOING Bikewell Bear and Pedals the Bunny have learned so much this week. Mrs. Huggins has gotten them ready to ride, by teaching them three very important safety lessons so far. Do you remember what they are? (Announce: 1. Always wear your helmet, 2. Never ride in the street, and 3. Always be careful near driveways! You are all so smart, and we are almost ready to ride!) Tomorrow is the big St. Jude Trike A Thon, and Mrs. Huggins has one more very important lesson to teach us all. While on the playground, Mrs. Huggins said, Children, you know what to do you have your helmets, you are not riding your trikes in the streets, and you are being extra careful when you ride near driveways. You are almost ready for our St. Jude Trike A Thon! And the very last lesson I will teach you is... And WHOOPS! Guess what happened? Bikewell Bear was not looking where he was riding on his trike, and he accidentally bumped right into Mrs. Huggins! But she just smiled down at Bikewell, and then she said, The last lesson, everyone, is to always watch where you are going! Bikewell Bear told Mrs. Huggins he was very sorry that he bumped into her, and then, everything was okay again. So Bikewell Bear and Pedals the Bunny rode away to join everyone else at the playground everyone was ready to ride in the St. Jude Trike A Thon. And now, you are ready to ride, too! Picture showing on other side: 22

DAY 4 (continued) Remember: It is very important to watch where you are going when you ride watch for things like parked cars, steps, pools, other kids on trikes, or even people walking, especially when you are riding on the sidewalk. Always watch where you are going, and you will have so much fun! What is the lesson we learned today? Class answers: Always watch where you are going. (Announce: Students, tomorrow is our St. Jude Trike A Thon. Bring your trikes and helmets to school. ) Hand out coloring sheets for Day 4 to your students. Show the corresponding lesson from the DVD. The End! Picture showing on other side: Scooter Bobby Brakeright Pedals the Bunny 24 Sam Smartride Bikewell Bear
