1 WHAT IS A SOLAR WATER HEATER? INSTALLATION CONDITIONS FOR A SOLAR WATER HEATER: To get the full benefits of a solar heater you must have an area for the solar collectors that is large enough and has the proper exposure to the sun. A flat roof is ideal because the collectors can usually be oriented to face the sun directly very easily. If you install the collectors on a pitched roof, the ideal direction the roof should face is south. On a typical single-family residence, there will typically be from one to three solar collector panels on the roof. The panels resemble skylights, and will be about 1 meter wide and 2 meters long. The cold water supply is connected to the solar storage tank. Water to be heated circulates between the storage tank and the solar collectors. The output from the solar storage tank becomes the cold water connection to the conventional gas, electric or oil water heater. When a hot tap is opened, pre-heated water is drawn from storage into the conventional («auxiliary») water heater. The burner or electric element turns on only if the temperature cannot be maintained by the solar heater. Most properly-designed solar water heaters will supply 70 per cent or more of all the energy needed for water heating. The collector area required will depend on the daily amount of hot water use, the type of collectors used, the orientation of the collectors and your geographic location. If you consider a standard «package», you should be sure it is sized appropriately for your specific installation. If you choose a «Passive» solar water heater, the storage tank(s) will be on the roof. In this event, simple structural bracing may be required. Active solar systems do not normally require structural calculations or roof bracing, because the weight of the collectors is well within normal roof load limits. An «Active» solar water heater uses a small pump for solar collector circulation, and does not require a tank on the roof. A «Passive» solar heater depends on thermosyphon action, so does not use a pump, but tanks(s) must be on the roof. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE: Your solar water heater should be supplied with operation and maintenance instructions. You will find that there is little, if anything, for you to do once the installer has started your system and checked its operation for the first time. Properly designed solar water heaters are completely automatic and are left in operation year-round. Be sure the instructions specify how your system is protected from freezing!

Result: Heats much faster than the normal resistance. ANODE EXPANSION TANK An expansion tank or expansion vessel is a small tank used in closed water heating systems and domestic hot water systems to absorb excess water pressure, which can be caused by thermal expansion as water is heated, or by water hammer. The vessel itself is a small container divided in two by a rubber diaphragm. One side is connected to the pipe work of the heating system and therefore contains water. The other, the dry side, contains air under pressure, and normally a Schrader valve (car-tire type valve stem) for checking pressures and adding air. When the heating system is empty or at the low end of the normal range of working pressure the diaphragm will be pushed against the water inlet. As the water pressure increases, so the diaphragm moves compressing the air on its other side. The compressibility of the air cushions the pressure shock, and relieves pressure in the system that could otherwise damage the plumbing system. AIR VENT Air vent valve for use in heating systems. How Anodes Work Anode rods are made of other metals other than steel, usually magnesium or aluminum, that react electro negatively in relation to the steel lining of the tank. With the addition of a magnesium or aluminum water heater anode, the electric current travels from the water to the anode and to the other metal fixtures. The anode protects the other metals in the tank, including the exposed copper fixtures, because magnesium and aluminum are scientifically less noble metals. So the current produces an electro chemical reaction that corrodes the anode rod before the more noble steel lining of the storage tank and the copper of the fixtures. This is why these anodes are commonly referred to as sacrificial rods. These sacrificial rods are designed to absorb the corrosive electric current and deteriorate. But once the metal on a water heater anode is gone, the steel of the tank and the metallic fixtures will start to absorb the current and corrode. PRESSURE VALVE The pressure is relieved by allowing the pressurised fluid to flow from an auxiliary passage out of the system. The relief valve is designed or set to open at a predetermined set pressure to protect pressure vessels and other equipment from being subjected to pressures that exceed their design limits. When the set pressure is exceeded, the relief valve becomes the path of least resistance as the valve is forced open and a portion of the fluid is diverted through the auxiliary route.
