When properly installed, this system can start the vehicle via a signal from the remote transmitter control. Therefore, never operate the system in an area that does not have adequate ventilation. The following precautions are the sole responsibility of the user. D S E CANADA installers should : Never use a test light or logic probe when installing this unit. Always use a multimeter. Never operate the system in an enclosed or partially enclosed area without proper ventilation (such as a garage). When parking in an enclosed or partially enclosed area or when having the vehicle serviced, the remote start system must be disabled using the installed toggle switch. It is the user s sole responsibility to properly handle and keep out of reach from children all remote controls to assure that the system does not unintentionally remote start the vehicle. USER S MUST INSTALL A CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR IN OR ABOUT THE LIVING AREA ADJACENT TO THE VEHICLE. ALL DOORS LEADING FROM ADJACENT LIVING AREAS TO THE ENCLOSED OR PARTIALLY ENCLOSED VEHICLE STORAGE AREA MUST REMAIN CLOSED AT ALL TIMES. Use of this product in a manner contrary to its intended mode of operation may result in property damage, personal injury, or death. Except when performing the Safety Check outlined in this installation guide, (1) Never remotely start the vehicle with the vehicle in gear, and (2) Never remotely start the vehicle with the keys in the ignition. The user is responsible for having the neutral safety feature and the emergency hand brake of the vehicle periodically checked, wherein the vehicle must not remotely start while the car is in gear. This testing should be performed by an authorized D S E CANADA installers in accordance with the Safety Check outlined in this product installation guide. If the vehicle starts in gear, cease remote start operation immediately and consult with an installer to fix the problem immediately. After the remote start module has been installed, test the remote start module in accordance with the Safety Check outlined in this installation guide. If the vehicle starts when performing the emergency handbrake Safety Shutdown Circuit test, the remote start unit has not been properly installed. The remote start module must be removed or properly reinstalled so that the vehicle does not start in gear. All installations must be performed by an authorized D S E CANADA installer. OPERATION OF THE REMOTE START MODULE IF THE VEHICLE STARTS IN GEAR IS CON- TRARY TO ITS INTENDED MODE OF OPERATION. D S E CANADA WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAM- AGES CAUSES BY AN IMPROPER INSTALLATION OR PAY FOR INSTALLATION OR REINSTAL- LATION COSTS. Remote starters for manual transmission pose significant risks if not properly installed and operated. When testing to ensure the installation is working properly, only remote start the vehicle in neutral gear, on a flat surface and with a functional, fully engaged parking brake. Do not allow anyone to stand in front of or behind the vehicle. This product should not be installed in any convertible vehicles, soft or hard top with a manual transmission. Installation in such vehicles may pose certain risk. INSTALLATION POINTS TO REMEMBER This product is designed for fuel-injected, automatic transmission, or vehicles with manual transmissions. Important: The default setting is Manual Transmission Mode This is a safety precaution that forces the installer to enable the Manual Transmission Start routine or program the unit to the Automatic Transmission option before the remote start can be activated for the first time. The Automatic Transmission option should be programmed On to work with vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions. When the Manual Transmission option is selected a specific routine is required before exiting the vehicle to enable the Manual transmission mode. Sure Tach Detect Sure Tach detect is an exclusive feature for D S E Canada remote starters. It is the true RPM sensing method for the new ISTART security/remote start systems. Sure Tach detect enables the remote starter to read the vehicle s tach signal in all its variable conditions. It is far superior to any voltage-sense feature available on the market. Sure tach detect monitors the cranking pattern of the vehicle using a multiple point control system which analyses the vehicle cranking pattern to give a perfect crank on remote starting every time. D2D The system has the ability to interface with an datalink module through the D2D port. The advantage to using a D2D interface is that there is less wiring involved in the installation. Check the datalink module installation guide to determine which wires are not needed, and which options are available with these bypass modules Override / program button The Override/program button is to be installed in a location which is to be shown to the user once the system is Installed on the vehicle. The button should be well hidden. Important: When the vehicle is delivered, please show the user where this button is located and how to disarm the system with it. Optional dual zone shock sensor Note: In many vehicles, fastening the dual zone shock sensor to a steering column or screwing it to metal will result in poor sensitivity, especially