1 Chemistry 1411 Student Information Plan INSTRUCTOR: Esther Kempen Ph.D. OFFICE: S253 PHONE: OFFICE HOURS: COMMUNICATING WITH YOUR INSTRUCTOR: The preferred method for communicating with your instructor is through the ACC . Please leave your first and last name, a phone number or address where I can contact you and tell me what you need to discuss with me. I will normally respond within 24 hours Monday-Thursday and by the next business day on Friday-Sunday. COURSE DESCRIPTION: The topics presented in this course include atomic structure, the periodic classification, the gas laws, reactions involving oxygen and hydrogen, solutions of electrolytes, ionization, and acids, bases, and salts. CREDIT: 4 credit hours (3 Lecture +3 Lab.) PREREQUISITES: Reading 0310, Math 1314 and High School Chemistry or Chem 1405 within the last 5 years.. METHODOLOGY: In-class lecture, lab-based instruction, in-class discussion, online communication, examination, and submission of assignments. CLASS ATTENDANCE POLICY: Attendance is mandatory in lecture and lab. Should a student miss a lecture or lab, the student is responsible for asking classmates what she or he missed. Excused absences (for test/exams/labs) will be allowed for the following reasons: 1. School trips and/or functions - arrangements with your instructor must be made prior to the absence. 2. Death in the immediate family - a notice must be sent to your instructor. 3. Too ill to attend class - a note from your physician must be brought to your instructor. 4. Extra credit work will not be granted for any reason. The use of a cell phone during a test will result in a zero on that test. If you are late for the test, you will only have the time remaining, for the scheduled test, to complete the test. No make-up labs are given for unexcused absences or the first excused absence. The lowest lab grade will be dropped. W.Withdrawal. It is recommended that the student talk to the instructor before withdrawing. Current information can be found online in the Withdrawal section of ACC Schedule. Students who file withdrawal requests by the published deadline will receive a grade of W. If you wish to drop the class, YOU must officially withdraw at the Registrar Office in the A-building. Otherwise a grade of F will appear on your transcript at the end of the semester. No W s are given after the official withdrawal date of the semester.

2 TEXTBOOK and LAB BOOK required and MUST be brought to class every meeting! Lecture: CHEMISTRY ATOMS FIRST with Connect Plus Access card by Julia Burge and Jason Overby. 1st Edition McGraw Hill. ISBN The Connect homework is Required the homework average will comprise 15 % of the final grade. Should students already have a copy of the previous chemistry textbook, they may use the previous textbook but must obtain the online homework. The Connect homework is available without the book from the bookstore, ISBN Lab: Laboratory Manual will be furnished free of charge to the student during the first week of class. A carbonless lab notebook is also required and is available in the ACC bookstore. Students should have read the information on the day s lab BEFORE coming to lab. The lab manual is produced by the Chemistry Department of Alvin Community College. The lecture textbook can be purchased at the ACC bookstore, which is open Monday through Thursday 7:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Friday 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Bookstore hours can vary during holidays so please call the bookstore at for more information. The textbook can also be purchased online and mailed directly to your residence from : ADDITIONAL MATERIALS: Students must bring to class every day the following items 1. Materials to take notes 2. A scientific calculator capable of scientific notation (must have an EE or ^ button) and log 3. A periodic table (available on my blackboard for this course under tools) 4. Lab and lecture textbooks, and carbon copy lab notebook. COURSE GOALS & OBJECTIVES: The general course objectives of Chemistry 1411 are for students to develop the following: Development of scientific vocabulary and literacy To broaden the students general cultural background.. To develop scientific understanding in the country s electorate.. To develop an appreciation for basic research.. To prepare the student for advanced study in chemistry. To prepare the student to enter industrial work. To prepare the student for professional work in certain scientific fields of medicine, dentistry, physics, engineering, biology, and technology.

