1 Using Windows Movie Maker Spring 2010 A. Open Movie Maker. 1. Choose Movie Maker in the Start> All Programs menu. Movie Maker will open a new blank project or open your existing project. 2. If this is a new project, give it a name and save it. a. File menu > Save Project As. b. Give the project a name and save it in the default location (your Videos folder). 3. If you are working on an existing project, you may have to find it in your. Videos folder. a. Click Start, then your user name at the top of the right column. b. Double-click Videos, and then the icon of your existing project. Movie Maker window. (see explanation below). Tech Guides Windows Movie Maker page 1

2 Tasks pane Lists processes of editing: Importing media; Adding effects, transitions and titles; and Publishing the finished product. Contents pane Shows the media available to you for editing. If you have other projects, their media may also be displayed in this pane. It helps to give your media clips appropriate names. You may forget the difference between Untitled 1 and Untitled 2. Preview monitor Shows the selected clip or Storyboard/Timeline. Playhead Shows the currently displayed frame. Drag the playhead to see different parts of the video. Timeline/Storyboard Where you edit the video. The Storyboard shows clips and transitions. The Timeline shows the same but in more detail. B. Import video. Import from a camcorder. 1. In Tasks pane click Import From digital video camera. 2. Prepare for the Import process. a. Enter a name for the clip. When naming files, remember: Shorten long file names to twenty-four characters or fewer. If you need to separate words in a name use - or _ (e.g.: file_name.htm). Use ONLY letters, numbers and hyphen (-) or underscore (_). DO NOT USE the following in file or folder names: space tab return ~ [ # $ % ^ & ( ) + = { } \ < >,? / ; : ". b. Set the location for the clip. Use the default location: Videos. Movie Maker creates a folder with the name you ve chosen where it will save the clip. c. Choose a video format. Use Windows Media Video. No other format will work. d. Click Next. e. Click Import parts. f. Click Next... Tech Guides Windows Movie Maker page 2

3 3. Import the video. a. Locate start of desired video. Use Play (>), Fast Forward (>>) and rewind (<<). b. Click and hold on << to move back a few seconds. c. Click Play. d. Click Start Video Import just before desired section starts. e. The clip will be trimmed later. f. Click Stop Video Import after the end of the desired section. g. Repeat steps h through l for additional clips. h. Click Finish to import the clip(s). 4. Save your project (File menu> Save).. Import an existing video file. For instructions on capturing video, see Capturing Video from a Webcam. 1. In Tasks pane click Import Videos. 2. Navigate to the video file you saved from the web cam. 3. Save your project (File menu > Save). C. Preparing clips. Clips appear in the Contents pane after import. The first frame may appear in the Preview monitor. 1. Trim extra frames from clip. a. Select the clip in the Contents pane. b. Click Play or drag the Playhead to find the first frame of what you want. Note: you can use Alt+arrow keys to move left and right one frame at a time. c. Click Split. d. Move to the last frame of this section that you want to keep. e. Click Split. The Contents pane now shows: the frames cut from the beginning; the clip you ve trimmed to use in your project; and the frames cut from the end. Tech Guides Windows Movie Maker page 3

4 2. Rename your clip. Select the clip in the Contents pane. Click once on its title. Type the new name. 3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for additional clips. D. Edit movie. 1. On Storyboard. a. Click clips in Contents pane and drag them to the storyboard. b. Drag, split, cut, copy, paste clips into desired order. 2. On timeline. a. Click video or audio clips in Contents pane and drag them to the timeline. b. Drag left and right end of a clip to set the start and end points OR use ALT+arrow keys to move frame by frame and CTRL+SHIFT+I to set In-point and CTRL+SHIFT+O to set Out-point. c. Drag, split, cut, copy, paste clips into desired order. E. Add narration voice-over. Use a camcorder to record your narration. Don t worry about the visual because you ll only use the sound. 1. Import the narration clip (see section B). Remember you can edit the clip or split a long clip into subclips. 2. Set the viewer to the Timeline. 3. Drag the narration clip to the Audio timeline track. The narration will appear on the Audio track. The video will be ignored. 4. Once the narration clip is on the Audio track slide it to the proper position. F. Add titles. 1. Click Make Titles and Credits in the Edit section of the Tasks pane. 2. Click the appropriate button for title placement. 3. Type the title. The title appears in the monitor. 4. Click the appropriate button to change type animation, layout, color or font. 5. Click Done to add the title to the movie. 6. Drag the title s icon to the desired location on the timeline or storyboard. Tech Guides Windows Movie Maker page 4

5 G. Add transitions and effects. 1. Click Transitions or Effects in the Edit section of the Tasks pane. 2. Drag transition or effect to desired location on timeline or storyboard. 3. To make adjustments:. Click Show Timeline. Click the + Magnifying Glass icon to zoom in. Click Video + to see the Transitions track. Drag the beginning of the transition to set duration. 9. Import audio from CD. 1. Load CD into computer. 2. Copy audio to computer. a. Open Windows Media Player. b. Click Rip in the menu bar. c. Click check-box next to desired track. d. Click Start Rip in the lower right of the window. The track will be saved in your Music Library. 3. Import audio. a. In the Movie Maker Tasks pane, click Import Audio. b. Browse to the track in the Music Library. c. (Desktop: your user folder: Music: Artist: Album). d. Click the desired track. e. Click Import. The track will appear in the Contents pane. 4. 6 10. Save movie. 1. Choose Publish to This Computer in the Tasks pane. 2. Enter a name for the movie file and confirm it will be saved in your Videos folder. 3. Click Next. 4. Click More Settings and choose Windows Media Low Bandwidth. 5. Click Next. 6. Save the movie to the appropriate location. 7. Click Finish. 8. Once the movie is finished, select it in your Videos folder, copy it to your USB drive, or upload it to your eportfolio space. Tech Guides Windows Movie Maker page 6

7 Where to find your project. Note for students in group projects in the College of Education video production lab (N153 LC): You must login with the group's service ID to find your project. 1. Click the Start button, then click your user name. 2. Double-click the Videos folder under your name. The Videos folder has your project file and the folder with your original video file(s).