at the rear of the vehicle. For best results the shock sensor should be fastened to a harness preferably well centralized. Before beginning the installation Please read this entire installation guide before beginning the installation. The installation of this remote start system requires interfacing with many of the vehicle s systems. Many new vehicles use low-voltage or multiplexed systems that can be damaged by low resistance testing devices, such as test lights and logic probes (computer safe test lights). Test all circuits with a high quality digital multi-meter before making connections. Do not disconnect the battery if the vehicle has an anti-theft-coded radio. If equipped with an air bag, avoid disconnecting the battery if possible. Many airbag systems display a diagnostic code through their warning lights after they lose power. Disconnecting the battery requires this code to be erased, which can require a trip to the dealer. If using an external LED or for the override button, check with the customer about where to locate the override and push button. To avoid accidental battery drainage; turn off the interior lights or remove the dome light fuse. Roll down a window to avoid being locked out of the car. After the installation Test all functions. The Using Your System section of the Owner s Guide is very helpful when testing. Review and complete the Safety Check section of this guide prior to the vehicle reassembly. Component locations and finding wires For detailed information on where to locate components, and how to find the wires you need, please refer to the D S E Canada web site at 4 5

Ignore this wire if starter kill is not being used. Brown accessory output Connect this wire to the accessory wire that powers the climate control system. Orange starter output Connect this wire to starter wire of the vehicle that provides a +12V on the crank position 2 x Red (+) (35A) fused main relay input Small gauge wire harness (H2), 3 pin connector description Black (-) chassis ground Ground all your components to the same point in the vehicle, (preferably the kick panel). Sand away any paint and use a factory bolt or make your own ground with a self-tapping screw and a star washer. White paring light flash wire input (pin 87 of onboard relay) This wire connects to pin 87 of the onboard parking light flash relay. It is used to select the polarity (-/+) which is required to activate the vehicle parking lights. If the vehicle has a multiplex circuit that needs the light switch isolated, you can use an optional mini relay to create the proper circuit set up (paying attention to the polarity selection). Green/White parking light output This wire should be connected to the parking light wire in the vehicle. Refer to white wire of the light flash polarity section of this guide for polarity settings. Note: For parking light circuits that draw 15-amps or more, the external white wire Polarity selection must be connected to (-) so an externel automotive relay can be used to support the voltage capacity. (H3), 20 pin black connector Blade harness connector ( provided only when blade cartrige is installed) Small gauge wire harness (H4), 24 pin connector description Yellow (-) 350ma trunk release output When the system receives the code controlling trunk release output for longer than 1.0 second, the yellow wire supplies a pulsed output. This is typically used to operate a trunk/hatch release or other relay-driven function. Warning! Never use this wire to drive anything but a relay or a low-current input! The transistorized output can only supply 350mA of current. Connecting directly to a solenoid, motor, or other highcurrent device will cause it to short circuit. 6 7

5 Pink (-) siren/horn 1 amp output Connect this to the black wire of the siren and then connect the red wire of the siren to (+) battery, preferably at the same location you connected the control module s red 12V+ wire. Or if connecting to the horn simply connect direct to the horn trigger wire. Orange/White (+) door trigger input This wire is used in vehicles that have a positive (+) switched dome light circuit. Connect the orange wire to a wire that shows (+)12V when any door is opened and ground when the door is closed. Purple/Black trunk trigger input This input responds to a negative input with an instant trigger. Note: this trigger can also be programme to convert into an external start trigger input (Refer to: Table #2 option #4 of the programming guide) Brown/White (-) door trigger input Most vehicles use negative door trigger circuits. Connect the brown/white wire to a wire which shows ground when any door is opened. In vehicles with factory delays on the dome light circuit, this wire is usually unaffected by the delay circuitry. White (-) 350ma dome light output/parking light/horn (programable opt 2.13) Connect this wire to the optional dome light supervision relay Important! This output is only intended to drive a relay. It cannot be connected directly to the dome light circuit, as the output cannot support the current draw of one or more light bulbs. This wire is low current output (350mA) and can be hooked to the horn honk wire in the vehicle. It will sound only during full trigger or to a second parking light circuit Blue/White (-) 350ma ground when armed