3 Lecture: There will be three Major Hour Test Grades and several quizzes grades. The average of the quiz grades will count as a major test grade. The number of tests, labs and homework assignments may be subject to change at the instructor s discretion. Students will be informed of any changes on Blackboard and/or via the student s address registered in Webaccess. Lab: A formal lab report will be assigned that will be worth 9% of the semester grade and qualifies as the mandated core assessment for empirical and quantitative skills and writing. There are no make-up labs. However, the lowest lab grade will be dropped. Class Grade is calculated as follows: Homework = 15% of Semester Grade, Test Average= 40%, Lab = 25% of Semester Grade (9% for formal lab, 1% teamwork lab and 15% the average of all other labs) and Final 20% of Semester Grade in this course. Core Assessment: Formal Lab: A formal lab is required. The conclusion of this lab will act as the writing core assessment. The analysis section of the formal lab will act as both the empirical and quantitative assessment. This lab is worth 9 % of the overall class grade. Teamwork Lab: One lab will be performed in teams and will assess teamwork. The teamwork assessment will act as 1% of the overall class grade. Your grade is based on the TOTAL or AVERAGE of the points you received on all course assignments and activities. Always notify your instructor if you are concerned with your grades or your status in the class. Test and quiz descriptions and dates will be announced in class GRADING SCALE Points Grade -or- Percent Grade A % A B 80-89% B C 70-79% C D 60-69% D 59 or less F < 60% F I...Incomplete. No Incompletes or I grades will be given except for extreme circumstances. If an I grade is assigned and the course work is not completed by the pre-arranged time limit, this grade will convert to an F. W.Withdrawal. Students who file withdrawal requests by the published deadline will receive a grade of W. LATE COURSE WORK POLICY Students are expected to have their assignments done by the due dates. Late work will either be not accepted or heavily penalized. Class Policies and Procedures a) Cell phones which have been registered with the college HyperALert Emergency Notification System may remain in vibrate or silent mode after entering the classroom. Students may not send text messages or accept phone calls for any other purpose during class time. b) Classroom Conduct: It is the right of each student to participate in his or her learning, and it is the responsibility of each student to not interfere with the learning of other students. Policies governing the classroom will be provided in each course syllabus and students who violate one or more of these policies will be subject to

4 disciplinary action. See Student Handbook p. 17 and p c) STUDENT COMPUTER LABS Computer labs are available for use by ACC students. Labs are available on a first-come first-serve basis and are open for use to anyone with a valid ACC student ID. ACC also has wireless Internet connectivity to current students throughout the campus. The automated catalog, the Internet, and subscription databases are accessible from anywhere the Internet is available. Off-campus access of the databases requires login access, which is obtained from the library. CLASSROOM PROTOCOL It is the right of each student to participate in his or her learning, and it is the responsibility of each student to not interfere with the learning of other students. It is the expectation of the college that each student assumes the responsibility to follow college policies and procedures governing campus and classroom conduct. This information is published in the ACC Student Handbook DISCLAIMER: The instructor reserves the right to modify this syllabus as needed and will notify the students of any changes using the ACC or MyBlackboard or announcements EXPECTATIONS: 1. Students are expected to obtain a textbook and send the instructor an stating that they have read this syllabus and schedule and understand what is expected of them by the second week of class. Include your first and last name and student ID number in the . I will not attempt to guess who is. 2. Students are expected to allocate a minimum of 10 hours per week on textbook readings, interacting with course materials, participating in class discussions, and completing assignments, quizzes, tests and exams. 3. Students are expected to use the ACC campus computers or have a workable computer that can access the course website. Any technical problems on the student s side WILL NOT be an acceptable excuse for late work. 4. Students are expected to have performed the initial write-up of their labs before coming to lab. Students who have not written their prelab will not be allowed to perform lab until their prelab is complete, and no extra time will be given to the student to perform the lab other than the time allotted for class. The lowest lab grade of the semester will be dropped. 5. Labs are to be performed individually not in partners unless specifically instructed to do so by the instructor. Students who share data without permission or present data or work other than that which they themselves

5 obtained during the lab will reported under ACC s code of academic dishonesty. 6. Students must submit the homework on before the due date. Each homework assignment has a fake question at the end that has no answer. The online homework will continue to allow student to practice problems until the student has received a 100 on the assignment. After the student has made a 100, the software will no longer generate problems. The purpose of the fake question is to allow students to make a 100 by submission on the due date but to allow those students to still use the online homework as a study-aid after they have received there perfect score. The grade recorded in the gradebook will be the highest score submitted on or before the due date. No scores will be accepted after the due date. TECHNICAL SUPPORT: 1. Computers are available for use by all registered ACC students in any of the 23 ACC/PCC computer labs, including the Cyber Lab, room A-173. Cyber Lab hours are: Mon-Thurs. 8:00am-8:00pm, Friday 8:00am- 5:00pm and Sunday 4:00pm-8:00pm. Call for more information about all ACC computer labs. 2. The ACC Library website: 3.
