4 Guru Shikhamani Sruti Laya Sudhakara Swara Sadhana Ratna. Vidwan Shri Nandakumar, an A grade artist of the All India Radio, hails from the family of the renowned Nadaswaram exponents, Ambalapuzha Brothers of Kerala. He underwent training in percussion under Shri Kaithavana Madhavdas in the Gurukulam tradition. The call of sruti and laya magnetized him as he was a child and to this day he has reveled in the art's enchanting spell, sharing the happiness and joy he experiences with an ever widening circle of students. For over quarter of a century now, Shri Nandakumar has performed and conducted workshops on various platforms within the country and abroad. He has been on the faculty with all the leading fine arts sabhas in Mumbai the Shanmukhananda, the Music Triangle, the Naadalaya and the Fine Arts Society. Shri Nandakumar has trained students in Mridangam, Ghatam, Kanjira, Moorsing and in Konnakkol. Most of his senior students are graded artists with the All India Radio and participate in regular concerts. It is rare to find some one who s not only knowledgeable but also exudes excellence in playing seven streams of percussion. He has accompanied top ranking artists and the list included Shri Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, Dr. Bala Murali Krishna, Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, Dr. S. Ramanathan, Shri M. D. Ramanathan, Shri T. N. Krishnan, Dr. N. Ramani, Dr. N. Rajam, Shri T. V. Gopalakrishnan, Shri Nednuri Krishnamoorthy, Shri T. K. Govind Rao, Hyderabad Brothers, Ms. A. Kanyakumari and others. Awards and accolades, Shri Nandakumar earned have been many. He was awarded the titles of Guru Shikhamani, Sruti Laya Sudhakara and Swar Sadhana Ratna by Institutions he has been associated with. Fairly, he was the recipient of Life Time Achievement Award in Chennai for his contributions to the field of classical music. Sri Venkateswara Temple of Pittsburgh, USA, invited him to train artistes in their summer school for two consecutive years. He visited many countries viz. United States, Switzerland, Germany, UK and other countries. Artistes from USA, France and Australia travel the long distance to Mumbai, when they have the opportunity, to learn percussion from Shri Nandakumar. He has conducted lecture-cumdemonstration at Lamar University of Houston (USA) and Indiana University of Pennsylvania (USA) and also have performed at these venues. Shri Nandakumar has many albums to his credit. Of special mention here would be three volumes titled Jewels of Rhythm with his young students in the age group of just eight to thirteen. These albums have turned prized possessions for all aspirants, young and old, learning the arts of percussion. Shri Nandakumar established TSN's Percussive Arts Centre, to impart specialized training to students in percussion instruments and in Konnakkol. Students of the Centre who are settled abroad are keen on carrying the TSN flag to where they are, to be able to popularize the art of percussion.

35 Dear Music Lovers : TSN s Percussive Arts Centre The TSN s Percussive Arts Centre was founded in response to demands from aspirants for higher learning in the art of percussion. Since inception, the Centre has presented several annual events which were blessed with performance by big names in Carnatic Music-amongst others by Dr. N. Rajam (Violin), Dr. N. Ramani (Flute), Prof. T. N. Krishnan (Violin) and Ms. A. Kanyakumari (Violin) on platforms at the Shanmukhananda (Sion), the Fine Arts (Chembur), the Mayor s Hall (Andheri) etc. Such events organized under the banner of TSN s Percussive Arts Centre serve as an inspiration to young students and encourage them to take to the stage. Amongst our senior students many are A grade artistes with the All India Radio and Doordarshan and are performers in regular full fledged concerts, vocal and instrumental Carnatic Music, within the country and abroad. As performers, they have accompanied several top ranking musicians like K. J. Yesudas, O. S. Thyagarajan, T. K. Govinda Rao T. V. Gopalakrishnan, K. S. Gopalakrishnan, Trichur Ramachandran etc. in the classical style (vocal), internationally acclaimed violinsts like Prof. T. N. Krishnan, Ms. A. Kanyakumari etc. and T. S. Nandakumar for Tala Vadya Kutcheris. Our continuing commitment to fine arts and the transmittal of the art of percussion to upcoming new generation of aspirants would not be possible without financial assistance from Corporates, fine art lovers and the general public.
