2 Teacher Directions: Student created Solar System Flip Book! In order to make the accordion book, you will need about 3 pieces of large black (or any other color) construction paper per student. When I did this activity with my third graders, I had the accordion part of the book already completed for them. They did the rest by themselves. Younger grades can do this part as a whole class lesson. You may also want to have a parent helper available. First, take 3 large sheets (12 x 18 ) of construction paper and cut them in half, long way or landscape. Then, overlap the cut pieces by about an inch and glue the pieces together. Begin to fold the construction paper back and forth every 8 inches. (8 inches will fit the clip art pictures of the planets.) Word of caution: do not worry about making this perfect!! This activity is a great alternative assessment! My special needs student write the facts about the planets, using their Science books and picture books as a resource. This could also be a homework research project. Complete the accordion part of the book at school, and then have the students write the facts and color the pictures the appropriate color at home! Instead of making the accordion flip book, you can simply make a book! One of the fourth grade teachers at my school had her students glue the planets and facts on a square sheet of black construction paper (8 ½ by 11 or smaller). Students placed them in order (from the Sun.) The teacher then hole punched in the upper left hand corner and then placed the pages inside a metal ring clip. You could also use a piece of ribbon for added cuteness! She then hung them by the ring clip in the hallway as a bulletin board. There are several pages in this file that can be used for a cute and creative solar system bulletin board- pages 1,6,7,8, and then all of the color planet pages. The last part of this file is a student created solar system flip book. Students can use it for homework, a review for an upcoming assessment, as an informal assessment, as a cooperative group project, ect.
3 Just like the directions indicate, this is student created! One of the reasons why my students liked this project so much is because they had the opportunity to get out their materials, find floor space, and work together with their friends.
