1 Brook Learning Trust Train to Teach
2 Why train with us at The Brook Learning Trust? 5 good reasons to train with The Brook Learning Trust: A Higher Learning Teaching Assistant, currently working in the science department at The Hayesbrook School stated: You have made the right decision that teaching is the right career for you - now; all you need to do is find the right training provider. Teaching can be one of the most exciting, rewarding and challenging careers you can choose and if you decide to become a teacher, you will want to know that you have got off to the best possible start to your career. That is exactly what Brook Learning Trust School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) aims to help you do. Programme Opportunities Our school led course is linked to an outstanding University offering an extensive library and online journals. Our programme offers trainees the opportunity to gain QTS in addition to PGCE with 60 Master credits. Close Personal Support We are a small multi-academy Trust and therefore pride ourselves in offering high levels of personalisation and support. Starting as a HLTA has given me some invaluable experience to further my career and start my teacher training with Brook Learning Trust. The Brook Learning Trust (BLT) is an accredited SCITT provider based in Kent. We recognise the power of education to transform lives and communities, promote social justice and champion learning for all. We are looking for trainees who want the same. The Brook Learning Trust was established in 2010, the lead school, The Hayesbrook School (THS) has a long and successful tradition of training teachers since Our Vision Our Vision, Aspire to Inspire, underpins our core purpose: To recruit the top tier of candidates and shape them into inspirational, outstanding teachers who have the ability to motivate, inspire and challenge learners and secure outstanding outcomes for all. Our Selection Process The Brook Learning Trust prides itself on recruiting the top tier of candidates through a comprehensive selection process. We are looking for applicants that excel academically, ideally with a 2.1 degree and those who have experience (voluntary or otherwise) of working with young people ideally in an educational setting. Successful applicants will be able to demonstrate; a sound knowledge of their chosen subject, an ability to engage and inspire an audience, communicating with confidence and clarity as well as the ability to be both reflective and resilient. Most importantly they will understand the commitment involved in a successful career in teaching. All Encompassing As a provider of primary, secondary and special school places, we offer a broad, comprehensive programme alongside a tailored support network that encourages peer support and sharing of best practice amongst trainees. We work collaboratively with a range of highly successful partner schools, all of whom contribute to the facilitation of our comprehensive professional studies programme. High Employment Rates School-led courses have very high rates of employment and trainee satisfaction. We have an extensive and successful track record in ITT, many of our trainees have gone on to secure permanent positions within the Trust; many have taken on leadership roles. Experienced Leaders Our programme is led and facilitated by experienced and successful Headteachers and partner schools, all of whom contribute to the facilitation of our comprehensive professional studies programme. 03
3 There are no ceilings, glass or otherwise, at The Brook Learning Trust. Gill Ansell, Graduate trainee 2011, now Curriculum Leader for English 2015 Introducing our Training Programme Outstanding teachers, leaders and experienced practitioners, facilitate our professional studies training programme, in collaboration with our partner schools. The comprehensive training programme is designed to equip trainees with: a strong foundation in subject knowledge, extensive strategies for behaviour management and a repertoire of effective teaching strategies. From 2016 Trainees will spend 4 days a week in school and 1 day in centre based training. BLT SCITT provides a weekly professional studies training programme which is diverse and engaging, covering the range of primary curriculum subjects, effective teaching and learning, SEN, behaviour management, EAL and a suite of other topics. We have close links with all Partner Schools who support the facilitation of the programme as well as external specialists to provide a rich variety of training. So far, our training programme has a 100% good or better rating, but is frequently reviewed to keep pace with the changing educational landscape. Our Partners We are able to offer school direct placements in a variety of contexts across Kent including urban and semi-rural settings, single sex and co-educational schools, comprehensive, academies, special schools and selective establishments allowing you the opportunity to develop professionally as a fully rounded practitioner with experience in at least 2 or more contrasting settings. All 18 schools in the partnership, both Primary and Secondary, have extensive experience of delivering ITE and are committed to work together to provide high quality training. For a full list of partner schools please see the website.. Our Subject Offer 2015/6 Primary: Salaried and Unsalaried Secondary: Salaried and Unsalaried in the following subject areas Art & Design, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Design & Technology, English, Geography, History, Mathematics, Modern Languages, Music, Physical, Education, Physics Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) Courses Ideally, your degree will contain a 50% subject content for the subject in which you want to teach and it is essential you have a Grade A-C* at A Level in the same subject area that you aiming to teach. However, subject knowledge enhancement courses are available in shortage subject areas which are designed to help trainees gain the depth of subject knowledge and skills needed to teach the chosen subject. SKE courses commence prior to starting the school direct course and are fully funded by the Department for Education. Before you start your teacher training with us, trainees will complete a subject knowledge audit and this will be used to inform the subject enhancement targets to complete whilst you train with us. You will be assigned a Curriculum Mentor who will support and assess your subject knowledge throughout the duration of the course against the relevant National Curriculum. How will I be assessed during the year? Alongside the University of Brighton, we run a comprehensive on line assessment and progress tracking system throughout the programme. For QTS you will be assessed against the National Teaching Standards using: // Progress towards individual objectives set in weekly mentor meetings against the National Teacher Standards // Evidence gained throughout 2 school placements against each of the Teacher Standards // A weekly teaching self- evaluation reflection log // Weekly lesson observations of your teaching // 4 Formal reports on your progress towards QTS // Detailed records of the progress of classes taught // Final exam board For PGCE you will be assessed by: // Percentage pass mark for each of the 2 modules 05
4 I have been identified earlier than I expected as a teacher with leadership potential and given opportunities to develop these qualities in my subject area. Chris Waight, Head of House Fees Our tuition fees are 6000 for a salaried place and 8500 for an unsalaried route, both result in QTS qualification and a PGCE from the University of Brighton. Home and EU students may be eligible for a tuition fee loan to cover the cost of fees charged. This is available through Student Finance England. Trainees are required to pay back the loan once they are in full time employment and earning above 21,000. Funding for teacher training is available for eligible graduates who are starting their training in 2016/7 on postgraduate routes, amounts will vary depending on the subject you intend to teach and degree classification. To encourage the best graduates to enter the profession, financial incentives are offered to trainees intending to train to teach priority/shortage subjects. Scholarships are available in maths, physics, chemistry and computing for unsalaried trainees starting the course in the academic year 2016/7. These prestigious awards are aimed at high-quality graduates with a 2:1 or first-class degree, who are passionate about their subject and have the potential to be inspirational teachers. *Scholarships replace the standard bursary How do I apply? All applications need to be made via the UCAS website teacher-training it is a straightforward process but if you do need assistance please contact the DfE help page or contact UCAS.