output This wire supplies a (-)350 ma ground as long as the system is armed. This output ceases as soon as the system is disarmed. The GWA can be hooked up to a window module, a voice module or any accessory that requires a ground when armed. Yellow/White (-) 350ma factory alarm disarm output This wire sends a negative pulse every time the remote start is activated, trunk release is activated or when the doors are unlocked with the remote. This can be used to pulse the disarm wire of the vehicle s factory antitheft device. In some cases a relay may be required. Grey (-) 350ma factory alarm arm output This wire sends a negative pulse every time the remote start shuts down or when the doors are locked with the remote. This can be used to pulse the arm wire of the vehicle s factory anti-theft device. In some cases a relay may be required. Blue/Red (-) diesel wait to start input Connect this wire to the wire in the vehicle that sends the signal to turn on the WAIT-TO-START bulb in the dashboard. In most diesels the wire is negative (ground turns on the bulb) and the blue/red wire can be directly connected to the wire in the vehicle. If the vehicle uses a positive wire (12V to turn on the bulb) :use the blue/black wire (+)WAIT-TO-START WIRE The system has a programmable onboard timer (Refer to table #2, option#7 & 8) so it is not mandatory to connect to the wait-to-start wire in the vehicle. Note: it is recommended to use a 1-amp diode installed in line on the factory wire between the waitto-start indicator and the ECM. White/Blue (-) emergency hand brake safety stitch input Connect this wire to a ground source if installing this unit in an manual transmission vehicle. Connect it to the emergency brake wire. Disable: No above function Manual cranking setting Important: the Istart has a built in suretach feature that provides a successful start almost every time. It can happen that older vehicles may require a little over crank to get the vehicle running in cold starting temperature so +2seconds can be added to the minimal cranking time to secure a successful start. Note: it may be necessary to advise the user of the possible over cranking noise heard from time to time White green wire pin 16 Temperature sensor input: connect to the engine temperature sensor provided in the istart box. Aux input: can be Programmed to be a trigger input for additional sensor such microwave, tilt sensor or extra shock sensors Temperature sensor disable Disable default, -20 degree C: set to this option if the user would like the vehicle start when the outside engine temperature reaches 20 degrees C. In certain vehicle applications during the remote starting sequence the oem alarm system is disarmed, this will in some cases make the domelight turn itself On or when the remote start times out and the ignition is turned Off. This can often cause the Istart door input to Trigger the istart aftermarket alarm. By enabling this feature it will allow 30 seconds to override the domelight input in order for the istart alarm not be triggered Dome diagnostic 4 chirp Door trigger error chirp enable. This feature controls the error chirp that is generated if the system is locked with the door trigger active. This is useful in vehicles with a long dome light delay after the door is closed. If the system is locked before the dome light turns Off, the system generates the door trigger error chirp. If this error chirp notification is not desired, use this feature to disable the door open error chirp notification. If the error chirp notification is turned Off, no bypass chirp is generated, even if a door is accidentally left open Cranking time adjustments Minimum cranking time 0.7/0.9 second 4.06 Cranking time adjustements Maximum cranking time 10/3.5 seconds 4.07 N/A 4.08 N/A 4.09 Parking lights shut after 3 minutes Enabling this option will turn off the parking lights 3 minutes after the vehicle has been remote started while maintainig the Vehicle On for its full time out duration 4.10 Mute button selection Mute: default, on the remote transmitter as the button to press for locking/arming & unlocking/disarming without audible chirp Trunk: select this option to convert the mute default mute button to become an individual trunk open button. Stop: select this option to convert the default mute button to become an individual stop button to the remote starter MISCELLANEOUS Long term event history The system stores the last six full alarm triggers in memory. These are not erasable. Each time the unit sees a alarm trigger, the older of the six triggers in memory is replaced by the new trigger. To access long term event history: Refer to: Table #1 option #13 Table of zones When using the Diagnostic functions, use the Table of Zones to see which input has triggered the system. It is also helpful in deciding which input to use when connecting optional sensors and switches. Trigger type Input description Refer to Annex 1 item I Shutdown diagnostics Refer to Annex 1 item I Remote start safety check Before vehicle reassembly, the remote system must be checked to ensure safe and trouble-free operation. The following test procedure must be used to verify proper installation and operation of the system. The installation must be completed before testing, including connection to the brake switch and hood switch. 