24 Unfunded proposal: The next stage of Durham Highway 2 BRT BRT lends itself to being scaled up from the light configuration being currently implemented to a full BRT with greater segregation from traffic (Viva s current expansion is an example) Metrolinx is working with Durham Region to assess how we might continue to improve the Highway 2 BRT corridor beyond the current project Carried out Durham Highway 2 BRT Benefits Case Analysis in

25 Unfunded proposal: Enhanced GO rail service Major increases in frequency and capacity of existing GO service on Lakeshore East line will require further investment in tracks and rail equipment The Big Move identifies express rail concept as Lakeshore East line s ultimate configuration Very frequent trains, almost like a subway Electrification would be a crucial step towards express rail. Electrification Study completed and adopted by Metrolinx Board of Directors in 2011 Confirmed electrification as long-term goal for parts of GO network, and suggested electrifying Lakeshore East line through Durham be one of the earlier phases 25

36 Research Findings Transportation is the number one top of mind issue for GTHA residents Reducing congestion on major highways is the number one priority, followed by improving mobility and expanding public transit There is widespread public support for solving transportation problems through a long term comprehensive plan BUT The public continues to be skeptical that governments need additional revenue to make the necessary transportation system improvements The public is resistant to paying more for less congestion and better transit service, despite wanting these improvements 36
