Using the Urban River Survey for physical habitat assessment: Tackling the challenges of assessing Good Ecological Potential using the Urban River Survey Dr Lucy Shuker Fluvial Geomorphologist, NE Thames Area Environment Agency River Restoration Centre 14 th Annual Network conference 1 st May 2013
Context How will Good Ecological Potential (GEP) be assessed in urban rivers? What are the challenges for urban river practitioners? How can the Urban River Survey support the delivery of GEP?
Good Ecological Status Quality Elements: Biological Water Quality Hydro-Morphological Fish Water flow: quantity and dynamics Macro invertebrates Macrophytes Phytoplankton & Diatoms General chemical & physicochemical elements Specific pollutants Ground water body: connection Continuity River depth and width variation River bed: structure and substrate Riparian zone: structure
Good Ecological Potential? Quality Elements: Biological Water Quality Hydro-Morphological Fish Water flow: quantity and dynamics X Macro invertebrates Rivers: X Macrophytes X Phytoplankton & Diatoms General chemical & physicochemical elements Specific pollutants Ground water body: connection Continuity River depth and width variation River bed: structure and substrate Riparian zone: structure
Hydro-morphology GEP assessment (UK TAG, 2008) START HMWB/AWB Designation Process USES dependent on modifications Water flow: quantity and dynamics UK TAG 2008 Annexes Measures checklists & sectors involved Pressures: present / extensive? Ground water body: connection Practicable? Impact: alone / cumulative? Continuity Adequate? NO YES GEP River depth and width variation Significant Adverse Impacts? Filter #1: On use? e.g. navigation; flood risk etc Filter #2: On wider environment? i.e. designated sites etc YES Screen out River bed: structure and substrate NO MEP Mitigation Measures RBMP Riparian zone: structure Objective Setting Filter #3: Minimal ecological gain? Filter #4: Other uncertainties? e.g. disproportionate cost, information YES Alternative objectives e.g. 2027
Are measures already in place and adequate? Urban river managers challenge is to balance the delivery of mitigation measures AND river restoration objectives Species specific habitat requirements conservation targets Hydro-morphological processes & functionality self-regulation & sustainable outcomes
River restoration Urban fisheries Trout in the Town Volunteer participation Aquatic wildlife conservation
How can the Urban River Survey support the delivery of GEP? Urban River Survey is A reach scale scientific physical assessment method & toolkit for urban rivers A modification of the River Habitat Survey, 2003 URS spot check & cumulative field data => 50+ URS indices => assess the relative physical quality within the context of channel engineering & the range achievable in an urban environment chemical or biological quality? x physical structure of riparian and aquatic vegetation? The Urban River Survey
URS website provides guidance & holds database URS Classifications - spatially structured in PCA plot URS Indices allocate stretches to Classes & SHQI URS Matrix interprets PCA discriminations The Urban River Survey
URS GEP pilot URS Indices Hydro-morphological thresholds Species specific habitat quality thresholds Good morphological diversity & potential for biological productivity Functioning reaches Limited morphological diversity / potential for biological productivity but good connectivity Connecting reaches Mitigation measures => greatest ecological gain Mitigation measures => minimal ecological gain More detailed species specific surveys needed The Urban River Survey
Characteristics of Functioning & Connecting reaches => Spatially determine where measures may be applied most effectively Functioning reaches Connecting reaches Primary focus Physical habitat requirements of biological elements Maximising potential for biological gain or quality Presence of functional habitat groupings Indicators of biological resilience Minimising limitations to potential biological gain or quality Obstructions to passage Ability of reach to distribute lowmobility biological organisms* Indicators of nuisance (NNIS) species Physical processes and hydromorphological diversity Extent of physical habitat diversity Indicators of recent morphological activity Presence of marginal habitat and backwaters Obstructions to flow Presence of coarse and fine sediments Ability of reach to store or transport coarse / fine sediments* Spatial or scaling factors Temporal factors Indicators of habitat features appropriate to position of reach in catchment continuum e.g. upstream tree lined; downstream - more macrophytes Adjustment time Separation distances between functioning reaches (min/max) Presence and distribution of pressure hot spots e.g. outfalls, litter traps, access points Future opportunities *NB - these criteria must be considered in parallel with additional risk factors e.g. NNIS and water quality Wandle Trust Catchment Action Plan, 2013
URS Indices and Data available WFD Hydro-morphology Quality Elements Water flow: quantity and dynamics Conservation targets e.g. features supporting salmonid life stages Flow quantity Flow habitat diversity URS Indices [or data available for new indices] x need hydrological surveys - flow patches Ground water body: connection - x - need hyporheic surveys Continuity River depth and width variation River bed: structure and substrate Connectivity Bed and marginal morphological diversity X-section dimensions channel planform Physical habitat diversity Bed & bank substrate - structures & reinforcement on bed / banks; marginal land use x need transect surveys - bed & marginal variability - one-off transect - physical habitat features - bed / bank materials Riparian zone: structure Riparian habitat diversity - riparian vegetation structure; tree features