1. Test the BRAKE shutdown circuit: With the vehicle in Park (P), activate the remote start system. Once the engine is running, press the brake pedal. The engine should shut down immediately. If the engine continues to run, check the brake circuit connection. 2. Test the HOOD PIN shutdown circuit: With the vehicle in Park (P), open the hood. Activate the remote start system. The vehicle should not start. If the starter engages, check your hood pin and connections. 3. Test the emergency hand brake shutdown circuit (if a manual transmission installation) Important! Make sure there is adequate clearance to the front and rear of the vehicle before attempting this test. 3.1 Make sure the hood is closed and no other shutdown circuits are active.. Make sure the vehicle is in the neutral position 3.2 Do not set the emergency hand brake. 3.3 Start the engine with the key 3.4 Press on the remote transmitter start button, if your connection is correct the remote starter should not engage itself

12 TROUBLESHOOTING ALARM Shock sensor doesn t trigger the alarm Verify if the alarm mode is properly programmed because this feature is disabled by default. (refer to table #1 option #7) Possible defective dual zone shock sensor Door input does not immediately trigger full alarm Instead, chirps are heard for the first 3 seconds: That s how the progressive two-step door trigger input works! This is a feature of this system. It will chirp quickly for 10 chirp to full blown panic mode. Closing the door triggers the system, but opening the door does not Have you correctly identified the type of door switch system? This happens often when the wrong door polarity input has been used. System does not passively arm until it is remotely armed and then disarmed: Are the door inputs connected? Verify if the door input (-/+) are receiving a clear signal. Make sure the Istart unit is in alarm mode(refer to table #1 option #7) The Valet/Program switch doesn t work Is it plugged in properly? With the use of a multi-meter unplug the push button connector. From the Istart and test the continuity at the connector by pressing the push button if there No signal from the multi-meter the switch may be defective. Door locks operate backwards These wire can mistakenly be reversed. Recheck wire connections to see if you have reversed these. REMOTE START 4. Make sure the Orange starter wire is connected on the starter side of the optional starter kill/anti-grind relay. 5. Does the vehicle have an immobilizer? Some immobilizer systems do not allow the vehicle to crank if active. 6. Check connections. The heavy gauge remote start input wires on the heavy gauge 8 pin connector should have a solid connection. T-taps or scotch locks are not recommended for any high current heavy gauge wiring. The vehicle starts, but immediately dies 1. Does the vehicle have an immobilizer? The vehicle s immobilizer cuts the fuel and/or spark during unauthorized starting attempts. 2. Check diagnostics. Sometimes a shutdown becomes active during cranking or just after cranking. 3. Was the Tach Learn successful? The LED must light solid and bright to indicate a successful learn. 4. Make sure that there is a tach signal at the black/white tach input wire of the remote start. If there is not a tach signal, recheck the connection to the vehicle s tach wire and make sure the wire is not broken or shorted to ground leading to the remote start. The vehicle starts, but only runs for 5 seconds In very few vehicles the tach signal may have a very high voltage flux, in those case may Be necessary to try changing the tach jumper setting. If this does not work, another tach wire should be used. Check shutdown diagnostics. The climate control system does not work while the unit is operating the vehicle. Either the wrong accessory wire is being energized or more than one ignition or accessory wire must be energized in order to operate the climate control system. Remote start manual transmission ready mode failure The remote emits a failure notification when trying to enable the manual transmission mode or the vehicle fails to stay remote started when the key is turned off. Possible causes are: 1. Hood Open. 2. Foot Brake active 3. No hand Brake input, white/blue emergency hand brake wire not showing ground with parking brake set. 4. Tachometer is not hooked up or programmed correctly 5. Toggle switch is switched to the Off position not plugged in correctly or defective The remote start does not activate 1. Check remote start up diagnostics to determine what may be the cause of the no start situation. 2. Check the harnesses and their connections. Make sure that the harnesses are completely plugged into the remote start module. Make sure there are good connections to the vehicle wiring. 3. Check voltage and fuses on the main 8 pin harness and on the Heavy gauge remote start harness. The remote start does activate, but the starter never engages. 1. Check for voltage on the Orange starter wire five seconds after the remote start becomes active. If there is voltage present, skip to Step 4. If there is not voltage present, advance to Step Check the 35A fused Red wire and make it tests 12V+ 3. If the blue/black wait-to-start wire is detecting ground upon activation, the starter will not crank
