1 Introduction to the TI-Nspire CX Activity Overview: In this activity, you will become familiar with the layout of the TI-Nspire CX. Step 1: Locate the Touchpad. The Touchpad is used to navigate the cursor around the screen. What appears in the center of the Touchpad? Step 2: Locate the keys to the left of the Touchpad. How do some of these keys compare in name and location to keys on a computer keyboard? Step 3: Note the light blue color of the commands that appear above many of the keys. Which key do you push to access the light blue options on the key pad? Step 4: Many of the traditional shortcut keys used with computer software are available on a TI-Nspire handheld. For example, / C and / V are used to copy and paste, respectively. Step 5: Note the colors of various keys and the location of the alpha keys. What do you notice about the arrangement of the keys? Step 6: Where are the buttons for adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing located? Step 7: Press c to turn on the handheld. If the home screen is not displayed, press c again. Look at the available options. Use the e key to move to each of the Home Screen options. 2 Introduction to the TI-Nspire CX Step 8: Note the Scratchpad options available on the left hand side of the screen and the icon in front of the Scratchpad. Locate the Scratchpad key on the handheld. Step 9: Select Settings and choose 4: Status. You will find the available memory and battery status noted on the following screen. Press d or press a to choose OK to exit the Status menu. Step 10: Select Settings again. Note the other options and explore the various General Settings and the Graphs & Geometry settings. Press d or press a to choose OK to exit the Settings menu. Step 11: From the Home Screen, select New Document to start a new document. If prompted to save the current document, select No. Select 1:Add Calculator. A blank Calculator page appears on the screen and a tab labeled 1.1 is displayed in the top left corner of the screen. Step 12: Using the Touchpad, move the cursor to the icon to the left of the red x in the upper right hand corner of the screen. 3 The Calculator Application Activity Overview: This activity explores various menus and templates available in the Calculator application. Step 1: Open a New Document and add a Calculator application. If you are on the Home screen, select Current to return to the document with the Calculator application. Step 2: Step 3: Press t to access the templates. Select the first option on the first row for the fraction template. Practice adding and subtracting fractions. You can also press / p to access the fraction template. Use the Touchpad arrow keys or press e to move from numerator to denominator. To find the decimal value (usually displayed at a maximum of 6 digits), press /. Enter another fraction problem and add a decimal after any numerator or denominator. Step 4: To convert the last answer from a decimal back into a fraction, select Menu > Number > Approximate to Fraction, and press. The value within the parentheses is the tolerance for this command. Step 5: Find the factors of 240 by selecting Menu > Number > Factor. The Least Common Multiple and Greatest Common Factor commands are also located in the Number menu Texas Instruments Incorporated 1 education.ti.com
4 The Calculator Application Step 6: Step 7: To raise a number to a power, first enter the base. Press l, and enter the exponent. Press. The cursor is still in the exponent box after entering the exponent. If a further calculation is needed, press to exit the exponent box. Pressing t and selecting the second option in the first row will also access the exponent template. To determine a root, press / q for the square root or / l for the nth root. Use the root template, and then explore some of the other templates. Step 8: To check the truth value of a statement, enter the statement, and then press. To access the inequality symbols, press / =. Step 9: To evaluate a trigonometric ratio in degrees without changing to degree mode: Press μ to access the trigonometric ratios, and then select the required ratio. After entering the angle to be evaluated, press / k to access the symbol palette. Select the degree symbol and press. Step 10: To copy and paste a previous line that you would like to edit, press until the line is highlighted and press to paste the desired line into the current line. 5 \ The Calculator Application Step 11: To check an equation or to evaluate an expression, use the such that key by pressing / =. To access the braces, press / ). Step 12: To store a value to a variable, enter the value and press / h and then the name of the variable and press. Step 13: You can use the stored value by typing the name of the variable when you are performing a calculation. Step 14: The xx/99 in the lower right of the screen is the number of lines in the history of the calculator application that have been executed.
