2 Creating a Culture of College and Career Readiness Helping Students Build Readiness Effective college and career planning should begin in the 9th grade, and could start even earlier. While it is important to focus on parent engagement, meeting standards, and building resiliency in earlier grades, high school requires that students take a number of steps toward post-graduation success: Prepare for College Entrance Exams Success on the PSAT, SAT, and ACT is a major factor in college admissions, and critical thinking strategies gained through exam preparation can help students throughout their lives Take Rigorous College-Level Courses AP courses challenge students and enhance learning, while AP exams and dual enrollment at community colleges help students earn college credit before arriving on campus. Plan for Applications and Financial Aid With tuition costs outpacing inflation, students and families should have a strong understanding of which schools provide the most opportunity, and availability of scholarships and loans Connect to Community and Careers Students should engage with their community early to identify potentital career interests and learn about how they can best contribute to our society and economy Texas House Bill 5 With the introduction of Texas House Bill 5, college and career readiness is now front and center for students in Texas. Preparation for standardized tests and participation in rigorous, college-level courses should be a crucial part of every student s personal graduation plan.
