Hydrogen A zero emission fuel for transport Copenhagen, December 1, 2008 Ulf Hafseld, Head of Business Development Hydrogen, StatoilHydro

2 Agenda StatoilHydro and Hydrogen Why Hydrogen? Development through public private partnerships: HyNor Scandinavian Hydrogen Highway Partnership Infrastructure challenges

3 New energy portfolio Wind Biofuel Tidal Wave CCS Hydrogen Energy systems Kyoto CDM/JI

4 StatoilHydro delivers hydrogen solutions for Europe ECTOS/HyFLEET:CUTE Hydrogen station Reykjavik CUTE/HyFLEET:CUTE Hydrogen station Hamburg Reykjavik CEP Berlin Hydrogen production Messedam Utsira Wind-Hydrogen plant Hamburg HyNor Grenland Hydrogen station, Oslo and Drammen car stations, Risavika Berlin

5 Developing Hydrogen as a transport fuel Participating in demonstration projects on hydrogen to transport Developing solutions for hydrogen stations Developing a hydrogen fuel market Establishing business and operational models

6 Hydrogen as vehicle fuel Can realise zero emission in the transport sector Does not contribute to greenhouse gases emissions Does not require fossil sources and makes it possible to drive on renewables Facilitates new engine technology with much higher efficiency than the ICE Can give engines with reduced noise emissions

7 Well-to-wheel Greenhouse gas emissions * * Source: The Sustainable Mobility Project 2004 ICE Engines for all fuels except H2 with Fuel Cell * Advanced ICE. Estimated by VKA

8 WTW total energy efficiencies Concawe / Eucar reference data best gasoline and diesel vehicles Central Hydrogen generation/ FC hybrid vehicle MJ/100 km Gasoline hybrid Diesel hybrid H2FCH - Central ng ref. - CCS H2FCH - Bio central gasific. H2FCH - Power - wind - central ely Grey colors = Energy expended to produce fuel, Blue colors = Vehicle fuel consumption

9 Building a hydrogen infrastructure Hydrogen as a new vehicle fuel requires a new fuelling infrastructure and major effort is needed to build the new fuel market New car technologies are needed New fuel stations are needed New fuel production and supply lines are needed A co-ordinated and sustained effort is needed for the market build up from: Car industry Oil and gas companies Authorities Utilities and industrial gas companies Technology providers

10 The HyNor nodes Bergen Plans for station in phase II (2010) H 2 from refinery byproduct Romerike Plans for station in phase II (2010) H 2 from electrolysis Stavanger 2006: trucked-in 2. station (3Q09) H 2 from biogas reforming (3Q09) Oslo Car station (2Q09) Bus station (4Q09) H 2 from electrolysis Kristiansand Trucked in hydrogen (09) By-product or electrolysis Grenland 2007: Pipeline supply H 2 from byproduct Drammen Trucked-in hydrogen (2Q09) H 2 reformed from local landfill

11 HyNor Grenland A World class hydrogen station Several technology innovations Directly linked to large scale hydrogen production, scalable solution Possibility for supply and back-up for other HyNor stations 10 hydrogen cars in operation at the station Upgrading to 70 MPa technology

12 Joining forces HyNor Norway Scandinavian Hydrogen Highway Partnership Hydrogen Sweden Hydrogen Link Denmark Making the Scandinavian Region one of the first regions in Europe where hydrogen is commercially available and used in a network of refuelling stations

Building a network of hydrogen stations 13 Stavanger Porsgrunn (Grenland) Ringkøbing 4 stations are opened 10 planned for sites under evaluation Malmö

14 Vehicle fleet in HyNor/SHHP Hydrogen Prius: converted to hydrogen operation by Quantum US, 15 cars in Norway Think Hydrogen: A hydrogen/electric hybrid, 5 cars to HyNor in 2008/2009 Mazda RX8: Hydrogen/petrol, dual fuel, cars to HyNor/SHHP in 2008/2009 Buses: Plans for 8 buses in HyNor More cars: Dialogue ongoing with several car manufacturers for larger series of cars to HyNor and SHHP

15 City needed for large-scale fuel cell vehicle trial A major city needs to offer itself as a guinea pig for a large-scale experiment in fuel cell transportation, it has been claimed. According to Larry Burns, vice-president of research and development for GM, a major demonstration of intent concerning hydrogen as a fuel for vehicles is required before fuel cell and hydrogen-powered cars are to be seen as viable by the public - and made available by manufacturers. "What we need to have happen is for some city or metropolitan area to step up and say we'll put 50 to 80 stations in place," he said recently, the Windsor Star reports. "We'll locate them intelligently so our citizens are no farther than a couple of miles away from these places. Once we have a commitment like that I think the auto industry would be capable of targeting its first real, true first-generation vehicles." Mr Burns believes that current trials such as GM's project driveway are beneficial but are unreflective of the "real world" as small groups of customers are clustered around single fuelling stations. Progress is being hampered by the existence of a catch-22 situation - why build the cars if there are no stations, and why build the stations if there are no cars? However, Mr Burns has denied that infrastructure costs are a problem. Fuelcelltoday.com, February 6, 2008

16 Hydrogen infrastructure challenges The ramp-up phase is characterised by A need for a network of stations to satisfy customers Limited number of hydrogen cars Low capacity utilisation of hydrogen stations The ramp-up phase can be eased by governmental subsidies

17 Conclusions Hydrogen is a zero emission fuel that is complementary to other fuel options Hydrogen has passed the Is it possible to use as a vehicle fuel? phase Hydrogen fuel now moves into the Customer acceptance phase Cost for building up an hydrogen infrastructure is high, but not prohibitive Governmental subsidies can ease, and speed up introduction of hydrogen After the ramp-up phase, hydrogen will develop in a commercial market

StatoilHydro has hydrogen in their genes 18
